You all remember that Barack Obama made his famous comments about bitter, clingy, racist rural Americans at a posh fund-raiser in the Bay Area — America’s role model of tolerance and understanding.
Well, look who’s bitter, clingy, and racist now (hat tip – JWF):
As more and more black renters began moving into this mostly white San Francisco Bay Area suburb a few years ago, neighbors started complaining about loud parties, mean pit bulls, blaring car radios, prostitution, drug dealing and muggings of schoolchildren.
In 2006, as the influx reached its peak, the police department formed a special crime-fighting unit to deal with the complaints, and authorities began cracking down on tenants in federally subsidized housing.
Now that police unit is the focus of lawsuits by black families who allege the city of 100,000 is orchestrating a campaign to drive them out.
“A lot of people are moving out here looking for a better place to live,” said Karen Coleman, a mother of three who came here five years ago from a blighted neighborhood in nearby Pittsburg. “We are trying to raise our kids like everyone else. But they don’t want us here.”
City officials deny the allegations in the lawsuits, which were filed last spring and seek unspecified damages.Across the country, similar tensions have simmered when federally subsidized renters escaped run-down housing projects and violent neighborhoods by moving to nicer communities in suburban Washington, Chicago and Los Angeles.
But the friction in Antioch is “hotter than elsewhere,” said U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development spokesman Larry Bush.

Not that I believe this for one minute, but why would it be ‘hotter’ there, hmmmmm?

Yeah, this is “NIMBY” plain and simple. Leftists LOVE to sit around their all-white neighborhoods and discuss how backward southerners discriminate against minorities.
If leftists didn’t have double standards they would have no standards at all.

I’ve lived in neighborhoods like what they describe in the article, and through work, diligence, and changes in personal habits and lifestyle I haved moved up. I intend to keep going.
I wondered how long it would take to see this here. It’s always amusing to see hypocrisy exposed.
My opinion, though, is that although there’s obviously a racial component to issues such as this, race is a distraction that keeps us from solving the underlying problem. People without self-respect will not respect anyone or anything, and you can’t give someone self-respect in their welfare check or rent subsidy.
But in San FranSICKO, people aren’t allowed to have guns to which they can cling.
Thus, gang-bangers can move out to their neighborhoods and run amok.
Government subsidized movement of the ghetto to anywhere the ghetto wants to be. They now have a right to bring their crime into your neighborhood. Another side effect of government mandated equality and opportunity which proves it’s failure.

This has always been my point. It would be OK if they called the the ‘N word’ (they wouldn’t, but it would be less racist than this). This is specific discrimination based on stereotypes and skin color. This is what racism looks like. Racism doesn’t look like someone saying the ‘n word’. Racism looks like people demonizing an entire race to drive them out of an area.
These are the people who look down on the south that actually has to deal with race issues regularly and daily. We don’t really even have ‘white areas’ and ‘black areas’ where I live. We all live together. There are loud and obnoxious neighbors of all colors and creeds. . . of course in SF all they care about is the terrible black neighbors.
When chastising the South for Jim Crow laws it wasn’t an issue they had to deal with (they didn’t have many blacks). I expect SF to adopt Jim Crow laws and claim them to be ‘progressive’ because of this episode.
Just goes to show you can take the thug out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of the thug. Another failure result for liberal social engineering. Looks like Oakland will soon lose its distinction as one of the most dangerous and worst cities in the Bay Area to live in. San Fransicko and Bezerkly are battling hard to see who can be the most outrageous and out of touch with reality city to live in.

Oakland’s “crime” is pretty centralized (not to minimize it, but you can avoid bad areas). Most parts of Oakland are fairly safe. (No, I’m not joking).
Antioch, CA, Pittsburgh, CA (shares a city line with Antioch) and Richmond, CA’s bad area’s are pretty hard to avoid. I work in Oakland, downtown. I feel safer walking around here than I would in Pittsburgh and Richmond…hands down.
Some of the Contra Costa County Suburbs have a very disturbing gang problem, which get’s over-shadowed by “Oakland”’s reputation.

