Here’s another great quote that I wish a Republican senator or representative, or anyone for that matter, would have quoted back to the Big 3 Beggars during the hearings on the Hill:

    “Money demands that you sell,
    not your weakness to men’s
    stupidity, but your talent
    to their reason.”
    - Francisco d’Anconia

Insert -Big Three business model- for “your weakness”

Insert -US Congress- for “men’s stupidity”

and the quote works perfect for the US consumer’s reason for not wanting to buy their talentless cars.

I just completed a final book in a children’s book series called The Shadow Children by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It’s an awesome series about how the government in a not too distant future completes the erosion of freedom and rights in order to “protect” and feed the people of the U.S. only to find themselves under totalitarian rule. It’s told from the perspective of 12-13 year old characters. My daughter is finally old enough to begin to read the series and we’re starting from the beginning today. It may be a series for children, but there are a lot of adults in this country who could benefit from reading it.

Well, wonder no more, as they’re just random samples from all walks of life and most are smarter then our elected officials according to a survey put out by americancivicliteracy.org .
It consists of 33 questions about our government past and present and the results are quite disappointing for us as Americans.
IIRC, college freshmen scored a 52% while seniors averaged 58% and elected officials got something like 42%.
My wife got 66% and my 15 y.o. Grandson got a 61%, and neither is a government or history buff.

This article well puts what anyone paying attention really knows: While there are crooks, thieves and bums all around Liberals relish in their crimes, the Party and media cover up for them and they seldom pay the price.Rep. Charles Rangel Chairman, of the House Ways and Means Committee, is a thief-nothing more. But he has a powerful position so he is protected as a thief.

I watched some of the House Testimony by the big three yesterday, the CEO’s in the morning, and various technical “experts” in the afternoon.

    My thoughts:

    1. Barney Frank was scary when he assured an NYU Finance Professor that there was no need to design a solution within the confines of CH 11, because the Professor was testifying before the body that wrote Ch 11 bankruptcy law and they could easily re-write it to suit the needs of the Auto Industry and Union.

    2. This was by far the scariest person that testified Jeffrey Sachs
    Director of the “Earth Institute”
When I read his bio most of his “idiocy” was explained- he obtained his PHD from Harvard in 1980, in 1980 he joined the Harvard Faculty. (i.e. he’s never had a real job) The rest of his bio basically defines him as a “super” advisor to Ban-ki Moon and Kofi Anan. Precisely what we don’t need advising the auto industry.

    3. Barney Frank pulled a fast one, and -without notifying the ranking member (republican)- he inserted another expert testimony in the afternoon panel – a minority owner of an auto dealership. However, since it was Frank only who inserted this guy, no other House Financial Services member had his testimony nor knew who he was prior to him appearing on the panel. When questioned by a Republican member during the hearing, Barney said he would reserve the right to do such a thing again and that he felt minorities were underrepresented in this discussion so he inserted the new panel member. Without telling anyone.

    4. I was pleased to see some pointed questions to Chrysler about their owner – Cerberus Capital Management – a private equity firm. However Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli was a convenient scapegoat, when asked about Cerberus, he could simply say “I don’t know” or some other innocuous statement. The person that really needs to be on the (hot seat) Panel with Ford and GM CEO’s is the CEO of Cerberus. The CEO of Cerberus is Stephen Feinberg
Here are Mr. Feinberg’s own words from a speech in September 2007:
“….he sums up the philosophy that guides his company: Reveal as little as necessary; be anonymous; be invisible. “We try to hide religiously,” he says. “If anyone at Cerberus has his picture in the paper and a picture of his apartment, we will do more than fire that person. We will kill him. The jail sentence will be worth it.” There are a few nervous laughs.

Since graduating from Princeton 25 years ago, Feinberg has never given an interview and has never been photographed by the press. Not that there has been much demand until now. On Wall Street, the C.E.O. of Cerberus Capital Management, an investment firm with $26 billion in assets.”

I think its time Mr. Feinberg showed his face and told the American Taxpayer why he’s attempting to steal billions from them.

I’d like to suggest an alternative to the auto bailout. How about bailing out taxpayers? How much would it cost to give all taxpayers a “tax holiday” for a year? No federal income tax! Lower the corporate tax rate to 20%. Let people decide how to spend their money.

They may buy cars, they may save, they may give it away, but all of these things would improve the economy more than all the bailouts.

Bailouts, whether for autos, housing, newspapers, whatever, just delay the inevitable. Let people keep more of their money.

These congresscritters can’t manage their own offices without humongous staff and other taxpayer provided benefits. Why the hubris to think they can manage any business, much less the total economy.

Wasn’t AC discovered and experimented on overseas in the 19th century? The Americans associated with it are Tesla and Westinghouse, though. Tesla sold the patent to Westinghouse, although Edison, champion of DC, tried to discredit it.

I’ll submit that my opinion is the transistor.
    1. It was an American invention (Bell Labs, 1947)
    2. It is the basis for all modern technology, such as integrated circuits (zillions of transistors etched onto silicon wafers).

A powerful statement was made — that a loved one lost their life not due to accident or illness, but due to the will of another person.

We should all remember that statement when we consider things like criminal punishments and what to do about those who would kill innocent people to advance a political goal.

Terrorists are murderers — They deserve no consideration. They are all killers, and they should be delt with like killers.

88% is about the average I’d expect for the readers of this blog – i.e. we’re smarter than the average bears!

81.82% here, I agree with the 2 question ambiguity, but I’m only a hi-school grade(356th class of 500 in ‘63) spent way too much time in the parking lot being cool smoking cancers sticks.
Didn’t get cancer, I did mange to get emphysema.

Though I truthfully hit the undergrad degree educational level, I can not swear that I got a single answer from a college course (correct or otherwise.) Eighth grade civics, yes. Tenth grade civics, yes. (Supposedly a college-level course, but not one for which I received college credit.) Parents, who were both history majors, yes. College, no. lgm, no one person invented AC, it had amazed and perplexed humans since the days of the Greeks at least, not forgetting Ben Franklin. Nikolos Tesla captured the use and control of AC..he was Serbian/American arriving in the U.S. in the 1880’s, sold his patent to Westinghouse, of course he was taken advantage of and released Westinghouse from his contract, died almost penniless where he should have been a billionaire.

I may have to agree with you(not easily done), the control of AC maybe the greatest invention in the last 2 hundred years, without it, it would be hard to imagine where we would be now…relying on DC current. It lite up the world, more ways than one.

Yesterday, I had sinus surgery to straighten out my deviated septum. I’m uncomfortable (can’t blow my nose for a week!) and have bled a lot, but it’s much improved in 24hours. I can tell already that the surgery was a good thing, because the pressure behind my left eye, which caused tension headaches, is gone! If you are considering having this done, make sure you go for the newer minimally invasive arthroscopic type surgery. There is no “packing” with this procedure.

On #30 the only choices were C and D and logically, decreasing spending (D) didn’t seem quite right during a recession.
