Tale of two presidential workout fanatics

Chris Matthews won the Media Research Center’s quote of the year with his Obamedia-topping Leg O’ Thrill and Tingle remark. But Matthews only took first honors because Washington Post reporter Eli Saslow waited until Christmas to file his tribute to Obama’s sun-kissed pectorals. Have they no shame? No, they do not.
The gushing reminded me of a blog post I did three years ago on how Bush-deranged journalist Jonathan Chait reacted to President Bush’s workout regimen. It’s the subject of my syndicated column today. More liberal double standards: It’s just how they roll.

Tale of two presidential workout fanatics

Ah, the perks of media affection. On Christmas Day, the Washington Post delivered a front-page paean to Barack Obama’s workout habits. The 1,233-word ode to O’s physical fitness read more like a Harlequin romance novel than an A-1 news article.
Sighed smitten reporter Eli Zaslow: “The sun glinted off chiseled pectorals sculpted during four weightlifting sessions each week, and a body toned by regular treadmill runs and basketball games.” Drool cup to the newsroom, stat.
Zaslow imparted us with vital information about buff Bam’s regimen: “Obama has gone to the gym for about 90 minutes a day, for at least 48 days in a row.” The Washington Post enlightened us with more gushing commentary from Obama friends and associates who explain how, as the subtitle of Zaslow’s opus put it, “Gym Workouts Help Obama Carry the Weight of His Position.”
For adoring journalists, you see, Obama’s workout fanaticism demonstrates his discipline and balance in his life. Apparently, what’s good for Obama’s glistening pecs is good for the country. Zaslow quoted Obama Chicago crony Marty Nesbitt, who offered this diagnosis: “He doesn’t think of it as something he has to do — it’s his time for himself, a chance for him to reflect. It’s his break. He feels better and more revved up after he gets in his workout.”
And when Obama feels better, the skies will part, the sun will shine (in moderate, environmentally-correct, non-global warming-inducing amounts, of course) and peace will reign worldwide!
Too bad the doughy, McDonald’s-chomping, coffee-guzzling members of the White House press corps couldn’t see the merits of White House exercise over the past eight years. After giggling about his out-of-shape colleagues in the media, Zaslow mentioned in passing that President George W. Bush shares Obama’s commitment to health. What he failed to acknowledge is that the same reporters who so greatly admire Obama’s lithe figure derided Bush for his training schedule.
Former Washington Post writer Jonathan Chait famously attacked Bush three years ago in an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times headlined, “The (over)exercise of power.” Recounting how President Bush ran 3 1/2 miles a day and preached more cross-training to a federal judge, Chait fumed: “Am I the only person who finds this disturbing?…What I mean is the fact that Bush has an obsession with exercise that borders on the creepy.”
Chait argued that Bush’s passionate devotion to exercise was a dereliction of duty. “Does the leader of the free world need to attain that level of physical achievement?” he jeered. “It’s nice for Bush that he can take an hour or two out of every day to run, bike or pump iron. Unfortunately, most of us have more demanding jobs than he does.”
Can you imagine any member of the Obamedia mocking the incoming gym rat-in-chief this way?
Chait was not alone. Reuters journalist Caron Bohan weaved the same unhinged themes into a piece on Bush’s two-hour, 17-mile bike ride with cycling champ Lance Armstrong in Crawford, Texas in 2005. After noting his six-day-a-week workout schedule, Bohan steered the piece into an anti-war screed:
“Bush says exercise helps sharpen his thinking. But some of his critics view his exercise obsession as an indulgence that takes time away from other priorities. Among them is Cindy Sheehan, the Vacaville, California, mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, who until late last week was camped out down the road from Bush’s ranch seeking a meeting with him to discuss her opposition to the war. Sheehan, who left her vigil on Thursday to tend to her sick mother, has said she believes Bush should take fewer bike rides to have more time to focus on the “the nation’s work.”
Fit Republican president = Selfish, indulgent, creepy fascist.
Fit Democratic president = Disciplined, health-conscious Adonis role model.
The good news: In just a few short weeks, W. will be able to exercise in peace, free from the disapproving glares of journalists now rushing to mop the sweat — er, the glisten — from Barack Obama’s hallowed brow.

