Send a card to Hannah

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 20, 2008 06:01 AM

Click here for a photo slideshow of 4-year-old Hannah Garman of Lancaster County, Pa., who was diagnosed with a rare, incurable brain tumor in October. Hannah’s mother died of cancer two years ago. Hannah has a Christmas wish and her community is spreading the word: Send her a card.

Day by Day’s Chris Muir sent his in cartoon form.

You can send yours to:

Hannah Garman
259 North Reading Rd.
Ephrata, Pa. 17522

(Hat tip – Sgt. Tim)

From Hannah’s local newspaper:

Lights flashing, they drove north through the darkness Thursday, a caravan of about 70 fire trucks, ambulances and police cars headed toward a small, red-headed girl in a party dress.

Hannah Garman, 4, quietly watched them pulling into a parking lot. She was lying on a litter just outside an ambulance, her pink shoes poking out of a white sheet. Hannah, who lives in Lititz with her dad, brother and sister, recently was diagnosed with a fatal form of brain cancer. Her mom, Christine, died from cancer two years ago.

Hannah’s wish for Christmas this year was to get lots of cards. That wish went out in an e-mail late last week. Her family believes it was sent by someone who knows them but they are not sure.

It would be an understatement to say that Hannah’s wish has been granted.

Within days, cards began trickling into the Lititz home of her grandparents, who are helping to care for her. The trickle became a stream, then a torrent, then a flood of hundreds of cards from all over the world, as the e-mail spread over the Internet.

School children made cards. Churches sent them. Families and kids and everybody and his brother, from Canada to Mexico to Singapore, has gotten in on the action.

When county firefighters heard about Hannah, they thought it would be nice if they could send her some cheer, too.

Merry Christmas, Hannah. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Always when it seems that the bad news outweighs the good, a story like this one comes along. It shows that we are a caring people who will reach out to someone who is in need and try to do our best to help. That help is not always financial. That is what being a Christian nation is all about. God Bless little Hannah and her family.

Last night, my wife and I found out that my cat, Lucky, has cancer. He has been sick for the past three months, but after seeing three different vets and administering medication, he has not gotten better.

I’ve been crying off and on, but I’m trying to hold back because I want to be strong for my wife.

Surgery is an option, but the internal med vet (one different than the other three he has seen) said he probably would not make it. He’s not drinking water or eating as much as he used to. He’s not playing or sleeping with me the way he used to.

We have made the extremely difficult decision of giving him to God.

In the meantime, we’re spending as much time with him as possible. I prayed last night for God to help me, but I know the inevitable is coming.

To my friends who posted words of support in the open thread a couple of days ago, thank you very much. Especially to tre, who’s on a couple of occasions given me words of support.

I’m going to miss my Lucky so very much.

To all of you, a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May God smile on you and yours now and forever.

I won’t be reading the news for a while. I’ll be too depressed.

This really hits close to home with me. Last year, my (now) 7 year old nephew, Mick, was diagnosed with this exact same tumor. There is 1 in 1 million chance that children can beat this. We were not sure if Mick would make it last year. I am happy to report that the tumor is shrinking slowly. He did lose some movement on the left side of his body due to radiation damage, but through therapy he is making strides you cannot imagine.

I will be sending my cards to Hannah on Monday. Thank you for the report, Michelle!

The Rose Still Grows Beyond The Wall

The rose still grows beyond the wall
Near shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God’s free light,
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.

As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
    Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
Through which there shone a beam of light.

Onward it crept with added strength,
    With never a thought of fear or pride;
It followed the light through the crevice-length
And unfolded itself on the other side.

The light, the view, the broadening view,
    Were found the same as they were before;
And it lost itself in beauties new,
Breathing its fragrance more and more.

Shall claim of death cause us to grieve
And make our courage faint or fall?
    Nay, let us faith and hope receive;
The rose still grows beyond the wall,

    Scattering fragrance far and wide,
Just as it did in days of yore,
Just as it did on the other side,
    Just as it will forevermore.

Ok, the address that is posted here was taken off of the slide show. That is the address the family gave to the news station to give out for cards. So, I would imagine that either address is good, but the one posted here is the one the family has given out to the media.

    From Hannah’s dad:

    SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2008 12:26 AM, EST

Where do I start? First some numbers. I think Hannah is going to pull the post office out of the red this year. We are still counting but so far Thur. night’s total is 5400. I’m estimating we have counted a little above half. For those sending cards: Wed-750 cards Thur-2000 cards-which USPS brought in 4 boxes Fri-didn’t even begin to count–11 large boxes!!! Firetruck convoy count was 89 firetrucks & 40 or so police-rescue-smaller vehicles!!!!

Thur. night was an incredible night. I am having a hard time putting into words how thankful & grateful my family & I are for such a wonderful community. Our EMS family is incredible for what they pulled together in a matter of 3 days. Hannah really enjoyed the evening. We unloaded her out of the ambulance near the entrance so she could watch the vehicles. She loved all the lights and kept telling me “that is a short one” or “that is a really big one”. After we got inside, her eyes lit up over all the toys & bags of cards on stage. She spent almost 2 hours opening cards on her gurney. After we went home she opened some more & then slept really good.

Words can’t begin to express the magnitude of love & caring we felt from our neighbors-friends-family-strangers last night. Sometimes, with the economy the way it is, and all the hustle & bustle of the holiday season you can feel a little down and have pity on yourself for the situation I’m in. Then, we get an outpouring of love from so many, most of which I don’t even know & it restores your faith in mankind. I can’t describe how it feels to read all these guestbook entries from all over the country and the world & know how much encouragement and faith it brings me. Thanks to everyone who is thinking & praying for my family during this time & remember God is in control of everything.

    Darin

If that does not have you headed towards a mailbox, perhaps this and these will.

Two years ago, I was with my church on a mission to Jamaica. We went to an orphanage called The Widow’s Mite. In that orphanage were children who were abandoned because they were severely, severely disabled. Nobody wanted them but the Widow’s Mite took them in.
As the other mission team members sang and doted on the children, I stood off by myself and wondered, how would I answer if someone asked me how the God I worship and loved could allow this to happen to a child. I really didnt know how to answer my own question until I met Miss Lucy. Miss Lucy was one of the caretakers of the children. In her wonderful Jamacia accent, she told me these children were God’s flower garden, and she was there to tend the flowers. These children are totally cared for, their every need is met, they are fed, clothed and above all, loved. They want for nothing. For many of them this is the only life they know, and to them maybe it isnt half bad.
So when somebody asks you how could God allow a child like Hannah to come down with cancer, the answer is she is one of God’s flowers, it is up to us to tend her, and what we do for her we do for Him also.
    God Bless and Merry Christmas.
