Last night, I blogged about Dong Yun Yoon, the extraordinary American who lost his wife, toddler daughter Rachel, infant daughter Grace, and mother-in-law in the military jet crash in San Diego.
Reader David talked to Yoon’s pastor, who said you can send card and help directly to his church.

My nephew is in the squadron the plane came from. They want to attend the funeral and express their sorrow to Mr. Yoon, but are worried about reactions from some people there. Their public affairs is advising them on how to proceed.
It would be helpful though on your website if you note that the pilot didn’t accidentally kill anybody. His plane failed. The pilot made no error of any kind we can discern.
I feel for this family, especially since my wife is the former Carol Yoon. With the gracious kindness and sympathy that Mr. Dong Yun Yoon himself has shown, he can only be considered as having a beautiful soul. Having grown up in the Marine Corps community and having served for many years as did my two older brothers and my father did, and my nephew does now,
I can assure you that Mr. Yoon’s pain will be felt by Marine families across the globe. They will reach out to him in both kindness and generosity. And they will be there for him during the long period of sorrow he will face.
Thanks for your care both for the military and our nation as a whole.

Do you know anything about the pilot? I just know he must be suffering over knowing what he accidently did.
God will see him through this. There are many fellow Christians who are offering up prayers for this young man and his loss.
How refreshing to see forgiveness and understanding as opposed to bitterness and placing blame.
Just when I think that this country has turned the corner toward perdition, I see something like this.
The gratitude is overwhelming.
I don’t know if it’s been mention elsewhere, but I hope that people also reserve some sympathy for the Navy pilot whose aircraft killed these people. I would guess that he’s probably on the edge of suicidal himself. Contrary to the opinions of the media, the left, and John Murtha, one of the worst things that can happen to a GI is to kill innocents.
What a man. What a human. To not only ask people to pray for the pilot but to call the man (accidentally) responsible for his family’s deaths a hero takes steel I’m afraid I don’t possess.
All the cards and help in the world can’t make up for Mr. Dong’s loss. But they can let people know that they’re praying and care for him. God Bless.

I have no words to express how sorry I am for the loss that Mr. Yoon is enduring.
The thoughts and prayers of my entire family are with you, Sir.
I still can’t bring myself to watch the video at work. I would cry too hard. I could never imagine losing my children – never. We will send a card with our prayer.
I think it’s likely to be Mr. Dong. Korean custom, as it is in many Asian countries, is family name first, and Koreans tend not to adopt first-name-first order.
Mr. Dong is, without a doubt, the most humble man in the world.

So true. Impossible to miss the distinction between this hard-working, honest, legal immigrant to America and the avarice, selfishness, cowardice and corruption of natural-born “Americans” like ol’ Gov. Douchebagojevich.

Ah, yes.
In Korea, Christians go to church at 5 am and pray and worship for 12 to 14 hours. If you don’t get there by 5:30 am you don’t get in, there are that many praying worshiping Christians. There are no chairs, they stand all day.
It is truly amazing.
This man is a witness to the power and love of Christ.
He has done more ‘Good’ in a few words than many pastors could do in a lifetime.

Lost for words…I can only say, may this fine young American citizen find the strength to help him through this most tragic time of his life.
Beyond belief. This is a example of a man that they do not make to many of. I pray for Him and His entire family. The pilot must be going through hell. For a man to come out and say what this man did is a example to all of us in this world how to conduct our lives. I couldn’t do it. God Bless you Sir. And god bless the pilot and his family also for he also has a heavy load to carry which he had no control of.
I fear that some mealy-mouthed liberal lawyer will try to get Mr. Dong to sue the government. Hopefully, he will refuse.
I’m sure the Marine Corps has told the pilot to say nothing. However, I think both the pilot and Mr. Dong need to meet. For a shared prayer, if nothing else.
May God bless you, Mr. Dong. I don’t know what I would do if I lost my wife and children. I would hope to be just like you; beside myself with grief to be sure, but understanding as well. You are a true American.

My recent losses in my personal life are insignificant compared to this mans loss. I am truly grieved for his loss and the pain the pilot is undoubtedly dealing with. His humility and grace puts my personal life in perspective.
I agree, sgcwi. Sometimes it is better to take the body blow for what you’ve done. In this case, Mr. Dong is forgiving the pilot. I don’t think I’d be able to look Mr. Dong in the eye. There is no way to calculate the misery the pilot will feel in the years to come for the pain he has caused.
This is a true tradgey. But it proves there are good people in this world; better people than I. My prayers are for both of those that are suffering.
This is what the grace of God looks like.
Thank you Mrs. Malkin for introducing to your loyal community a man who is himself truly a “treasure of our country”. We cannot fathom His will, but can draw strength for this life from such earthly grace through grief.

This is a man that understands the randomness of life and has chosen to absolve those that could suffer in his own pain. Although I could probably do the same thing in private, he has gone far beyond any necessity to show it in public.
There will be long nights ahead.
The one thing in the world I fear is the loss of my family. I cannot fathom the depth of this man’s pain.