Last visit to the Bay Area was back in 2004 and I noticed several other areas looking pretty rough too. Reason number 21,456 we are relieved we did not return to the People’s Republic of Kalifornia when retiring from the Air Force.

I saw this in my local newspaper this morning. The part I really liked was at the very end of the article, this paragraph:
“Tensions like those afflicting Antioch have drawn scholars and law enforcement officials to debate whether crime follows subsidized renters out of the tenements to the suburbs”.
A couple of real gems in that paragraph:
1. They have to “debate” this when the evidence seems to be really clear that crime increases where these folks are?
2. Notice how “crime follows” the renters . . . nowhere is there any indication that perhaps, just perhaps, crime isn’t some sort of unknown force that “follows” the renters, but is something actually perpetrated by at least some of the renters.
The problem Ms. Coleman, is that when people leave the blighted areas too many decide to bring the blight with them. Unfortunately for those who live in the neightborhood they aren’t used to the blight and don’t want it.
I wonder how many of these folks voted for the idiots who promote the entitlement mentality and are now facing the reality of what they actually voted to enact. We get the government we deserve.
Well the Demoralcrats have the control for at least the next two years, do you think they will see the error of their ways and fix it? I’m not holding my breath, I’m betting it gets much worse.

I live here in the Bay Area. We have been told for decades that if we just “integrated”, everything would be peachy. The sad truth is that there are some ethnic groups who will NOT assimilate into the mainstream, and therefore are not welcome by the mainstream when they are relocated into our communities.
There are lots of people of every ethnic group in my town, which is in Contra Costa county, but not near Antioch. We all live here and get along, or at least live side by side, with really no problems.
Antioch used to be a working class Delta town. About 10 years ago, all these new houses went up and it became a major bedroom community for SF commuters. I know a couple of cops that live there.
But the Contra Costa Housing Authority began issuing Sect 8 vouchers to families in the housing projects in Richmond. Those families got subsidies big enough to rent $600,000 houses in Antioch.
How do YOU think YOU would like it if you had just bought one of those houses for your family, only to have the Richmond ghetto brought to you!
That’s what happening in Antioch now.
Grossly anti-social behavior by these transplanted blacks is the problem. It’s not “racism”.
I suggest people look up block busting. It was a common practice of Daley (the First) – yes it was a conspiracy. Realtors went into white neighborhoods (a block at a time) and made low ball offers. Then the insurance companies would cancel the property insurance. Then the realtors would return with even lower offers. They would get a few bites, then sell the houses at higher prices to blacks. Daley and his gang got quite rich from such schemes.
Then they went to building Human Filing Cabinets, called Urban Housing. These quickly turned into ghettos and incubators for more gangs (that Daley learned to control).
Eventually Urban Housing has “evolved” into subprime housing. And now we are bankrupt because of it.
Just wait until the illegals getting Section 8 start moving in!

Huggybutt – Antioch is not a wealthy suburb in the Bay Area, it never has been. But as explained by a poster above, it WAS a working class town until goverment subsidized and subprime housing came in.

Years ago, I had a black family move in next to me in a neighborhood that was just beginning to ‘tip’. Within a month, my garden lost its morning sun as they put up a six foot privacy fence and I was told “we do what we want”. Then came the parties until 4 A.M., and it was I who “don’t understand the culture”. I am totally empethetic to the people in this article.

My past experience with the “welfare types” (most, not all) is that once they trash their current federal housing, it’s easier to just move to a new “better” place, rather than maintain, or clean up their current abode. I know of no responsible parent who raised their kids to have loud parties, raise mean fighting dogs (regardless of the breed), play loud music that disturbs the neighbors, engage in prostitution, deal or buy drugs, or mug others. California has changed a lot for the worse since those very happy days I remember from my youth. Liberals are always calling for equal outcomes regardless of individual actions. If more blacks commit crimes than any other race, and THEY DO, then more Blacks should be arrested, convicted and impriosoned, and they are.It sounds perfectly fair to me.
The only other alternative is to give blacks a pass, and not enforce criminal laws because of their race, while holding other races to a stricter standard.

