High noon: 5 Senate Republicans announce filibuster support

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 10, 2008 10:43 AM

At noon Eastern today, five true maverick Republicans will announce their support of a UAW bailout filibuster in Washington.

Senate sources tell me GOP Sens. Shelby, Ensign, and DeMint (as I noted yesterday) will be joined at the press conference by Sens. Vitter and Coburn. Our own Gang of Five! Loins fully girded.

Sen. Vitter will be on the Senate floor at around 11am Eastern to report that he “will use every procedural tool possible to defeat” the latest version of the bailout bill.

Which, by the way, is unavailable at this moment to the American taxpayers who will be paying for it.

Another Senate source tells me “Senate Republicans have been expecting the latest language, but Congressional Democrats haven’t shared it outside their caucus. The White House probably has the text, but they haven’t shared it” either.

There’s your open government for you.

More via the Senate Conservatives Fund:

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) announced today that he will work to block the bailout legislation for the Big 3 automakers and the UAW union. As the head of the Republican campaign committee, Ensign knows how badly the Wall Street bailout hurt Republicans in the November elections.

Conservatives should expect the President to cave and support some version of a bailout. The White House prefers to have the automakers fail sometime after the President leaves office, even if it costs taxpayers more money and costs Detroit more jobs. But it’s still not clear what position Senate Republicans will take. If there was ever a time to oppose the President and go their own way, this is it.

Sen. Ensign’s courageous decision is a positive sign. He was recently elected to head the Republican Policy Committee and his opposition to the auto bailout holds significant weight.

Senate conservatives are set to announce their plans to stop the bill at a press conference on Wednesday. They are going to buy some time so Americans can make their voices heard. Government bailouts have become commonplace in Washington and it’s time for Americans to demand change we can all believe in.

And via Bloomberg:

Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, would support an effort to filibuster the bill, his spokesman said earlier today. “He believes it’s naive to trust Congress to manage the auto industry when it can’t manage itself,” said Coburn spokesman John Hart.

Support the Republicans who support conservatism. And ask your GOP congressional representatives where they stand:

202-224-3121.

Yeah, let me tell ya, Chicago/Springfield is really make the rest of us Illinoisans look great, aren’t they? Blago brings the tally to two IL Gov’s in the clink. And we still have Obama and Durbin…
As I said on the previous thread concerning this: I’d take these three five Republicans and dump almost all of the rest. At least then their platform would be consistent and different than the one espoused by the DNC. “Conservatives” can only win by effectively arguing the point that their ideas are different and better than those of the DNC/liberal Republicans. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi are giving the R’s plenty of proverbial rope, if only the rest of the RNC doesn’t get weak-kneed and join the DNC in their efforts.
Bottom line: The RNC needs a Bobby Knight figure to get a case of the ass and show some leadership. Compromise/bipartisanship = acknowledgement that your idea sucks.

The $700 Billion bailout was a manufactured crisis.

If John McCain had led a filibuster of in September, the November 4th election would have gone very differently. He could have proven that he is not “McSame”, not “running for Bush’s third term”, and serious about reform.

Instead, he led Republicans to the slaughter.

And I’m not convinced it wasn’t intentional.

Many Republicans who didn’t want to support the bailout did so because of pressure from the Republican “leadership”, while Democrats in tight races were allowed by their leadership to vote against it.

Democratic Socialists control the highest levels of both the Democrat and Republican parties.

The Republicans who support this current filibuster are the Republicans who can be trusted.

How many times have we said “enough is enough???” Not another dime?? I have contacted my Senator Kyl’s office and the “official statement” is that the auto companies need to do what is necessary to get themselves out of their own problems.

Thanks be for that. Jon Kyl can be a bit wobbly supporting McCain from time to time but at his core he is a Conservative. Now the Juan Hernandez McCain has self destructed we expect the wobbly to stop.
Senator Kyl is also fighting the UnFairness Doctrine.

David Vitter has really walked the walk on conservatism as a Senator. I was sick when his name came up in the hooker probe, and that bit of stupidity will follow him around forever, but I can unequivocally say that I am proud of the job he is doing for Louisiana.

You beat me to it. BTW, about the “hooker probe”. At least Vitter’s conscience got the better of him and he confessed to his wife and went to counseling long before he it was made public. How many politicians can you name that actually have a conscience?

How about last weeks vote to oust Jefferson? About &^%$ time huh?

judge the last bailout by results. stock market down 25% from the vote date, no more credit, in fact less. 2nd bailout of aig and continued corruption by the bailout recipients. meanwhile, the indybank went belly up and assets of that bank were auctioned off and sold. the banks won’t sell off their assets unless they have to, and as long as they can keep getting money from the taxpayer, they can hold these degraded assets in the hope they will grow in the future. unfortunately we mere mortal americans don’t have a gravy train, so we have to sell our devalued assets to make our ends meet. damn, when are taxpayers going to have a lobby like bankers, insurance co’s, or the auto industry. gm had 30b dollars during the summer, about 10b today, and they think 14b will tide them over until march. MAGIC BUCKS.
