The 8-year-old Henrico County girl depicted a cardinal (her school mascot as well as the state bird), dogwood blossom and the Blue Ridge Mountains, in keeping with the national theme of red, white and blue.

This displays a remarkable sense of understanding the relationship between color and connotation, for an eight year old who has suffered some major setbacks with her health. Great job, Katie!

Her talents are more remarkable considering she has limited vision and was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 1. She has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments and endured several surgeries.

Which is what events such as this are and should be all about – to inspire, to challenge, to encourage – and not to serve as mere vehicles for middle-aged BDS afflicted professors to gain attention by making spectacles of themselves.
