Tale of two presidential workout fanatics
Chris Matthews won the Media Research Center’s quote of the year with his Obamedia-topping Leg O’ Thrill and Tingle remark. But Matthews only took first honors because Washington Post reporter Eli Saslow waited until Christmas to file his tribute to Obama’s sun-kissed pectorals. Have they no shame? No, they do not.
The gushing reminded me of a blog post I did three years ago on how Bush-deranged journalist Jonathan Chait reacted to President Bush’s workout regimen. It’s the subject of my syndicated column today. More liberal double standards: It’s just how they roll.

Ah, the perks of media affection. On Christmas Day, the Washington Post delivered a front-page paean to Barack Obama’s workout habits. The 1,233-word ode to O’s physical fitness read more like a Harlequin romance novel than an A-1 news article.
Sighed smitten reporter Eli Zaslow: “The sun glinted off chiseled pectorals sculpted during four weightlifting sessions each week, and a body toned by regular treadmill runs and basketball games.” Drool cup to the newsroom, stat.
Zaslow imparted us with vital information about buff Bam’s regimen: “Obama has gone to the gym for about 90 minutes a day, for at least 48 days in a row.” The Washington Post enlightened us with more gushing commentary from Obama friends and associates who explain how, as the subtitle of Zaslow’s opus put it, “Gym Workouts Help Obama Carry the Weight of His Position.”
For adoring journalists, you see, Obama’s workout fanaticism demonstrates his discipline and balance in his life. Apparently, what’s good for Obama’s glistening pecs is good for the country. Zaslow quoted Obama Chicago crony Marty Nesbitt, who offered this diagnosis: “He doesn’t think of it as something he has to do — it’s his time for himself, a chance for him to reflect. It’s his break. He feels better and more revved up after he gets in his workout.”
And when Obama feels better, the skies will part, the sun will shine (in moderate, environmentally-correct, non-global warming-inducing amounts, of course) and peace will reign worldwide!
Too bad the doughy, McDonald’s-chomping, coffee-guzzling members of the White House press corps couldn’t see the merits of White House exercise over the past eight years. After giggling about his out-of-shape colleagues in the media, Zaslow mentioned in passing that President George W. Bush shares Obama’s commitment to health. What he failed to acknowledge is that the same reporters who so greatly admire Obama’s lithe figure derided Bush for his training schedule.
Former Washington Post writer Jonathan Chait famously attacked Bush three years ago in an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times headlined, “The (over)exercise of power.” Recounting how President Bush ran 3 1/2 miles a day and preached more cross-training to a federal judge, Chait fumed: “Am I the only person who finds this disturbing?…What I mean is the fact that Bush has an obsession with exercise that borders on the creepy.”
Chait argued that Bush’s passionate devotion to exercise was a dereliction of duty. “Does the leader of the free world need to attain that level of physical achievement?” he jeered. “It’s nice for Bush that he can take an hour or two out of every day to run, bike or pump iron. Unfortunately, most of us have more demanding jobs than he does.”
Can you imagine any member of the Obamedia mocking the incoming gym rat-in-chief this way?
Chait was not alone. Reuters journalist Caron Bohan weaved the same unhinged themes into a piece on Bush’s two-hour, 17-mile bike ride with cycling champ Lance Armstrong in Crawford, Texas in 2005. After noting his six-day-a-week workout schedule, Bohan steered the piece into an anti-war screed:
“Bush says exercise helps sharpen his thinking. But some of his critics view his exercise obsession as an indulgence that takes time away from other priorities. Among them is Cindy Sheehan, the Vacaville, California, mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, who until late last week was camped out down the road from Bush’s ranch seeking a meeting with him to discuss her opposition to the war. Sheehan, who left her vigil on Thursday to tend to her sick mother, has said she believes Bush should take fewer bike rides to have more time to focus on the “the nation’s work.”
Fit Republican president = Selfish, indulgent, creepy fascist.
Fit Democratic president = Disciplined, health-conscious Adonis role model.
The good news: In just a few short weeks, W. will be able to exercise in peace, free from the disapproving glares of journalists now rushing to mop the sweat — er, the glisten — from Barack Obama’s hallowed brow.