LOL…whatever will eaglehasblundered do when school break is over and he has to report back to 7th grade home room?
Among many other ignorant things,
If the auto companies made a profit they could afford to keep more of the union employees you love so much. Maybe even hire more.
So, please, genius, explain to all of us know-nothings here, how profits are selfish and evil, and union jobs are what this country needs, but lower profits mean less union jobs, and you can’t have as many union jobs without profits.
We’re waiting …
Oh, and I mean PRIVATE SECTOR union jobs, not government jobs, union or otherwise. Government jobs (other than the few relating to the military and public safety produce very little value to the citizenry. Most of them are make-work that will end up running this country into the ground.
Last thought for this go around. Only an idiot would include profit and exploitation of others in the same sentence as though they were synonymous. They aren’t equivalent in any way, shape or form. Profits in and of themselves exploit nobody. They are what provide the citizenry as a whole an enhanced standard of living. Exploitation of others comes in the form of a government that demands exhorbitant taxes from producers and hands the money to non-producers with no obligations that the takers contribute or pay back.
The problem with liberals is that they view the world as a zero sum game. If someone makes a profit, then automatically someone else has to take a loss. Nonsense! The economic marketplace doesn’t work like that. If I make a million dollars, that does absolutely nothing to diminish your chances to do the same provided you’re willing to work for it.
Work for it? Ooops, for a minute there I forgot I was addressing a liberal. How foolish of me!
At least he got his signature correct.
I have been nauseous all weekend. Reading what they wrote about Obama’s pecs makes me want to hurl and be done with it.
Obama is so far over his head you would need a submarine to retrieve him.
All the PR is not going to help him three weeks from now.
heh-heh…
Would +/- 50 points be an “off day” as well?
Ok, ok – 50 points…?
Reminds me of the video of Obama on the plane, raising a leg up on a seat while he talks on his cell phone, and the female “journalists” are all yelling for someone to sit down so they can see. I guess the “foxes” thought they’d get a glimpse of his “bulges” as he “cruised successfully in tight slacks” (sorry SNL). I was hoping it would turn into a Tom Jones concert scene where they started throwing their panties at him.
Well Slap My Ass, And Call Me Eli!
Holy Cow! All this time I thought Eli was a dude. Now this has become very….troubling.
Well Slap My Ass, And Call Me Eli!
All this time I thought Eli was a
dudechick. See, I’m still confused.I take it, he must have access to the team locker room?
Sorry to change the subject, but I wonder which President is going to submit to this unconstitutional action. It shows the hypocrisy of our “instant gratification” society. “I want it and I want it now!” I belong to the CWPT and “Gettysburg Friends”. Maybe we can get the NPS to seize land rather than just raising money to buy it. Nah, battles where hundreds died are out; plane crashes are in. The landowner better take whatever he can get; otherwise, he’ll get nothing. Between wetlands, shopping malls, and office buildings, no land is safe, these days, in our new police state.

I must really be getting old. I see absolutely nothing appealing about Obummer’s physique. And I am sick of looking at it everywhere. Cover it up! Please!
As someone who has been accused of being a liberal troll on this site before, I hate to say this, but you all should ignore Eaglehaslanded for the rest of this thread.
People like Chap or some others will come here and look to actually engage in a discussion on the issues–this guy eagle seems to be here to get a cheap rise out of people and call names. Don’t but into it, and don’t let one person mess up the (sometimes) good dialogues that can happen here.
I dare to compare Obama’s “homey walk” to Bush’s “swagger” and find that in Bermuda shorts, Obama is both bowlegged and pigeon toed.
Let’s hear more about that smoking (cigarettes) too. Really healthy.
It is a wonder that the press can pull their lips from Obama’s butt long enough to write this smarmy, adoring screed.
Eaglehaslanded offers no substantive evidence to the contrary for Michelle’s observations.
Even though he/she hangs out with “the smart people.”
The first entry doesn’t even make logical sense (except to Eagle).
How about putting your money where your mouth is, and prove Michelle wrong.
If you can. Better, if you dare.
