Back in my BOFH-->SysAdmin days we had a saying about (UC) Berkeley:

Two things of note came out of Berkeley; LSD and UNIX. This is *NOT* a coincidence.

To this day, I use BSD but never the other...

Timothy Leary anyone?

Nuclear free zone? Does this mean that xrays are out? Radiation Tx is gone?

Just where does stupidity draw a line?

Nuclear free? How will they reconcile the latest findings that simple scotch tape releases radiation when dispensed.

Or, how bout radium in watch faces?

The ignorance of the educated is so very hard to surpass.

Let's not even go into the small amount of nuclear material used in the manufacture of watches and clocks. After watching the way things are done there, I doubt anyone uses them anyway.

Bob's Kid, I bet they even REQUIRE the installation if those nasty nuclear powered smoke detectors chock full of Americiumm-241. It was discovered there at UC Berkeley by Glen Seaborg too.

Betcha they also mandate the use of CFL's. GE is a major manufacturer of CFL's and fluorescent bulbs. GE is also a major manufacturer of Nuclear reactor systems and controls. They also are a major manufacturer of Nuclear medical systems and radioisotopes.

I bet they have air conditioners with Honeywell thermostats and HVAC equipment in them.

Bet they love those fuel cell powered cars too. those fuel cells use a proton exchange membrane manufactured by 3M to generate the power.

Iowa City is also a "nuclear-weapon free" zone, although they had enough sense to specify they meant weapons, so they can still operate the U of Iowa School of Medicine.

I've always wondered how they enforce it. If I had a small warhead or even a suitcase nuke, what are they going to do to stop me?

Likewise, what's Berkeley going to do if North Korea's Dear Leader sends a nuclear missile their way? Write him a citation?

I wonder what it was doing there?
Those rascally physics grad students!

But I do have a periodic table signed by Glenn Seaborg himself, acquired by my son when he was a physics student at Cal and went to a guest lecture by Seaborg. There are a lot of loonies around there, but a lot of top-notch science is done there.

Just out of idle curiosity - Do they have any microwave ovens in Berkeley?
Or dentists, or nuclear medicine departments, or smoke detectors...

I always make sarcastic comments to my students about towns that are "nuclear free" zones, telling them how utterly impossible--not to mention pretentious--it is to say such a ridiculous thing.

Always trying to get my 2 cents worth in.

Is it okay for me to drive through Berkeley on the freeway, or do I have to bypass it and go through Sacremento?
Exactly how does one bypass Berkeley by going through Sacramento? I cannot think of a single place you would travel to where this could ever make sense.

Stark! Raving! Lunatics!

So RFID's mean transporting nuclear material through the city?

"invasive of privacy"?

These people need some invasive of brain cells.

Just to take the discourse deep into the underbrush....

The Sun is a nuclear furnace. Does Berkeley still allow sunlight to shine on the city? Or does all the tinfoil block that radiation too.

BTW libs... dont come skiing in Colorado. The ski passes now have RFID embedded in them (WITH YOUR PICTURE)! And the police ARE cracking down on everyone smoking the Ganja this year. They can track you anywhere on the mountains AND the CIA knows when you show up!!!!
