I see where you are coming from on Godfrey; less than a month after 9/11, it’s understandable.

However, I think all these cases speak to a larger issue of pre-judging, whether it’s because of a book with a bomb on the cover or the Klan on the cover.

As for Neil Godfrey, not that I condone anyone judging or being judged by a book they are reading, it was 29 days after 9/11 and he was carrying a book that had what was described as a bomb on the cover. Again, I don’t condone it, but I can understand it. The story I read regarding what happened to him seemed somewhat incomplete and one-sided. I think there was more to the story than just him having the book. That being said, it doesn’t compare to this story. This student was in no way compromising anyone’s security and safety. With Neil Godfrey, it wasn’t just offending someone who was illiterate, they had security concerns. Because of the differences of the two cases, I don’t think it’s a double standard at all.

I’m sorry, I actually mixed up two separate stories. A young man named Neil Godfrey was not allowed to board a plane in October 2001 because he was reading a best-selling novel, called “Hayduke Lives”.

In 2006, Professor Walter Murphy was not able to board a flight because he was on the terrorist watch list. He was on this list because he had given a lecture criticizing the Bush Administration’s infringement of constitutional rights to privacy.
