A Georgia reader holds his nose and votes; Update: Chambliss wins

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 2, 2008 04:44 PM

It’s runoff day in Georgia. The lines at the polls have been short, which is probably good news for GOP incumbent Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

The bad news is that a lot of conservatives aren’t happy about the pro-bailout, pro-amnesty Republican, but feel they have to hold their nose and vote for him.

Ugh. I thought those days were over.

Reader Ryan e-mails about his voting experience this morning:

I just wanted to let you know that I just got back from voting here in Ga. Both the Atlanta Journal and the local poll workers are saying its been a light turnout today in the runoff election between RINO King Saxby Chambliss and Squirrel Head Jim Martin.

As much as I hated to vote for the RINO King, I had to cast ballot for him, if for nothing else to keep our Noble Chairman MaoBama from getting his Super-Majority…

Ryan, in Ga.

***
Update: Chambliss wins the runoff. Now, conservatives must hold his feet to the fire.

One more thing: Guess the ‘Cuda Effect trumped the Luda Effect.

One other thing: Stacy McCain defends Saxby’s immigration record. Points taken, but the takeaway from his shamnesty dalliance is that the guy went wobbly went it mattered most — and it took massive resistance and vigilance to set him straight.

Sorry, that was a little harsh. Point taken that many conservatives stayed home…but many people also voted for Obama over McCain b/c there was little to distinguish between the two. Palin pumped up McCain’s campaign tremendously, but it was on life support before that time.

McCain was simply unable to distinguish himself from Obama b/c he refused to espouse (even recognize?) conservatism (remember when he “suspended his campaign” re the economic “crisis,” then sat like a bump on a log instead of shouting NO BAILOUT! like a real conservative would have.) McCain is responsible for his own problems, not the people such as Michelle and other conservatives in the media and elsewhere who tried desperately to get him to understand what he NEEDED TO DO. He refused, and he lost.

    Remember my question?

How do you engender support from Conservatives by attacking them?

The answer is: You don’t. But that’s exactly what Bill did.
And then after viscerally attacking Conservatives and driving them away he expected them to vote for his candidate?

McCain was a weak candidate on many levels, but he was what came out of the primaries. At some point you need to not let the perfect be the enemy of the not intolerable.

Name the biggest “RINO” out there. What immediately springs to my mind is Lincoln Chaffey formerly of RI. He was a lousy senator and a full on democrat. The very definition of a RINO. He did however caucus with the republicans and could be leaned on to occasionally do the right thing. When he was in the senate the Republicans chaired the comities and could set the agenda. When he was voted out and replaced with an Authentic democrat the republicans lost the chairmanship of the comities, the control of the Senate and the ability to set the agenda.

He was a lousy senator and a lousy republican, but he was the best Republican that could have gotten elected in… and lets face it: a lousy state. Purifying the party by tossing him out just lost us the seat. Norm Coleman is a RINO, but the best that you are going to get in Minnesota at the moment. He is a hell of a lot better than Al Frankin, who wasn’t even a good comedian. Chambliss isn’t a sterling conservative… but without him the democrats can get their union card check law passed.

We are seriously screwed as it is. I empathize with your frustration, I REALLY do. But driving people away isn’t going to get us to where we want to go.

Perhaps, I don’t know. But the analogy doesn’t transfer to McCain’s situation. Americans are hungry for a strong, conservative leader, witness Palin’s impact…

But driving people away isn’t going to get us to where we want to go.

Then I must ask, what IS going to get us there? Assuming we’re both talking about a return to conservatism.

Yes. This is made incredibly difficult on a societal level with the educational system and the media being what it is. If you want a true conservative revolution in the USA it is going to have to be a holistic approach. Otherwise it is just going to be what it is now: trying to stop the other side from doing damage.

I know you’re a McCain supporter. I am a conservative supporter, who voted for the R ticket (Palin), which happened to include McCain. I say kick out the RINOs and start over. Anything else is just prolonging the agony of a slow death, kind of like this bailout nonsense.

No one is advocating just taking whatever is handed to you.

I didn’t vote for him in the primaries, however when he was chosen by a majority of republican voters I backed him as best as I could because I didn’t want the results that we got. I am pretty aggravated that the campaign had to fight off attacks from “friend” and foe alike and think that those who couldn’t see the necessity of keeping out the obamamessiah shouldn’t really have a role in rebuilding.

“I say kick out the RINOs and start over. “

I say we don’t have the luxury of “kicking out” anyone. I also say some of the self-appointed arbiters of who has the right of of running as or voting for a Republican need to get off their high-horse and realize that there are people of good faith who are going to disagree with them on the occasional issue. All or nothing is going to leave them with nothing.

Based on what you said about Chafee, et al., let me see if I have this straight.