Yes. The black subculture is the problem, not blacks themselves. God loves them just as much as whites or any race, yet they (those who buy into the black subculture) refuse to believe it. Deep in their gut, they believe white man is superior to them. It’s taught to them from birth by their own parents. They want to be successful, but to them, the color of success is white. Since they can never be white, they can never be successful. Therefore they sabotage their own success and label blacks that are truly successful as sell-outs, Uncle Toms, grey-meat, etc… They mimic white man as a caricature: wearing pants down around their rear-ends, sideways baseball caps, gaudy jewelry, clothes, and cars, warped “music”, and overall uncivilized behavior. That’s as close as they can come to being successful (in their minds) without losing their sub-cultural identity. Because of their self-imposed exile to successful living, they are angry …very angry. They are frustrated because they know they can never enjoy the higher living standard of whites. I think this causes some of their belligerence and attitude of entitlement. Their thinking goes: I can never legitimately attain what white man has; white man put me in this situation through slavery; white man owes me; therefore I’m justified in taking from white man and to blame my problems on him; I am white mans’ victim.
Since they believe this at their core, they’ll never get ahead. Practicing the black subculture means never taking responsibility for one’s decisions but instead blaming circumstances and others for their sins and failures.

Note that everyone has feelings of entitlement and don’t like to take responsibility for failures. That is due to the fallen state of humanity. God is working to mature each of us in these and other areas. The problem begins when a person blocks out God, and bad attitudes and thinking distortions begin to define the person’s life. Herein lies the real danger of the black subculture: it has become a multi-generational framework of solidarity to the entitlement and victimhood movement. It’s like a family or religion in a lot of ways, which is why it is so hard for a black person to escape it. I thank God for those that do escape. I am happy for them individually and because they set such a great example. If the others could only begin to see that the color of success isn’t white; it’s green (so to speak).

I have lived on my neighborhood for 20 years. When I moved in it was about 65% white and 35% black It is now about 80% black and 20% white. My black neighbors whom I have known for 20 years are angry with some of the new black neighbors, because they have multiple families move in and out, and cars are being parked in the front yard, etc. Some of them have moved out.
My one neighbor was abosolutely livid when she heard some the government help the new neighbors were getting to buy these homes and remarked how she and her late husband had to scrimp and save for the down payment to buy hers. She is a big Democrat and I explained to her about her chosen elected official did this, but she still votes Democrat(okay socialist).

With all of the crap that assaults this country comming from San Francisco, I am amazed that they have the stones to complain about what anyone in thier community does. The rest of us have to put up with the Gay parades, Illegal alien protecting, homeless rights, Environitwits, and the rest of the assorted fruits and nuts. I hope the pitbulls bark all night and they are too tired to attend the next “No ROTC” ralley.
Maybe the new section 8 residents of Antioch, California can do like the residents of public housing here in south Georgia: have illegal Mexicans keep the places all nice, tidy, lawns mowed, bushes trimmed, places painted, all at government expense too. The local public housing web site declares that dope dealing is the ONLY reason you can be turned down for free housing. You CANNOT be turned down if (1) you don’t have a job, (2) you aren’t looking for a job, or (3) you aren’t going to job training of any kind. In other words, free government handouts for life, no strings attached beyond color. Now that public housing is moving to the burbs, people there will get to enjoy its benefits too. BTW, most blacks live in Oakland, etc, because San Francisco costs too much and they moved across the Bay years ago.

A family member (big liberal) works in SF and during the hotel workers strike, saw a line of picketers outside a hotel, making lots of noise at about 7am. A guest (african-american) stuck his head out the window and yelled for them to be quiet; he had gotten in late and wanted to sleep. One of the strikers yelled back, “Shut up, you f’ing ni&&er!”

I wrote a dKos diary on this, anticipating some strong denial/hate from the Liberal/Democrat/Progressive bloc, but didn’t get anymore more than it’s a “class, not a race” problem in Antioch.
Nonetheless, I liked my post! It’s funny how when liberal tolerance-for-all meets economic reality, attitudes move to the right. They say there are no atheists in a foxhole; and I guess there are no kumbayah liberals in a crime-ridden town.