Eagle’s original post, #12, pretty much blows MM’s argument out of the water. That’s probably why it rubbed so many people the wrong way. That and the insults that don’t help Eagle’s arguments.
Another difference between Bush and Obama workouts is this: For Obama, workouts are something he does on the side. For Bush, they are his whole day. Bush never showed much interest in governing, but he loved his mountain bike.
For the Obama suck up watch, it would be hard to top Harry Smith of CBS morning Show. Last week, he did a whole five minute segment called “How cool is Obama” and Smith gushed over Obama listening to JayZ. After the election, Smith had Maya Angelou on and Ms. Angelou said that everybody “rises” from Barack’s win. Smith started chanting “And I rise. And I rise”. It was the funniest thing to watch: A guy in his late 60s trying to sound hip and cool. Nobody watches CBS morning news, but Smith is a hoot!
Interesting-I had thought CBS was history-thanks for the update.
Rude, crude and thoroughly enjoyable.
Thanks!
Morning lgm; don’t you have a protest march to attend? Somewhere in the north Gaza? North Dakota?
Wow, eagle had a typical lefty meltdown. Some lefties I know pull the same rant to make a point. They just don’t get conservatives at all and want to make them all bible thumping morons. Not all conservatives are the same; some are religious, some are not. There are social conservatives and fiscal conservatives. Holding on to the values which made this country great doesn’t mean that conservatives hate anyone. I see the hate coming from the left because they are not winning the argument for the social change that they want.
The most disturbing thing about this whole way of reporting is it highlights the sorrowful state of journalism in the U.S. It is propaganda on the level not seen since Hitlers Third Reich and Joseph Goebbels(?). It’s all according to which party the reporter is from. What would be wrong with just reporting the facts? This is the reason we have Blagojovich in Illinois and incompetents in Congress.
LGM–
It really doesn’t blow anything out of the water. MM didn’t purport to show a scientific survey of individual media attitudes towards Bush and Obama–she drew attention to differential treatment by the media as a group. To that end, it doesn’t matter that it’s not the same columnist in both articles. Her point is to show two articles, from major media outlets, treating a similar subject (political figure exercising a lot) in opposite ways. This she did very well.
Are we going to have news alerts for every time Obama flexes a bicep, or passes gas – enough, it is time for the empty suit to start dealing with reality.
This double standard is just blatant and appalling. Moreover, I don’t think Presidents should be photographed for public view either in shorts or shirtless. There’s something undignified about it and undermining to a public perception of strength. Rather like how it has long been thought best for young children not to see their parents in the nude. Also Bush said he would not play golf while the country is at war. Doesn’t seem to stop Adonis.
I agree. Can’t think of a single time I saw GW shirtless. Maybe he has been, but I have never seen it. Anyway, you’re right…it is undignified and demeans the office to have women drooling over the President like he is some rock star. How can you take someone like that seriously? And he flaunts it! Bubba did the same thing, but he didn’t have a body to flaunt. So he just dropped his pants and went for it.
vargas (#110)
MM creates the impression of a double standard by selecting quotes that are not representative. The liberal press did not condemn the Bush workout regimen, though some complained. The liberal press has not swelled with pride at the Obama pecks, though some have mentioned them.
Not everyone writing for the non-conservative press is a liberal. Liberal blogosphere is pretty unhappy with the Washington Post.
Guys -
Remember the tidbit Michelle O imparted to newshounds about a morning routine in their house that ended? The kids stopped jumping into bed with the couple because the youngsters complained that Barry stinks. Does he smoke in bed, too? Ugh!
Thanks, happyscraper.
No, we never saw
GW shirtless. I don’t remember them taking any vacations other than Camp David and home in Texas. Maybe they did.
Two points on that: no blatant frolicking in lush, tropical locales while the country is at war and no inappropriate photo ops.
Barbara raised him right.
I might have heard Adonis complained about the press getting the pecs photo.
Well, if you don’t give them the opportunity, it won’t happen, Dumbo!
On December 28th, 2008 at 11:42 am, Tuesday said:
Guys -
Actually the WORST part of that story is the fact at the First Lady To Be (God help us), would make such trashy comments about her husband. I never remember EVER hearing any other First Lady commenting on their husband’s body odors or complaining about petty personal habits. She has also reported that the girls will be expected to pooper-scoop after the puppy they are supposed to get. Well, maybe they will as a way to teach them responsbilbity but she shouldn’t be reporting that to the public. Barbara Bush wouldn’t condone it.
