Sorry for the light blogging. I’m in bed after getting hit with the same awful bug that sent my son to the ER on Monday and behind on filing my syndicated column for tomorrow. Just one of those days! Got a couple of posts for you in a bit. Talk amongst yourselves.

So the infamous “Lizard People” ballot issue has been decided by the Minnesota Canvasing Board.
It had been counted as a vote for Franken. The Board upheld Coleman’s challenge, stating that it was an “identifying mark” (you are not allowed to identify yourself on the ballot) because it was possible that “Lizard People” was a real person.
Regardless of what you thin about Franken, that is kinda dumb.

Keep yourself hydrated with piping hot caffeinated (not de- ) green tea and bananas are best; if you’re having trouble keeping things down, mashed bananas with applesauce on saltines should help. Get well soon!

Not sure if it’s the same bug, but my daughter came down with some crud yesterday while taking exams at school. Spent most of her time in bed after school and today. Doc says it’s a 72 hour thing. Oh yeah, and it’s contagious.

Also reminds me of a tour DH and I took a long time ago through the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg, TN. Lynchburg is in a dry county, so the tour guide (a down-home, country boy) said they wouldn’t be giving samples at the end of the tour. “But”, he said, “if y’all walk real slow and breathe real deep ….”

My family remedy for feeling better when sick: Vicks vapo-rub on the soles of your feet, then cover with socks.
Dont ask me why it works…it just does..probably cuz my Nonni said so!!!!

Oh great! Now all of us are going to get it. I use a lot of Vicks Vaporub on my chest, neck and in my nose. I also drink tea with lemon for scratchy throat. None of the remedies are cures, but sure are comforting!

The only cure is to take an aspirin and sleep for 4 years.
Michelle, your parents’ remedy of hot calamansi juice usually does the trick. But since calamansis are hard to come by, lemon juice is the next best thing. Lots of vitamin C.
I like to drink lots of beer. Doesn’t really help any but you won’t care either. Get well soon.
Sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well, Michelle. Then again, the kind of news we’ve been seeing the past few weeks would make anybody ill.
I finally got over a nasty cold bug that lasted about 2 weeks. It just lingered. Now, I think my husband has the same thing. People in his office are all sick and either they gave it to him or I did.
I wish people would develop a better sense of personal hygiene. Somebody can just cough or sneeze on you and then you get sick. Yuck.
Hope you get better soon, Michelle. I’ve heard that lots of warm fluids like soup and tea help loads.

I hope you and your son make a speedy recovery. Having had some kind of cold/virus for over a month, I understand it is very unpleasant, to say the least. Parents continue to send their kids into school sick daily, so it’s difficult to get rid of it all.

On a happier note I am going to attend my first gun show on Saturday. I am thinking about getting a shotgun. Any suggestions about what to look for? I have two hand guns that were my grandfathers but other than that I know almost nothing about guns.

The Remington Model 870 is one of the best selling guns in the USA. There’s thousands of them on the used gun market at reasonable prices.
Think Remington, Winchester, or Mossberg. The Army, Navy, and Air Force use Mossberg Model 590′s. I, myself, have a Mossberg Model 500 Persuader, an extended magazine police type shotgun.

I know a shotgun may seem like an ideal weapon for the upcoming zombie invasion. But I beg you to reconsider, for your sake and your family’s.
Oh hE#l…. get a Winchester model 1897 pump gun…the one the Germans actually went to the Geneva convention headquarters during WWI and tried to get it banned from military use.
I’m sorry to tell your all, but aspirin is not good for colds or the flu. The temp. is natures way of warding off infection and aspirin just prolongs the illness by taking the temp down. My hubby swears by several glasses of cherry brandy. You sweat like crazy, but you get over it earlier. Thats his story he is sticking to.

Reason? The Winchester model 1897 did not have a trigger disconnector…thereby allowing the shooter to merely hold the trigger all the way back and just stroke the pump action as fast as possible to get shots out…to visulaize what that would look like think of the opening to the “The Rifleman” with Chuck Conners and replace his rifle with a model 1897 pump shotgun.
No wonder the Germans were afraid of it in the trenches-especially with a bayonet mounted on it.

Semi-auto 12 gauge all purpose (shoots 3-1/2″ magnum shells to). They have a win-choke system that allows you to adjust your patern for just about any purpose. Gas powered recoil lets you adjust the kick-back as well.

Looks like I’m not the only one who got sick this week. Get well soon Michelle. My fav part of putting up with a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, coughing and sneezing is the fun side effect of swollen vocal cords making my voice drop even lower than it already is. As it is already in the low range to start, the swollen cords put me right into the perfect range to sing “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch” in manner that is guaranteed to send kids running away in fear.

Yes, a 20 gauge is better for a woman’s shoulder (unless you are a Russian woman on steroids). If you are tougher than most, you could step up to a 16g. If you are real tough and only want to shoot it a few times, step up to a 12g. If you want to go to an early grave with one less arm, 10g.
The one time I had the flu, this grandma felt as though I had been run over by a reindeer, so I feel for you, Michelle.

