Harry Reid’s shamnesty stand: Senate Bill 9 will tear down the border “wall”

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 8, 2009 11:08 PM

Harry Reid has filed S. 9, the Democrats’ new shamnesty bill. Not much difference in principle between Reid’s bill and McCain-Kennedy-Bush. Disingenuous lip service to immigration enforcement? Check. Path to legalization? Check.

There are a few new nuggets — most notably, open hostility to the Fence in Name Only on our southern border. Quoting from the bill:

And I believe we would be wise to reconsider the effectiveness and cost of a wall along our southern border, which has adversely affected the fragile environment and vibrant cross-border culture of an entire region. Such a wall stands as a symbol of fear and intolerance. This is not what America is about and we can do better.

“Vibrant cross-border culture?” Like the hellish, head-chopping, kidnapping and lawlessness striking fear on both sides of the border? “Fragile environment?” He’s more concerned about some desert plant than he is about the MS-13 gang members and drug runners traipsing across the “region.”

That’s not all. Also prominently featured in Reid’s bill:

We must also live up to the goal of family reunification in our immigration policy and join at least 19 other nations that provide immigration equality to same-sex partners of different nationalities.

These are his top immigration concerns? God help us.

Oh, by the way: McCain Hispanic outreach advisor and anti-”wall” activist Juan Hernandez approves!

I have to remember thought that Harry Reid and his ilk are an insulated class in their gated communities and armed protections. They don’t need to worry about MS13 or illegal drunk drivers or all that stuff us unwashed masses have to worry about. I’m sure glad for the new Capitol visitors center so Lord Harry doesn’t have to come within smell distance of the people.

“Family reunification”? We (American citizens) did not separate them, they did it to themselves. Secondly, what the heck do we need with more jihadosexuals? We have enough way too many of these sicko loons already here.

I bet Harry Reid has no understanding of the basic parameters of the US population.

    >> Current Total Population:
    305,580,000 …and growing.

    >> We are the third most populous country on the planet (behind China and India, respectively).

    >> Our population grows by approx 2.5-3.0 million EACH YEAR. That’s the approximate population of the state of Iowa.

    >> Almost all other industrialized/advanced/”Westernized” nations, have a lower population growth rate.

    >> Current Growth Rate: (approx. 1-1.5%)
eg. total number of new persons:
2.5 to 3.0 million. Of those, approx 1/2 are foreign-born persons (”immigrants” – including legal immigrants and illegal aliens). The other approx. 50% are from domestic births. Of the foreign entrants, approx. 800,000-1,000,000 enter or remain in the US illegally each year.
(of course, it is not easy or reliable to count those that tend to not want to be counted).

As a country, we really lack an official population policy (yes, as ominous and “big-brotherish” as that might sound). Even worse, and perhaps more importantly, we have foregone the discussion of what one might be, or what one should be. In any event, I would suggest that a population that is at or near 0-0.5% growth is a sustainable and manageable population level.

Keeping the population at near zero growth rate relying upon domestic births to offset native deaths would be a predictable and sustainable way to deal with the overall population level (with small allowances for refugees, very highly skilled professionals to work, etc).

There is not one problem – not one – that is solved simply by allowing more people into the country.

Shame, shame on you Harry Reid. You are gambling shamelessly with America’s future with little regard for the once great country and her citizens. I’m glad I left your party a long time ago.

    2. Only taxpayers can vote. If you derive your income from public assitance (food stamps, section 8, unemployment insurance, welfare) you can’t vote. No more politicians buying votes. All voters must present proof of ID and Taxpayer status.

    3. Government employees (elected and full time (exempt military & law enforcement)) cannot receive raises when there is deficit spending. Elected officials should get their pay reduced in deficit spending.

    4. Immediately ammend the 14th Ammendment so only children of legal citizens can claim birthright citizenship.

    5. No public funds to be used for economic bailouts. Except for natural disasters and acts of war.

I think this is a good start, but hell will freeze over before it happens.

Now, with all of the problems that illegal immigration brings (and granting the fact it IS Dingy Harry we’re talking about anyway…), I still find it so odd as to why someone from a state which has something to gain from *stopping* illegals from crossing over…would in fact champion their cause.

But if we take it step by step, and issue by issue, building a wall is both sensible, provides for the safety and security of our nation, and worth the cost.

Stemming, or in some areas outright preventing, the flow of illegal drugs, guns, and known human trafficking…where’s the negative here? Unless you’re good with idea?

Making people follow the established and legal method of gaining entry into our country and becoming citizen…who thinks upholding the law is a bad idea?

    Apparently, Harry Reid does.

By not having the wall, by having agencies turn a blind eye to the illegals, and by allowing them to bring their drugs, guns, crime, prostitution, gangs, and subplanting culture here, it diminishes us all.

Pelosi would be harder to beat because she lives in la la land. But Reid…good grief, someone has to stop this POS!

Congress is shutting down any chance for us to have a voice there, and will probably pass the “Kill Free Speech” bill (formerly known as “Fairness Doctrine) and they will do it after hours, in the dead of night so no one will have a chance to oppose it. This is truly turning into a dictatorship before our very eyes. Pray for our conservative spokespeople, like Michelle Malkin, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, all the others on the radio and webs. I don’t think that, I know that. They’ve already plotted the course for some segments, and that’s where it goes. The fence can’t be built in the floodplain, because of flooding and because international treaty prohibits it. Structures could change the course of the river, which would change the border. This is against the international boundary treaty.

It will be built outside the floodplain, as much as a mile north of the actual border. I know someone whose farm will be cut in two, and the house and equipment sheds will be on the south side where the fields are. They know they’ll have access to it, but they don’t know how; they don’t know where the gates and the gaps will be, and who will have keys. So they’re holding out until they can find out just exactly what loss of value the impaired access will cause. They’re probably going to get screwed anyway. The govt usually won’t pay the true value on land seizures.

juliesa, I live on the border in southern AZ and here the fence is 10feet this side of the real border between Mexico and the US. It was T. Roosevelt I believe (must fact check this) who established a 60 foot “easement” between the two countries that would be specifically for the defence of the US should it ever be necessary–but it has never been enforced and it could have been thrown away in some obscure bill in the last 100 years anyway.

In places along the Rio Grande where there would be problems with a physical fence such as they have been building there should be intensive coverage by boots on the ground. Barring that make it a concrete ditch like they did the LA “river” (that big ditch you see in all the movies with the trickle of water running down the middle) I guarantee it will NOT change the direction of the river and all the BS about “boundries” will be dropped in a heart beat. Who says the fence has to start at ground level?? who said it has to be made of wire? Concrete works too. They can build it 10 feet behind the existing banks 20ft deep and 20 ft high with a road way on top–just like LA. Steep enough and NOBODY will be climbing. As for environmental issues–it is a moot point since the entire southern border region is nothing but a pile of garbage now anyway. There is no “environment” left to preserve. It doesn’t take a rocket scientists to solve these simple problems–just common sense. Something DHS lacks.

You are right, it makes no sense to put a fence a mile away from the actual border. The gov’t is required to give fair market value when they do a taking but that is of today not any time in the future. When splitting a homestead you would think they could make a deviation that would not slice a property in half like that–since they are already a mile away.
