If that is not the criteria for voting for a LT. Governor than what is?
I agree you, FM, that's how it should be but isn't, as we all well know. My comment was mainly in support of the poster with whom Chap took issue, by seeming to insinuate that Patterson (although not specifically named) was elected under his own merit - I highly doubt it.

On January 6th, 2009 at 11:03 am, chapoutier said:

The UN-ELECTED Gov of New York, appoints the UN-ELECTED SENATOR for New York… Makes sense to me!!!

Uh…the Lietenant Governor is elected for the express purpose of stepping in if the current governor can no longer serve.

Like most states' citizens, I'd say a majority of NY'ers didn't even know who their Lt gov was let alone his stance on the issues facing NY, until Spitzer's peccadilloes become public knowledge. Patterson is the beneficiary of being second on Spitzer's ticket, not because he best represents the ideals or values of a majority of NY voters.

Sorry for the confusion.

Hey as long as we're dreaming of term limits, I'd settle for a constitutional amendment that would put in place a five year sunset clause on every single law passed by congress with the exception of tax cuts.

ThackerAgency,

"They should give it to someone without a trust fund. I wouldn’t care, but they get a great pension for serving even one day in the senate. They get it for life. I would hope that there would be a more needy and qualified individual than Kennedy for this spot."

You are mistaken. Members of Congress are subject to the same retirement system as other Federal employees. You might want to do some research before commenting next time.

Basically, a Congresscritter must serve 5 years before getting any benefits under the FERS.

Rocketman, #75.

Good idea. Personally, I think the best way is to have the same term limits for federal, state, and local offices. You get 12 consecutive years. Once the clock starts it doesn't stop. Period.

As an addendum, once you accept elective office, you can never hold any job that is paid from the public treasury. If you leave early, the limits still apply. Once you are elected, there's no way out. That's your choice for being elected.

This way, when the socialists want to increase taxes or add some burdensome regulation, the out-going socialists won't support them. They still have to find jobs in the private sector since they can't feed from the public trough to pay their bills.

You can't be a lobbyist either.

How is it Gov. Mr. PatHerA$$ can appoint who he wants, while Gov. Bagof$hit(?) of Ill. can't...are they both not following the state's constitutions replacing representatives of the their state?
Ones black and ones white, that couldn't matter, could it?

The more I think about this, the better I like it. It would represent the return to a citizen legislature with defacto term limts and end the political class, at least in the legislative branch.