True…If on the other hand we were talking about semi-auto shotguns, the gauge size wouldn’t really matter for a woman (because so much of the otherwise painful recoil is absorbed by the weapon’s cycling when fired), just the shotgun’s pull length will matter….can she comfortably hold and operate the trigger (and the trombone part of the pump shotgun as needed for consideration)?

While the semi-auto 12g recoil will be less harmfum, they can be long and heave. CHECK THIS OUT.
You can get them in 12g, 20g, 28g and 410g – all semi-auto. Hopefully, you can try some out before you buy so you know what you are comfortable with. A 410g can dispatch squirrels and zombies with equal prejudice!

Michelle, sorry your under the weather. I am a fairly new member, and I just am enjoying being part of this group so much. It’s even cool to hear from you when your not feeling good, like we are all friends.
If you are up for some preventative advice:
Back in 1988 I was working at the local elemetary school with preschool handicap, I was sick all year! On the way home one afternoon, I had James Dobson’s program on, he had a homeschool advocate on (can’t recall name now) who had been a missionary in Japan. He was getting all kinds of maladys while there. The Dr told him to drink a quart of warm water a half an hour before breakfast. At that time, it had been 20 years since he’d had any sickness. I thought, that’s for me! So the next morning I got my 32 oz of water warmed up and chugged it! My body said, not in here…and it left my body…so I started gradually working up to 32 oz and I can count on one hand being sick since then, and that’s when I slacked off on the water.

Last year my doctor told me “I knew you had the flu when all I heard was that you wanted to die and that you didnt care.”
I was deathly sick for 10 days… I really only wanted to die for Six days. But thank goodness for the very compassionate Marriott staff who took care of me and got me through the first 4 of them.
So I probably should apologize to the all of the other passengers that were on the flight home with me
Sleep heals. Get plenty of it. And don’t worry about the inmates, they can linger around the asylum for a while without the warden.

you have opened a topic of great debate, watch em come…we all have opinions on many topics as you know, the 2nd amendment is no different.. Personally using logic and the need to defend and repel an intruder, I’m convinced a shotgun is the way to go. It is safe to use and much less fear of hitting an innocent if the weapon is fired. Good luck at the show…keep us posted on the outcome.

Did I mentioned the time that the military quarantined me and LOST me for two weeks?
My doctor managed to ship me cross country to the Philladelphia military hospital that no longer existed and the taxi driver just dropped me at the front gate of the nearest military base because he didnt want to deal with me.
Two weeks later, someone accidently came to change the sheets on the other bed in the room (yeh no one checked on me all that time) and I told them they couldnt come in my room.
Talk about an all hands evolution to figure out who I was then….

Texas T, Winchester 870 Home Protection is a great choice, it is 12 gauge, may have more of a kick than you’d care for…not to worry, different gauges for different sizes as well. The link I sent you, gives loads of advice and suggestions. Once again good luck.
Texas T. I’m about to give you some advice. This is in no way tounge in cheek advice either. This is the straight scoop and I will attach links for further reading.
20 gauge will do in a pinch, but a 12 gauge will give you more pellets to work with.
DO NOT purchase a semi-auto Shotgun. They are not as reliable as a pump action. You DO NOT NEED to be struggling trying to clear a misfed shell caused by a plugged up gas operated action in the heat of battle. RELIABILITY in a personal protection weapon is KEY.
Mossberg 500 series is the standard by which other riot guns are judged. they are simple and they are reliable.

And this is the way to store it.
Another advantage is that they do not overpenetrate the way a pistol or rifle can.
One other reason to chose a 12 gauge over a 20 or 16 is that there is a large variety of different loads you can choose including low-recoil loads.
Do not use birdshot, birdshot is for birds. Dick Cheney shot a guy with birdshot and it didn’t even knock him down. Use nothing smaller than buckshot. You don’t want to wound the guy and leave him capable of returning fire or worse. You want the threat eliminated with one shot. Select a shotgun with an 18.5″ barrel, a shoulder stock,not a pistol grip, you won’t be able to aim worth a flip with a pistol grip. And if anyone tells you you do not need to aim a shotgun, they are full of crap. A shotgun pattern at 8-10 feet is only a couple inches across, you can EASILY miss in the heat of battle if you do not take the time to aim.
I gave you links to a number of knowledgeable people (Two of which are fellow Texans like myself). those are not by any means the only posts they have on the subject. Take the time to read their writings before you buy.

I do agree that up until recently for personal defense, I’d pick a pump over a semi-auto (just as years ago there was a belief that revolvers were more reliable than semi-autos)…that is beginning to change as women are coming into the gun buying market and soldiering.
Chapoutier, I’m in Texas. I wasn’t born here, but I got here as fast as I was able! BTW, I carry! I like the concealed thing, as a 5′ blonde female, they still don’t know if I carry or not, but it makes them wonder! Hubby got me a special purse. It has a built-in holster!