And when Obama reaches the age President Bush is today, I am quite certain his health will be much much worse.
Anger, jealousy and greed do much to decrease one’s well-being.
This is really no surprise…fully what I expect from the slobbering MSM. I’ve had to “gird my loins” for the upcoming years of listening/reading this kind of tripe from the likes of the NYT, et al.
I’ve actually decided that my New Year’s Resolution will be to harangue the advertisers rather than the outlet of such “news” and make it clear that I consider their advertising in these rags to be a tip that they must agree with what’s within the pages.
The double standard is truly shocking.
But you see, Michelle, the msm have very, very short memories. Or they pick and choose what they want to remember. The msm’s gushing at anything Obama is similar to new parents gushing at everything a baby does. Wait until they see the trail of diapers they have to use, the mess they have to clean. The Obamas are lead actors for this new soap opera, “As the Turd Turns”! Yuck!
The time spent in the thorough analysis of every drop of perspiration Obama sheds in his workout would have been more useful had that reporter used it to check on Obama’s background when he was running for office! The ink in printing the gushing words would have served the public well in reporting the truth about Barry Hussein Obama, who until only very recently did not want his middle name used.

There are so many more examples. The other hackneyed media retort in response to the O’s almost congenital lack of substance when answering questions… He’s so pragmatic, and very cautious… like those are good qualities for a President!

Thanks Michelle for another great piece demonstrating the decline of the once trusted MSM. The double standard they show for the same behavior for the messiah and the current POTUS turns more and more of us to the new media.
Working out has been the one constant in my life being a self proclaimed endorphin junkie since my days in Junior High School running cross-country and track. The self discipline it takes to make the commitment to a healthier active life style has served me well during my military career and as a simple servant for the USAF today. Too bad the MSM is too busy injecting their liberal agenda deriding the current POTUS for his healthy lifestyle while going orgasmic for the media darling they have created in their liberal unbalanced minds. It is going to be a very long 4 years.

When one develops such a lovelorn crush on who they’re covering, a responsible editor should probably put them on a new subject.
The pro-workout and anti-workout pieces were written by different writers, correct? So you’re complaining about the media offering two different views? You’re lumping these media sources together and ASSUMING that they would all be anti-Bush working out and pro-Obama working out, even though there is no evidence to support this.

I compare the Federal Budget to the then used Gross National Product/Gross National Spending and could not find a 7 to 1 ratio.

This column is just another example of MM’s jealousy of Real Media, where she couldn’t hack it. Instead she’s been marginalized to writing for niche (i.e. wackjob) audiences while real writers with real brains work for real media. I tell yah this praise for Obama is out of hand, the American people, with the urging of the press is hurteling into dangerous grounds. It is not necessary to have the same writer …. Why would that be a requirement in the case that MM has cited? That is simply an arbitrary requirement you have imposed to confuse the issue.
MM was talking about the hypocrisy of the liberal media as a group in writing that BO’s workout habits are praiseworthy while GWB’s are not. That BO’s workout habits will aid him in the handling of his job responsibilities as POTUS while GWB’s detract from his handling of this job responsibilities as POTUS.
Two opposite points of view on the same act (working out) from the same group (liberal media): one expressed as positive (for the “D”); one expressed as negative (for the “R”).
That was the point of the post and your idiotic assertion that the same writer must make the same criticism misses the point completely.
But that’s the liberal way — when you’re talking out of your a$$, insert as much obfuscation as possible.
Actually, I know this is difficult for such a pea-brained liberal such as yourself to understand, Eagle, BUT I am going to try to explain it to you in LITTLE WORDS so you might at least think for a moment before you type:
MM was showing the bias of the media as a WHOLE, not just ONE or TWO writers.
These pieces are part of the puzzle – there are many such pieces if you were to be intellectually honest (difficult with your obvious adoration of The One, I know).
Just look around: ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CBS (witness their ad for the People’s Choice awards with Queen Latifa – “Can We Pick Winners? Yes, We Can.”) What the HELL do they think they were doing PICKING when they should have only been REPORTING?!?!? Can you HONESTLY saw these people are really reporting the NEWS!?!?!
The correct answer, Eagle, is “NO”.
The “reporters” are glorified mouth-pieces for puppetmasters that we know not – even now. Did you know who Rahm Emmanuel was BEFORE Obambi tapped him? I’m fairly certain that the answer to that is also a resounding “NO”.

Actually I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about what liberal kool-aid drinkers like eagle think … they don’t do it very often … which is why the kool-aid is so effective …
Remember … No matter what happens there is always one more imbecile than you counted on … which only proves the theory that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity …
Calling us Jesus freaks and knuckle draggers is a really effective debating tool and makes me want to debate with Eagle even more! It’s ironic that you put scare quotes around journalists and then go on to mention O’Reilly, Hannity, and Limbaugh. None of them are or claim to be journalists. They are commentators. That is, they comment on the news of the day; they do not claim nor do they REPORT the news. Kristol is both a journalist (as a magazine editor) and a commentator (on TV and at the NYT).
So while Hannity and Limbaugh are biased (because they admit they are), they are never hypocritical (because they admit their bias upfront).
Hypocrisy is reserved for the liberal media, which claims impartiality in REPORTING (not commenting on) the news. You’ll find those people at places like the NYT, WaPo, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Fox, Time and Newsweek, not on Limbaugh’s, Hannity’s or an Air America program.
Before you criticize a journalist like MM (she was a reporter before she was a commentator), maybe you should become educated on the actual definition of journalist.
It should be noted that there are actually a few liberals who are respectful of other people’s opinions and make intelligent and interesting arguments. We may not agree, but we have vigorous debate and keep it civil. It really is possible. Chap is a person who comes to mind on these posts. But there are others too. It is just a shame that a lot of liberals think they will make their point by being rude and using “put downs”. That never works, but they keep doing it anyway. Another sign of mental illness.
I expect the MSM to show pictures of Obama smoking as often as they showed FDR sitting in a wheelchair.
Watch for lung cancer research to be the highest priority in the new DHHS.

