Chicago-bonics: New edukashun sekretary flunks grammer tooday

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 16, 2008 01:50 PM

An impromptu flub would be one thing. But Obama Education Secretary-designate — and Harvard grad — Arne Duncan was reading from a prepared text. Guess they teach inventive grammar at Haaaaahvahd.

Snort.

Only as compared to every last prominent Liberal. Some things we have to accept on a sliding scale.

But I am just a gun totin’, Bible thumping Bitter American well aware of Barrack Hussein Obama’s lies about his stand on the Second. And I have no problem producing my Birth Certificate when asked for legitimate reason–such as a job.

But one does not wish to seem harsh. At least the Presidnet elect is NOT promoting Williams Ayres as his New edukashun sekretary. I guess Old Billie is holding out for the Reinhard Heydrich Chair Department of Security and Settlement Operations.

My personal peeve (I refuse to keep them as pets.) is “axed”. I was once on a jury panel going through voir dire when the defendant’s attorney stood up and started “axing” everyone questions. I just wanted to scream out loud “You Freakin idiot! You went to school for HOW MANY YEARS to get your law degree? And you STILL can’t speak freakin English?” I wanted to convict the lawyer along with his client (Who wasn’t exactly an angel himself. He was using a big chunk of concrete to beat his girlfriend in the head when he was arrested.).

Note to any lawyers out there: Learn to speak English, or your client will suffer the punishment that the jury cannot, by law, give you.

No wonder kids these days don’t know grammar. The distinction between “I” and “me” is pretty easy: he’s obviously far, far from the distinction between “who” and “whom” and “loan” [noun] and “lend” [verb].

Kevin K., I certainly agree with your grammar concerns for kids these days. However, I disagree with your comment about using “loan” as a transitive verb. Websters agrees with me.

usage The verb loan is one of the words English settlers brought to America and continued to use after it had died out in Britain. Its use was soon noticed by British visitors and somewhat later by the New England literati, who considered it a bit provincial. It was flatly declared wrong in 1870 by a popular commentator, who based his objection on etymology. A later scholar showed that the commentator was ignorant of Old English and thus unsound in his objection, but by then it was too late, as the condemnation had been picked up by many other commentators. Although a surprising number of critics still voice objections, loan is entirely standard as a verb. You should note that it is used only literally; lend is the verb used for figurative expressions, such as “lending a hand” or “lending enchantment.”

My intention isn’t to nitpick today, but I don’t think that acceleration is implied by the term “high rate of speed.” Rate is defined as a “reckoned value.” Therefore, “rate of speed” implies reckoned value of speed.

A mention of a change in speed is what would imply acceleration. I don’t think the word ‘rate’ describes change. However, I’m open to discussing this.

Meh. Has Obama said things that he knew were untrue? Of course. Did he pander with viewpoints he did not support in the campaign? Yes. So he’s dishonest. I don’t think he’s pathological on the Clinton-Bush-Palin scale of “I did not sleep with that woman,” or “I told them thanks but no thanks for that Bridge to Nowhere,” or “the British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa (the CIA says they’re full of crap, but I won’t tell you that),” but he’ll probably prove me wrong. Wait. On one hand, Bush should trust CIA when they diminish British intelligence reports about yellow cake inquiries, but on the other hand, Bush shouldn’t have trusted CIA when their assessments indicated that Saddam Hussein was in possession of WMDs? I’m confused.

Gee, I hope Obama knows when and when not to trust CIA.