I once did maintenance work in an expensive apartment building in Highland Park, IL that had a few section 8 units. I didn’t know about it until I entered an apartment to investigate a leak and found a 20 something black guy asleep on a mattress in the living room in the middle of a weekday afternoon. I am a CPA now and understand that the owner got some kind of HUD financing that required this, but WTF is the point of moving some slacker into a buiding with people who are paying market prices?
I’ll guarantee you that he wasn’t improving race relations.

Hey, you guys talking about Rancho Cordova are making me soggy with nostalgia. I lived on Mather AFB back in 1954-55 when my dad was training as a B47 navigator.. My school bus used to drive past the entrance to R.C. every day on our way into Sacramento.
No freeway then, just a liesurely drive past eucalyptus trees, a winery, fields of hops…
Back then, though, California was….California!!!! Beautiful place, not yet ruined by leftism run amok.

It’s the Katrina Effect.
This article and this blog makes me sad. My brother and his wife bought their first home in 1990 out in the new development in Antioch. The schools were new, the stores were new, everything was brand new in this “master-planned community”. Every homeowner had Mello-Roos tax to pay to finance the communities infrastructure. The sprawl continued, it became the bedroom community mentioned here by several posters, and the property values soared. In 12 years, the homes were valued at 3x the original purchase price, and many like my family members sold and moved closer to the East Bay Area. Their houses were purchased by lovely African-American families who were indeed looking for a better life for their kids. Whatever assistance these families received as first-time homebuyers, their hearts were right and their hopes were high.
Unfortunately for many, their kids brought their disadvantaged friends with them, the houses became overflowing with gangsta youth, parties, etc. Crime skyrocketed, the town had to impose a 9pm curfew and it was practically a war zone. Those houses are now worth less than their price in 1990, and the early residents are broke.
If you don’t embrace the need for and benefits of assimilation, you cannot hope for the better life you seek. This is true for immigrants, both foreign and domestic.
It’s not about the color of their skin; it’s about the cultural divide and the entitlement mentality. No race has the market cornered on this.
You can take the boyz outta the hood, but you can’t take the hood outta the boyz. Those people are just making harder on themselves; if they can’t act with a modicum of civility, why should they expect a warmer welcome?
I work for the welfare department of a large Bay Area county. A few years ago I was working in a program that was building low income housing. It was contracted by a non-profit and the housing was for “homeless” families. They spend months building the place, and then the families moved in.
Within three months, the place was trashed. Electrical wires ripped out, light fixtures smashed, hallways covered with graffitti, elevator doors jammed, shopping carts left in the halls, etc.
Within 90 days.
Growing up in Antioch in the mid 80’s, I can say that the town used to be low to middle class (the rich ones lived in the city) and we stayed out of Pittsburg. I can remember that the people of the town may not have had the most money (some called us simple white trash), but we did have a LOT of pride in our little Delta town. Have not been back there in about 15 years, but it is sad to hear.
You are so right, sdillard. I have a dear friend that works for HUD and one of
her jobs is to inspect the living quarters of a lot of people in government housing. She can tell horror stories about what happens to these places. After
Katrina, a lot of repossessed property wound up being used to hire Katrina
refugees and they trashed every bit of it and then screamed that they were being housed in substandard living conditions. She said that she was called
names she did not know existed when she tried to inspect the properties and
had to have the law with her to get into half of them, even though they agreed to the inspections before moving in.

When I first saw the story I laughed out loud. Typical bourgeoisie white liberals. I live in the Seattle area and it’s the same way up here.
Bainbridge Island, a rich ultra-liberal bastion, celebrates diversity day religiously and with fevor, but if you look at the statistics of the Island, it’s 95% white, and if you exclude the northern tip of the island that is reservation property, then it’s 98% white. That’s some diversity. I guess the uptight liberal white folk don’t like minorities messing up their neighborhoods.
Another example of liberal hypocrisy is when their lily white kids will lose out due to affirmative action, then they talk about “the Post-Racial world” to rationalize why they should select the son or daughter of a rich white liberal over a disadvantaged minority for a scholarship or internship or job. Ha! Liberals are such idiots.
I absolutely hate it when some white liberal kid starts talking about racism. Maybe he should look at himself first before pointing the finger.

