We have lost lots of jobs in Idaho too as well as revenue in the state coffers. Our Governor Butch Otter has actually decided to do something radical. Cut spending by the State’s government, but we live a state led by a conservative. The only stupid thing I’ve seen is the doubling of the cost of unemployment insurance by a State Commission, which will only guarantee small businesses will have to either cut staff or delay hiring new workers. Count me has happy to live in a state that has some concept of being somewhat fiscally responsible compared to so many liberally ruled states on our Western border.

So far, Strickland said, Ohio’s school money has largely been spared the budget knife, but if revenue projections are accurate, cuts will be required in the balanced budget that he must submit by Feb. 2

The Democrat reaction to an education budget crises will be to demand two years of mandatory pre-k because 13 years of government education has produces such stellar results that it is only natural to to want more. And they can produce studies that will show that it will actually lower the cost to society by producing more productive, well rounded citizens blah, blah, blah…

Yes, Ohio is hurting because our manufacturing base is drying up. A few years ago, Governor (now US Senator) George Voinivich (R) cried when someone asked him about some state funding issue, breaking down and saying they didn’t have the money to pay for it. At least he was a fiscal hawk. He was crying not for more money, but because he was bound to balance the budget, he knew he had to do it. Last week they closed the DMV closest to where I live. The horror!

“Rahm, it’s Ted. You’ve never failed me and I need $5 billion.”

Wow. He really said that. It doesn’t bode well for fiscal restraint that the troubled states are mostly if not all blue states and their Govs are generally Democrats. Do you think politics might play a role in this? Do you think?

As an Ohio resident I’m appalled at the pay and benefits of state employees. Jones-Kelly who was the apparent mastermind behind the snooping of Joe the Plumber was making about 150K. All managerial state employees at her level and below should be required to take 50% pay and benefit cuts immediately.

I’ve heard though am not sure that State Police get some kind of benefit like 75 or 90% of their pay for the rest of their lives. Who in the private sector gets that kind of benefit?!

Strickland, if he was doing his conscientious best (guffaw, guffaw), should revisit all state employee contracts and consider STEEP pay and benefit cuts.

Here is where I think it will get very ugly very fast. When folks who have mortgages, debt, etc., with any of these financial institutions that are receiving bail out funds who then in turn bust the chops of the “little” people for payments. If and when the injustice of these huge companies getting a pass who then in turn do not extend grace to folks who are in debt to those very same companies becomes clear, the regular folks are not going to take it sitting down. This is not a new problem by the way. If or when I dare say it becomes obvious these companies are taking bail out money and hording it instead of giving us, the source of that bail out money, a break it will get ugly and very ugly very fast.

    Matt 18:23-34
23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.
25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 “The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’
27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’
30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.
31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.
33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’
34 In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

Most states and municipalities are required to have a zero based budget–no short fall–no profit. Two years ago AZ had a huge surplus they hurried to spend, as required, on all kinds of fun, but unnecessary things. This year we are 2 billion behind and we are a “red” state. The real problem is illegal immigration and its resulting expense to the general public. The top ten states in the deepest holes financially are states where illegal immigration is the highest–just a conincidence–NOT!! Other states that are in trouble–Democrap gov’s and all the benefits that go with them.

Just wait until the seven dwarfs (Obama, Reid, Pelousi, Frank, Dodd Biden and Emanuel) are running the country with their 3 TRILLION plan to fix everything–with no clear plan on where the money is coming from.

For years Arizona had what is commonly called a “Rain Day Fund” -Arizona’s Emergency Economic Relief Funds. Just what the legal authority was I do not know but several times is was big enough to allow for TAX CUTS. In several of our uglier recessions it got quite low, per it’s reason for being, but it was there to prevent a shortfall.

Up jumps J-No, aka Governor Janet Napolitano, and surprise, surprise the Rainy Day is used for Kindergartens, fun projects of all kinds and that biggest Gravy Boat of all: ROADS NOT DRIVEN , Senate Bill 1049. Sad to say several of our big name Republicans joined with the minority other party to pass that one. Of course they would not be so crass as to call it a Gravy Boat so they invented the term Statewide Transportation Acceleration Need.

Ok denver republican after you bail out Ohio Arizona needs you. We need more ROADS NOT DRIVEN, Gravy Boat, what ever, we need it.

Good grief, you don’t expect US to pay for it?

To all you liberal freeloaders out there. Better get your bailout while $5B is still $5B. The money supply as we know it is running out. When it does, they’ll have to print more. Then they’ll devalue. So you won’t need $5B anymore, you’ll need $50B to take care of what $5B used to cover.

At first glance I thought Ted in the title was referring to Kennedy. That bit of humor unfortunately avoided, what the hell is a state doing asking for bailouts?

    Oh, wait.

In the 2007 budget year, Medicaid costs devoured 24.2 percent of the state’s general fund, or $4.3 billion. Four years earlier, the figures were 20.5 percent and $3.7 billion.

    *snip*

First, he is angling for a $250 billion increase in federal payments for food stamps and Medicaid, the government health program for impoverished Americans and, increasingly, the working poor. Second, he favors a $250 billion national investment in infrastructure projects. Ohio has a list of “shovel-ready” projects, including roads, water and sewer improvements and “green economy” investments.

Third, in search of a palatable pitch to a Congress and nation numbed by the parade of rescue packages, Strickland is teaming with a handful of other Democratic governors to seek a $250 billion infusion for education. The group includes Jennifer M. Granholm (Mich.), Jon S. Corzine (N.J.), David A. Paterson (N.Y.), Jim Doyle (Wis.) and Deval L. Patrick (Mass.).

    But earlier:

“We’re not crying wolf. This is real,” Strickland said in an interview in his statehouse office, pointing to charts that project the most serious erosion of state income in 40 years and a two-year budget deficit of $7.3 billion. Revenue shortfalls in the upcoming two-year budget could amount to about 25 percent of the state’s discretionary spending.

    Drunken sailor much, Strickland?

Hmmm, I think I am beginning to see a pattern. The top 4 liberal populace states (unsure of Ohio, but I assume very liberla too) need a bailout. And the top 2 are heavy illegal immigrant destination states. How about you stop providing entitlements to every able bodied person (and to all illegals), stop funding every liberal program, and reduce your overall spending? What a concept. That is the way every individual and business must handle tough times. But they would rather the rest of us pay fo rtheir ridiculous unaffordable giveaway programs.
