A non-crazy Christmas ornament at the White House

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 5, 2008 12:37 PM

Finally, something merry!

Katie Schools’ vision of Virginia is hanging on the Christmas tree of America’s first family.

First lady Laura Bush presented the White House Christmas tree yesterday on national television, and Katie’s ornament was singled out on several morning programs.

The 8-year-old Henrico County girl depicted a cardinal (her school mascot as well as the state bird), dogwood blossom and the Blue Ridge Mountains, in keeping with the national theme of red, white and blue.

Her talents are more remarkable considering she has limited vision and was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 1. She has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments and endured several surgeries.

Katie was asked by Rep. Eric I. Cantor to represent the 7th Congressional District on the tree. She is the youngest artist chosen this year.

“I am so pleased that first lady Laura Bush selected Katie’s ornament to highlight while showcasing the White House Christmas Tree. Like all of us, Mrs. Bush recognizes Katie’s extraordinary talents and passion for art,” Cantor said.

Katie, a second-grader at Shady Grove Elementary School in Henrico, began painting the globe in August.

“Katie loves art, and this was right up her alley,” said her mother, Susan Schools. “She always gives 110 percent to what she’s doing.”

Yeah, filth like that other “ornament” doesn’t belong in the same zip code as something like this.

What a contrast to the impeach Bush ornament. It never ceases to amaze me how talented young people are inspite of a disability and how immature adults can be in a effort to make a childish point.

The little artist’s story is remarkable!

Michelle, I need to tell everyone that Laura Bush has been a fine supporter of the arts as first lady. It has been a priority with her, and I have never seen article one about it! I heard it first hand, and between the lines of news stories that slipped under the MSM radar.

What a delightful contrast to the rejected ornament–both the ornament itself and the maker! I hope she goes on to great things.

I heard this story the day after Michelle had posted about the BDS ornament from Seattle. It showed to me that you cannot buy class and dignity. Little Katie has more character in her little pinky than Deborah Lawrence will ever hope to have in her whole lifetime. I hope Lawrence feels humbled by this, though I very much doubt it.

My dear friend and her mother (who is 95 years old this year) were invited to Laura Bush’s Christmas lunch at the White House last year. I have some photos. You can see by the way Laura treats our elderly that there is nothing insincere about her. President Bush responds to the elderly the same way based on what I saw and heard from my friend. This beautiful child is blessed to have met the Bushes, and I hope she’ll treasure that.

Virginia south of Fredericksburg is one of the best places on Earth you can live. Here is more proof. Shady Grove is walking distance from my house. It’s nice to see something so positive coming from so close to home.

Now we just need to give NOVA their own state and have North and South Virginia. You can do the same in NY and make East and West New York. Eventually we would be 57 states!

NOVA is kind of ruining the entire state. That comes from someone living in Libland, Charlottesville.

Exactly. They want “change” so bad, I say give it to them and let them keep it. I grew up in Baltimore, so I know exactly where NOVA is headed. We don’t need that stain anymore.

This displays a remarkable sense of understanding the relationship between color and connotation, for an eight year old who has suffered some major setbacks with her health. Great job, Katie!

Which is what events such as this are and should be all about – to inspire, to challenge, to encourage – and not to serve as mere vehicles for middle-aged BDS afflicted professors to gain attention by making spectacles of themselves.