You, Sir, are the epitome of what is right and good with America. Your sympathy and understanding is an example of what we can only wish we were getting with our elected politicians. Very few of them will EVER be the MAN you have proven yourself to be. May God’s be always with you.

I live less than a mile from the crash, and saw the black smoke billowing and the pilot parachuting to safety from my office. Truly a terrible, frightening, tragic event in my own neighborhood. My heart goes out to this family and this poor man.
We had a similar incident in Houston a few decades ago. I immediately thought of Gary Herod when I heard the story.

May God bless and restore Mr. Dong and also the pilot. Both are going down into the valley. There will one day be a mountain top on the other side, God willing.
I agree that this hopefully does not turn into a contentious lawsuit against the government. But, I also hope that the government does the right thing and compensates this man for his tragic loss without delay.
No one deserves to suffer like this. May he find the strength he needs to live his life happily.
Everybody knows that bad things like this don’t happen now that Obama is going to be President soon.

I think I see the character of Job before us. I don’t think I’d have the strength of character to be so composed or to ask for help. I be in a fetal position.
In this season of Hope and Love, this Brother in Christ needs to have us reach out to him. And he admonishes us not to spare the Pilot. Christmas is about such things. Thank you for reminding us. May you experience the Peace that surpasses ALL understanding.

It seems incredible but it is true that the trial lawyers lobby group actually has conferences and has classes on how to sue the United States for injuries as a result of accidents that involve the armed forces of the US. The trial lawyers lobby actually teaches clever techniques to get around issues like sovereign immunity, immunity for actions of the US armed forces and I think they even teach how to sue individual soldiers or sailors. And they always bring these lawsuits in California so that if a US District Judge tosses out the case, the trial lawyers simply go to the wacky 9th Circuit Court of Appeals which still has a majority of judges appointed by Jimmy Carter.
How does one find words of comfort in this situation that could possibly suffice?
Mr. Yoon, You have my deepest sympathies, and may Jesus Christ be close and comfort you in this time of sore trial. You are an inspiration to us all. God bless you.
The only wway to get through a loss like this is one day- sometimes even one breath- at a time.

For all who hurt, I would also suggest listening to “Praise You in this storm”…it always makes me cry but the message helps to heal.
This is what it looks like the next time you hear someone say “I trust in Jesus Christ…I’ve been born again…been given a new life in Him…His grace is sufficient for me”.
Only Christ can produce this kind of fruit in a person. It is truly strength from above. God bless this man.
Marc: The trial lawyers are the complete opposite of this fine Christian man. They should have half of the integrity, the intestinal fortitude and the faith that Mr. Yoon has in his pinky finger.
To even think someone would sue the Soldiers, Sailor, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who are defending our freedoms for being involved in an accident is beyond belief. Perhaps if they did something malevolent…
I flew fighters (A-10 and F-16) in the Air Force for 22 years and although never faced with such a decision as this Marine pilot, I knew I would do everything in my power to keep a stricken aircraft from falling on a populated area.
Having been there and trying to land an aircraft with a major emergency (engine failure, hydraulic failure, electrical failure, etc, etc,), I can guarantee he was struggling mightily to keep his aircraft in the air and get it back on the ground so it could be saved, the problem identified and perhaps prevent a repeat incident in this type aircraft.
However, his piloting skills were overwhelmed at some point or the aircraft became uncontrollable and he had to eject, which I can guarantee was not an easy thing to do — it is NOT a carnival ride, can seriously injure you and, since he ejected at such a low altitude, there was the very real possibility he would have fallen into the resulting fireball.
I had a young pilot in my squadron who ejected from a plane at very low altitude and it affected him to the point he never flew again — and nobody was hurt on the ground!
The price of Freedom is sometimes almost unbearably heavy. My condolences to this brave man for his loss.
JoAnn, that is a beautiful song with a powerful message. Another one that comes to mind that goes something like this “Sometimes He calms the storm, sometimes He lets the storm rage and calms His child…”
After watching this press and hearing Mr. Yoon speak I broke down in tears … the strength of faith and character that he displays is an inspiration for me to be a better person.

I have been swamped at work getting ready to take next week in vacation and haven’t even seen this story until now. How terribly heartbreaking for this man. I hate when terrible things happen to people like this. We’ll be praying for this gentleman.
His Pastor said it: Sometimes hardship brings out the best in men. This is one of them. What a good person this husband and father is.

A few thoughts, for this website,
Death hangs its head in the place I live and we have reminders everywhere of those around us at my camp in Iraq of those who are no longer with us. I attended a service only a few days ago that was actually not combat related (he passed on vacation) but too many have died here to not notice any. Death is never easy and some are more difficult to explain.
Dong’s faith inspires because those closest to him were taken from him and his living faith is unbelievable. His faith in the Redeemer shows others that Christ is alive and conquers all in this world.