Right again. In the interest of being “one of the folks”, they are giving out way too much personal information. Again this loses dignity. If only the Obamas were as open about Barack’s past! That would be a nice change I could believe in.
LGM:
The quotes MM selected are quite representative of their respective articles. I don’t think her point is that everyone in the national press is saying one thing about Obama and another about Bush–you’d be hard pressed to find any issue where every single media type is in agreement. The point is that some writers for major media outlets were able to publish articles criticizing Bush for his committment to fitness, while now seemingly all major articles about Obama’s fitness are praising him in rapturous tones.
Regardless of political affiliation, I think one should be able to say that the Chait piece is absolutely absurd, and likewise, one should be able to admit that it is highly, highly unlikely such a piece would ever be approved by an editor about Obama.
I guess there’s a fine line between appealing to “the folks” and losing dignity. Princess Diana seemed to succeed at balancing her desire for her boys to have experiences of normal life with maintaining royal dignity.
So far Michelle isn’t displaying much if any sense about how to balance in a similar way.
First, yes, there is a definite liberal media bias and lgm and their ilk will never see it- too blind in their own brilliance.
Second however is a true conundrum. I personally, and believe many are like minded based on Palin’s mass appeal, would like to see a Republican candidate who is young(er) and more energized. The young voters will have a hard time identifying with the likes of John McCain or Fred Thompson, who had the vitality of a 20 year old Basset Hound during the primaries. And yet we recognize the experience factor being very important. Mitt Romney seemed to have both but suffered a lack of support from the Christian majority, in spite, or as a consequence, of their self-righteousness. And so we have the O (as in Zero). Time for a critical look within before the next election or else we suffer the same defeat.
Kudos to you for using your fitness for a cause greater than yourself.
I was a member of a gym for awhile that emphasized body building. I had one of the trainers explain to me how to use the stair trainers. She mentioned that some firefighters came there with their 50 pound equipment on their backs to train on these steps. That almost brought a tear to my eye. And what a comparison to vanity.
Spoken by somebody who doesn’t know how to critically think, disseminate, or analyze news and how it’s reported.
What the hell does this even mean? There are plenty of hard-working conservatives (college-educated and not) who do their jobs, take care of their families and donate their time (money and resources) to their communities. You are way off base.
You really do epitomize ignorance. Never underestimate the power of stereotypes perpetrated by the likes of Air America and other liberal media “experts.” What is so wrong with supporting the military? What is so wrong with having spirituality in one’s life? As someone who both has a husband in the military and isn’t particularly religious, you really do love to group people you so profess to understand into one category, don’t you? BTW, what good are unions if they just collect dues but don’t ever represent their members? This happened to my own father which lead me to conclude that unions are only as good as what they profess to “protect.”
I may be a smart, college-educated conserverative but I wasn’t born yesterday like you were. I grew up in the state of NY where if it moves, tax it. There are people, like small farmers, losing everything because they can’t pay their property taxes. What useful purpose does “sharing the wealth” possibly have when it just pushes people into ruin?
There will always be winners and losers. Professional sports teams have declared it so as has real life. I’ve been a teacher and tried to improve the lives of all my students but even I know that not all of them will be going to Harvard (or any college). Not all of my students wanted to learn (or work for that matter). That’s how personal initiative works… something it would seem you are in short supply of yourself.
You have much to learn before you can teach anybody. When you repeat blatant stereotypes that are liberal, scaremonger retreads instead of actually understanding who you have any kind of discourse with, you’ll never understand. You are no rugged individualist or original. Just another drone, as Mark Levin would say.
We of the the selfish, evil minority bow before your eloquence Eagle. We are not worthy of your presence. Why don’t you leave? Take lgm with you.
Eagle=Liberal? That does not sound quite right.
Carrion Crow? That is better.
CarrionCrowHasLanded,
BuzzardHasLanded works.
