juliesa, I live on the border in southern AZ and here the fence is 10feet this side of the real border between Mexico and the US. It was T. Roosevelt I believe (must fact check this) who established a 60 foot “easement” between the two countries that would be specifically for the defence of the US should it ever be necessary–but it has never been enforced and it could have been thrown away in some obscure bill in the last 100 years anyway.

In places along the Rio Grande where there would be problems with a physical fence such as they have been building there should be intensive coverage by boots on the ground. Barring that make it a concrete ditch like they did the LA “river” (that big ditch you see in all the movies with the trickle of water running down the middle) I guarantee it will NOT change the direction of the river and all the BS about “boundries” will be dropped in a heart beat. Who says the fence has to start at ground level?? who said it has to be made of wire? Concrete works too. They can build it 10 feet behind the existing banks 20ft deep and 20 ft high with a road way on top–just like LA. Steep enough and NOBODY will be climbing. As for environmental issues–it is a moot point since the entire southern border region is nothing but a pile of garbage now anyway. There is no “environment” left to preserve. It doesn’t take a rocket scientists to solve these simple problems–just common sense. Something DHS lacks.

You are right, it makes no sense to put a fence a mile away from the actual border. The gov’t is required to give fair market value when they do a taking but that is of today not any time in the future. When splitting a homestead you would think they could make a deviation that would not slice a property in half like that–since they are already a mile away.