There is no such thing as a “librul media”. There is reality, which, again, has a known liberal slant. Media reporting on reality is labeled “librul” by idiots.
If you are that smart, and are still a conservative, then you’re in the minority – the selfish, evil minority.
Conservatives are usually just ignorant (Jeeeeus freaks, mindless flyover-state flag flyin’ military worshippin’) folks have been fooled into not acting in their own self interest (for example, hating Unions even though strong Unions would improve their standard of living). They hate gays because their pastor or their ignorant parents taught them to.
The “smart” minority of Conservatives – are the ones who should know better but are greedy and selfish and don’t care that they are put on this Earth to improve the lives of others, and not themselves. They refuse to share, hollering MINE MINE MINE like a stupid selfish child. They oppose “bailouts” and “spreading the wealth” because it might not benefit them PERSONALLY. They think profit and exploitation of others is good instead of selfish and evil. They want a world where there are winners and losers because they are going to cheat to be a winner. They know that success is based on LUCK but don’t want to let that secret out or share what they have. They’re a-holes.
So which are you? If you’re in the ignorant majority, let us teach you. It’s not too late.

We just went through months of listening how an elected governor that has over seen
one of the biggest energy projects in American history,produced jobs,a budget,80 % approval rating,and helped raise a large family lacks experience and intelligence but a trust fund baby that has done nothing but say “I’m a Kennedy” is qualified to be a senator.
Kind of like listening to all the moral outrage from liberals about Rick Warren at the Inauguration but 20 years supporting a racist bigot like Wright is okay.

Sorry Happy. Let me (briefly for me [grin]) explain:
When Dad had his stroke, and he wasn’t awakening from his coma, we started to go through his things so we could keep his affairs going until he recovered. While reading his political journals we noticed that he had a few blogs where he considered the commentors close friends, very close pen-pals if you like. One was MM’s blog. It was decided that I would take over his commenting to keep his account from going “stale” through inactivity. I’ve heard of instances where a person’s account was broomed, (ie, deleted) from inactivity and catching MM’s with open registration is difficult. I was picked because in the family my political views are closest to Dad’s. I’ve tried to speak with his voice here and the other places I’ve been standing in for him, but frankly I’ve done a mediocre job at best. I simply don’t have his depth of experience or knowledge of the Founding Fathers, (BTW, from the tone of Dad’s journals I suspect Samuel Chase was his lunch-buddy…), history of governments, etc. I think W. Cleon Skousen could hold his own, but I’ve never seen any one else who was able to do it.

Oh yeah, and then there was the couple of large moving boxes of stuff for Balad.
I have donated blood, including apheresis donations since I was 18. THAT’S personal.
I have spent time at nusing homes with elderly people who have no one else to care for them – reading and baking (got a kick butt diabetic cookie recipe that is soft and chewy for people without teeth!)
I have tutored kids in disadvantaged schools in California – one little girl made a turn-around from failing all her classes to mostly B’s.
I raised my boys (24 and 29) to do the same. The elder has taken in foster kids (even though he has 7 of his own) and the younger has his “favorite” homeless people that he takes to McD’s for meals when he has a time. #2 son is in college and also tutored kids in Palo Alto and coached kids teams in parts of Los Angeles even though he is working almost full time, too.

Last thought for this go around. Only an idiot would include profit and exploitation of others in the same sentence as though they were synonymous. They aren’t equivalent in any way, shape or form. Profits in and of themselves exploit nobody. They are what provide the citizenry as a whole an enhanced standard of living. Exploitation of others comes in the form of a government that demands exhorbitant taxes from producers and hands the money to non-producers with no obligations that the takers contribute or pay back.
The problem with liberals is that they view the world as a zero sum game. If someone makes a profit, then automatically someone else has to take a loss. Nonsense! The economic marketplace doesn’t work like that. If I make a million dollars, that does absolutely nothing to diminish your chances to do the same provided you’re willing to work for it.