Not to worry. The Clinton III Sock Puppet will implode much sooner than BJ Clinton did albeit with disastrous consequences for the country. So funny how perfectly Clintonista this admin will be, and how ironic and hypocritical that the Left criticized GW Bush for employing his dad’s former employees. Par for the course I guess. A benefit during this time is that the most obnoxious of the Left will remain silent during this time so as to cover for the Littlest Doofus of the Marxist elite. I also wonder how the Uber Leftist Rahm Emmanuel is parsing the current Israeli hammering of the Islamos.
Don’t get all excited about looks. Have a gander at Caroline Kennedy. She was such a cute little kid…now…. not so much.
lgm’s support of Eagle started out interesting, then slid right down to the “Bush is dumb” proposition, again. That Bush’s workout takes his “whole day” is laughable on its face. That wasn’t even worth the time it took to read.
lgm is never interesting.
Ignorant, yes. Interesting, no.
lgm is a one-note Johnny, just like Eagle — Liberal / Dem = good; Conservative / Rep = evil. One-notes are never interesting.
I pity his students. If his thought process in teaching mathematics is as fuzzy as it is in the comments he makes on this site, it would be a miracle if he could teach anyone simple addition, let alone something resembling college level mathematics.
After all, in addition, 2+2 always has to = 4 and, well, lgm-type “logic” just doesn’t add up.
lgm thinks like Frankenstein’s monster:
Conservative-Baaad… Liberal-Gooood.
Hypocrisy, thy name is Liberal.
Personally, the only thing creepy is the homo-erotic reporting done by the media.
The fact that they still maintain that there is not a Liberal bias, or that they did not do everything in their power to undermine President Bush or install Obama and people believe them makes me wretch.
Actually when you consider the Democrats they have been made to look at in the past while wearing their swimsuits, it’s no wonder that they are all a twitter about Cpt. Big Ears.
Still…gross.
It’s not his brow they want the sweat from.
Far as I’m concerned, if Obama wants to go to the gym, fine. I admire his discipline because I dont have it. But, WHY is it news?
I would like to see some pictures of him puffing his cancer sticks though. In liberal-land, smoking is the unpardonable and unforgivable sin.
Wow, after reading some of eagle’s excerpts, it makes me wonder – is he or she somewhere around 13 or 14 in age? He/she writes and apparently thinks at that age level.
One tip, eagle – when you resort to personal attacks and name calling instead of facts, you have lost the debate. You’ve surely lost this one. Your mama’s callin’ ya – go see what she wants.
This is the last acknowledgment I’ll make to eagle or his/her ignorance.
Only slightly OT:
The History Channel, cashing in on the new Scientologist in an eye-patch movie, showed a documentary last night on the July 20th “Valkyrie” plot. After the plot failed, the Nazis had show trials, which were taped. One of the defendants, when asked for motivation, said “we had to stop the murders”, and the judge, who sounded just like every Nazi stereotype one can imagine, went ballistic on him. A couple of things, at least some of the plotters were telling the truth about not being comfortable with extermination camps, and the whole idea of show trials in a one party state.
The more whacked Dems in the House will eagerly seek to please their MoveOn.org/George Soros supporters, and will have Congressional hearings on the supposed war crimes and civil rights abuses of the Bush Administration. I expect Harriet Miers, Alberto Gonzales, Rummy, Libby, probably even Rove, Bush and Cheney to be subpoena’d for a few days of lectures, harangues, and questions.
They will likely challenge the subpoenas on the basis of Executive Priviledge.
Here is the test on whether the GOP is just having a bad two or eight years, or we are likely living in a permanent one party state with ever decreasing civil liberties.
Will the Obama Administration remain neutral when the issue of Executive Priviledge goes to the courts, or even weigh in in favor of forcing the Bushies to speak, or will the Obamites seek to defend Executive Priviledge.
If Obama and company are not worried about ever having a potential future GOP House or Senate using the precedent set here and questioning them under oath, it implies that either through extensive voting fraud made possible by granting the ACORN wish list, plus enfranchising the illegal aliens, criminals and others, or some other means, Obama anticipates the Democrat Party will have permanent and complete control of government.
At any rate, by mid-summer, we’ll know if we are living in the early stages of a new Stalinist Russia or mid 1930s Germany.
