Akon update: Thug singer admits throwing boy off stage

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 17, 2008 06:03 PM

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you are familiar with my legal battle over a video I created criticizing thug singer Akon’s lewd on-stage behavior with an underage girl. We won that legal battle. Akon “apologized” in a song called “Sorry” — and then went on to engage in even more thuggish behavior by throwing a boy off stage at a New York concert.

Today, he admitted in court that he tossed the kid. Guess what? No jail time. No consequences:

Hip-hop star Akon pleaded guilty Wednesday to harassment for tossing a fan off stage at an upstate New York concert last year.

He will serve no jail time as long he performs 65 hours of community service and pays a $250 fine, according to the plea bargain in Fishkill Town Court.

The 35-year-old singer threw a teenage boy off the stage during a June 2007 concert at a minor league baseball stadium near Poughkeepsie. Another concertgoer said she suffered a concussion when the teen landed on her.

Witnesses said a spectator threw something at Akon during the show at Dutchess Stadium. After he asked the crowd to point out the culprit, a security guard picked up a 15-year-old boy and sent him up to the stage. Akon hoisted the teen onto his shoulders and flung him into the crowd. The incident was caught on videotape.

After the plea, Akon shook hands with Anthony Smith, the now 16-year-old fan, and apologized to him and his parents.

Akon declined comment as he left, but Andrea Zellan, his lawyer, issued a written statement saying, “We are pleased that the case has been resolved and Akon looks forward to putting this unfortunate incident behind him.”

Akon, born Aliaune Thiam, was originally charged with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree harassment, a violation.

Dutchess County Assistant District Attorney Anthony Parisi could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday morning.

Before the New York incident, Akon drew criticism when he was videotaped simulating sex onstage with a teenage girl during an April 2007 concert in Trinidad. He later apologized and said he hadn’t know the girl was underage.

Guess now Akon doesn’t have to fake a criminal past.

You’ll also recall that Verizon Wireless dropped its sponsorship of Akon after the Trinidad incident. Commenter Mookie noted recently that Verizon was back to featuring Akon on its VCAST music download page.

So much for corporate responsibility.

It’s all about the Benjamins.

There is no need to point out why the sentence was so light. New York, so strapped for cash, I would have thought they would have tried to get a little hand out.

It’s funny, I glanced a little at Oprah today, she had on Will Smith who talked about how blacks are not accepted in America with Oprah nodding on approvingly and the audience applauding. One day black people will realize that their rich elite blacks have no concern whatsoever for the common man, be it black or white. A truth white people already know. I know better if Bill Gates was on tv talking about how whites are not accepted in America that does not mean me and ol’ Bill are in the same league. I wonder if any everyday black people really thought that one day they would be at Will’s house having cocktails with him and Oprah? I bet alot of them actually do.

What can Will Smith mean? Blacks are what percentage of the population? They don’t accept themselves? And don’t the large number of people who don’t give a rat’s rear end a person’s color (only the content of their character, to borrow a phrase) count either as America? It sounds as though Smith has been sniffing the film-developing chemicals too long.

Come on…didn’t you get my subtle, yet scathing, commentary on the absurdity of admitting to something that is entirely obvious?

To answer your question…I tried this new Sam Adams Imperial Pilsner (I am all about the hoppy beers lately) and my old standby Vodka and Tonic.

We should all write the mayor of Fishkill to explain to him why we won’t be visiting and doing business in that town. Appaprently there is no law and order there. We should write the judge and the Chamber of Commerce as well. MAybe even some of the businesses in that town. Nothing speaks louder than money and they will not be happy to hear they will not be getting any of ours. Also, what minor league team plays there and who owns the stadium? Who sponsered the “concert”? White them all and let them know they won’t get any business from us, our friends, family, associates, etc. Go after the slime that let this scumbag off with no punishment. If you don’t live in New York, write the Governor and tell him you cancelled plans to visit. Money really does talk (just ask the Governor of Illinois).

$250 fine plus whatever money paid to get his “hours” checked off. I doubt he’ll do any community service. $250 fine? That’s like fining me $2. Probably had that in his pocket. The whole thing was a waste of time and taxpayer money. I’m sure Akon knows that, being in the news, will sell more CDs. He’s the winner in all of this.

with no consequences for bad behavior, you get more bad behavior. ask any parent. too bad our judges seem to have been too busy in court to pay attention to their children, or they would know better. this is my reason for always voting against any judge on any ballot. throw them out and replace them with robots. you killed someone, 20 to life, with special circumstances, death by drawn and quartering.

I like some classical music, but you don’t need to go back hundreds of years to find decent music. Zeppelin, the Stones, Queen and the Who all created fantastic music. I gather the Beatles also have a small following.

Speaking of the Beatles, remember when the nation was scandalized by their hair? Now we countenance on-stage assault. How far we’ve come… in the wrong direction.