Read it, and then you tell me exactly who you thought of that was perpetrating these things. Tell me who it is that first went into your head when “loud music” and “Pitbulls”, “Drug dealing”, “Prostitution” and the rest was mentioned as becoming an issue in the neighborhood.
Can you honestly claim that the first thing that popped into their heads was, “Damn…something needs to be done about all these white folks and their ‘trailer-trash’ ways,”?
No. You didn’t. Yes, all the things mentioned in this article are all stereo-types. But where is it that stereotypes come from? Are they made-up out of the blue? No. All anyone need do is to go into the “bad” neighborhoods and what you will see is exactly what they mentioned in this article.
Had this article stated, “Neighbors began complaining about the multiple cars in various states of working condition and cider-blocked parking, unkempt lawns and couches on the front lawn, along with the rise in Methamphetamine problems,” THEN what would you have thought? Would you have thought, “Boy, those blacks and Mexicans…”. No, you wouldn’t.
But what are these people ultimately asking for these offenders to do? Why, they are asking them to “sell out”. They are telling them that if they want to live in their neighborhoods, then they have to give up their ethnicity, they must give over to the ways of “Whitey” and all his evilness. After all, that is what they say about anyone who does not speak in “Ebonics” (the term being invented in the Bay Area), who wears normal clothing tht fits properly, who wears a hat forward on their head, who has a regular car with regular stereo listened at regular levels, who does not advertise and endorse smoking marijuana like they were $1 a pack cigarrettes, who do not refer to women as “B*****s” and “Ho’s” and actually treats women with the respect they deserve, etc. They call them, “Sell-outs” and “Uncle Tom’s” (which, if you actually read “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” does not make sense) amongst other things.
So don’t blame the people who are complaining about these issues. Blame those who promote them as a right, as a matter of ethnicity, as something to be emmulated and celebrated as a racial identity.
And yes, those that do the above identification and celebrations are, most likely, the very ones complaining about it now that it is in their neighborhoods, but as long as people like “Scoop Doggy Poop” or whatever his name is, and the rest of the “Gangsta” Rap culture, Hip Hop culture and the rest are held up as heroes and people to be worshipped and idolized instead of Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Will Smith and other regular people who have turned their backs on promoting the stereotypes that then get pissed off about, there will be no changes and the people who suffered and died during the 50’s and 60’s and all the decades before to bring about the racial changes and make MLK’s “dream” a reality have all suffered and died in vain.
I don’t like to hear this happen to any neighborhood, but it just seems so fitting for San Francisco. It’s almost enjoyable. After all, they brought it upon themselves.
If we were really people with compassion, the welfare system would be dismantled so men would not feel emasculated and would be compelled to support their families. Women may also understand the need for chastity.

These people are not “renters”, they are Section 8
housingwelfare recipients. They contribute a pittance toward their rent but the government gives them a huge subsidy to cover the rest.A lot of speculators are buying up homes and renting them out as Section 8. It’s a great deal for the speculator as the government guarantees the “rent” and they even come in later and rehab the house for you after the deadbeat tenants have wrecked it.
Section 8 is an unmitigated disaster for everyone but those who benefit from the taxpayer’s very generous largess.

My opinion…You don’t have to be a man-hater to expect a man to take some responsibility for sex and not blame all the problems on the woman. To say that women should understand the need for chastity and not mention the role of the man in that scenario is sexist and one-sided. That is not man-hating, that is fairness.

I agree with you, but the same could be said if you had interchanged the genders in your statement, but this has nothing to do with nlebou’s statement.
nlebou said, “men”. She (I presume) didn’t say “a man”. nlebou is the one not being fair. She makes a blanket statement against all men, that none of us men understand the need for chastity. I, at least, do understand it, therefore she is wrong.