There will be a push for investigations and trials for bush and chenney, you watch. Exercise in peace? not likely.
So you have access to GWB’s dayplanner to support this fact.
It must be wonderful to be such an insider that you would know all of this. I admire you.
/sarc off
I think eaglehaslanded is far more entertaining than lgm. Nothing funnier than a pissed off liberal.
Why doesn’t the mainstream media just get it over already, and register as a paid lobbying organization for the democrat party?
Dave Barry gets it about right:
RRRAALLLPPHHH!!! Are you sure this guy wasn’t writing for the SF Chronicle?
Beneath all that “chiseled” exterior lie the lungs of a lifetime smoker. Typical Dem … phony on the outside with the smelly, diseased truth lurking on the inside.
Don’t forget the perforated septum of a coke user. And while I don’t know if there is any proof, why don’t we throw in the collapsed veins of a smack junkie.
No indication Barry O’s cocaine use was more than just youthful experimentation. Probably wasn’t enough to cause septum damage.
The cigarettes, however, can’t be doing him any good.
Michelle, please take down that pic of Obummer’s glistening boobies. Blech. It seems as if it has been there For Ever! Surely there is something more appetizing to put on your front page.
Ehh…never stopped anyone else around here…
Personally, I think a regular workout regimen is a sign of overall focus and self-discipline; it’s something I aspire to myself. What gets me is that when Dubya did it, he was wasting time that could have been spent on more important things. Obama does it, he’s THE MAN.
Arguing with a raging liberal troll is useless. They have short attention spans, and as a result, no patience for logic and reason. They are lazy, with no desire to learn from history. Instead, they cling to slogans and catchy one-liners (hope-and-change). So, when confronted with a logical argument, the only way they know how to reply is with insults and name-calling. The insults and name-calling gets laughs and cheers from their equally clueless peers, which only encourages more of the same. That’s the way it works.
They’ve been duped into having heroes like Castro, Che, and now Obama, because these “revolutionaries” look cool on a t-shirt. They know nothing of the brutality and oppression the Cuban people have endured at the hands of Castro, or the murderous animal that was Che – nor do they care to learn. Castro was seen early on by the Cuban people as a “messiah” – one who was going to bring everyone equal wealth. Instead, what they got was equal poverty, and a depth of oppression they never thought possible. But modern liberals would never take the time to understand why so many people would risk their lives to flee their home countries in little more than inner tubes.
A people’s “messiah” came to power in Germany in the 1930’s also. He was going to make Germany the most powerful nation in the world for the next thousand years. Similarly, he used slogans, colorful banners, and other things that, at the time were thought to be pretty cool. The people were taken in by it all, and those who saw through it were at first ridiculed and called names. Later they were hunted down.
So now they have their own “messiah”, who looks cool and says cool stuff. He’s going to pay off our debts and make us all equally wealthy. He’s going to make it so the rest of the world “likes” us. He’s got a lot of cool slogans, his own logo with pretty colors, and a huge following that will enable him to carry out his agenda. For the rest of us, the name-calling and ridicule is already happening – the rest will come soon enough.
People always believe that radical change is the answer to all their problems. Yet, it is radical change that has brought about some of the worst times in history.
Many times I want to hate liberals, but I force myself to understand that they are of a mindset that won’t allow them to see logic and truth. They surround themselves with others who think the same way as them, so to them it’s normal. Being a liberal is easy. You just have to grab on to the latest fad (global warming, Che shirts), and repeat what the movie stars are saying – what could be cooler? It’s logic and free-thinking that is difficult, and that’s why liberals are inherently lazy.
GWB was a mediocre president, at best. But constant bashing and name calling doesn’t drive that point home. It just makes those bashing him look petty and stupid. Unfortunately, we’re going to see this, and the cult-like worship of Obama for a while, at least until the people open their eyes to reality. My only hope is that one day those who have blindly made Obama into this “messiah” figure will see and regret what they’ve done.
The media is really into that cosmopolitan, metrosexual androgynous look, e. g., pencil-necked one-worlder. My big, broad blue-collar husband could break him across his knee with the proverbial one hand tied behind his back. “W” probably could as well.