You seem to think that anyone who puts an “R” after their name, no matter how they behave, believe, or vote, should be worthy of the support of conservatives. However, when said conservatives try to hold these RINOs accountable (e.g., by calling them out on faulty positions or better yet, voting them out of office), your contempt is directed at the conservatives.

No. What I have stated is that letting the perfect be the enemy of the good is going to leave us with nothing.

The Republican Party has suffered a huge loss of credibility over the Bush administration because they blew it. Simply pit they blew it. They spent way too much, they weren’t able to communicate an agenda with the country indeed they didn’t really have one. (The last time they did was the “contract with America”.) At this point we (republicans) have suffered a rout and the way that we are going to get back is to elect competent administrators who are not going to screw up. Not by insisting on fat headed ideologues who tow the narrow line of some peoples misguided notions of conservatism… (Ie: it’s OK to spend like a maniac as long as we get the religious lip service)

Most importantly; Since on a federal level we are down to just over 40 senators we can’t afford to be playing “king of the tree house” and calling allies RINO’s. It is tough enough to win an election against an organized democrat opposition, getting BS heaped on you from myopic “allies” is tough to take.

“However, when said conservatives try to hold these RINOs accountable (e.g., by calling them out on faulty positions or better yet, voting them out of office), your contempt is directed at the conservatives.”

It isn’t conservative to toss the baby out with the bathwater. What is conservative is to keep the pressure on our elected officials. People here seem to believe that if they hold out for the perfect person all they have to do is sit back while he or she does their bidding. If that is what tyou are waiting for then run yourself. I may vote for you and take up your cause whole this online think tank trashes you.

One more important detail: The term “RINO” has become a Democratic tool to split the right off the moderate wing of the Republican party. It only serves the democrats when republicans point at teach other and seek ways of throwing each other out of the party. When you hear someone using it you should question their motivation.

I agree that the Repubs screwed it up. And I think Pres. Bush isn’t helping at ALL with his “pre-socializing” of the economy for the next administration. That is just WAY over the top…the least he could do is put a halt to ALL bailout nonsense and let the next administration deal with it…who knows, the situation may have self-corrected by then, e.g., bankruptcy, mergers, trimming dead wood, etc. And I am so disappointed that a former Texas Governor is so apathetic about dealing with the illegal immigration problem in this country.

It seems that we see the problem similarly, but as to the solution we are at different points on the spectrum. I say tough love is in order, and I think you are saying we should salvage what we have. I’m at the point where I don’t see much left to salvage. I am eager for a strong, conservative leader who will galvanize the party, and I recognize that no one will agree 100% with anyone else. The problem is that there has been NO strong conservative leader for quite some time in the R party. That’s why so many people are excited about Gov. Palin, Gov. Jindal, and others who “walk the walk” and are widely loved by their constituents and others throughout the country who witness their efforts.

I don’t agree with electing anybody who sees fit to put an “R” after their name into office, then trying to mold them into a conservative. There are too many pols who have put Rs after their names STRICTLY for political expediency, Chafee being one, and Schwarzenegger, and of course many others. The list is quite long. In my mind, electing these people only heightens the slide on the banana peel that conservatism has taken in recent years. This is a war for the soul of the country, there will be a winner and there will be a loser. No second place, no middle ground.

At this point, I’m ready to close this thread. I’ll check back for your response, but I may not respond any longer on this thread…thanks for the dialogue. I hope it leads to a more fruitful dialogue within the R party.

I believe we don’t have much of a choice but to salvage what we have. “Tough Love” will be fine once we get off the canvis but i don’t think it will ever be in our best internists to be forcing people out of the party. Indeed, I believe a lot of this is propelled by self-aggrandizement.

“I am eager for a strong, conservative leader who will galvanize the party,”

Me too, a genuine conservative; not one who wants to set up an inverse of the liberal nanny state (A “conservative” nanny state which is an oxymoron.) which is also a popular theme here.

“That’s why so many people are excited about Gov. Palin, Gov. Jindal,”

Both of them will be raked over the coals by the press. Jindal is a creationist who has attended an exorcism. Palin might be up to the task in 4 years but she was just too green this time around.

“I don’t agree with electing anybody who sees fit to put an “R” after their name into office, then trying to mold them into a conservative.”

    Better to elect a liberal?”

“This is a war for the soul of the country, ”

Look at where we are. We have just elected the most liberal senator in congress as president. He hasn’t chosen the leftist whack jobs but overall smart but decidedly left of center administrators.
If he doesn’t screw up in a spectacular fashion your war will have been lost and it will have been lost by the idiots who call themselves conservatives and who effectively helped to elect a liberal.

“At this point, I’m ready to close this thread. ”
