Paul Weyrich, R.I.P.

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 18, 2008 10:35 AM

Very sad to hear of the passing of conservative giant Paul Weyrich. Rob Bluey at the Heritage Foundation, which Weyrich co-founded, has the announcement. For those who didn’t know, Weyrich had a spinal injury that left him in constant pain and confined to a wheelchair. The physical limitations, however, could not keep him from his work. Weyrich was a tireless champion of the Right ’til the very end. He sent out Free Congress Foundation commentaries almost daily — one of the last ones shed light on the Minnesota Senate race shenanigans. His critical role in the establishment of the Right’s intellectual and communications infrastructure cannot be emphasized enough. R.I.P.

In looking at the long history of conservative politics, from the defeat of Robert Taft in 1952, to the nomination of Barry Goldwater, to the takeover of the Republican Party in 1994, I think it is fair to say that conservatives have learned to succeed in politics. That is, we got our people elected.

But that did not result in the adoption of our agenda. The reason, I think, is that politics itself has failed. And politics has failed because of the collapse of the culture. The culture we are living in becomes an ever-wider sewer. In truth, I think we are caught up in a cultural collapse of historic proportions, a collapse so great that it simply overwhelms politics.

2008 has been like the Conservative Rapture: William F. Buckley, Tony Snow, Dean Barnett, and now Mr. Weyrich. The rest of us are Left Behind.

What a damn shame. I know 66 doesn’t seem young, but it seems way too young to be leaving this world.

    RIP, Paul.

As this generation of conservatives passes we need to pray for the next generation. Right now I fear not enough of us are praying enough because the ranks look pretty thin and the cost of offering to serve are pretty high.
