Obama promises to work weekends to pass Generational Theft Act

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 8, 2009 11:41 AM

The Wealth Redistributor-Elect just wrapped up his fear-mongering speech on behalf of the Generational Theft Act of 2009.

He promised “bold,” “sweeping” and “dramatic” action, including giving up his weekends to work America into an even bigger spending abyss.

Wonder if he’ll give up his gym time? Then we’ll know he’s really serious.

The most galling line came near the end when he exhorted the public to get behind his growth-stifling agenda in order to save our future from “dire consequences.” We need to spend a trillion dollars on “green jobs” and bloated union pork projects “for the children.”

For the children.

The man has chutzpah.

Yes. Go to your “regular” job Monday-Friday, and show up at a government program Saturday and Sunday.

There is one thing Obama and Congress don’t seem to realize when they talk about these huge spending plans that depend on the US being able to sell bonds to fund them: http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/01/07/business/yuan.php – “U.S. debt is losing its appeal in China” – so who exactly is going to buy the bonds to fund this borrowing? The dollar is going to tank big time in the next few years unless the US does something and borrowing more money is the opposite of what is needed. The media has completely ignore the fact about there is no one to fund our debt any more when they talk about these huge spending plans.

Either that or quit allowing government to contract for goods and services at higher prices than what the individual consumer pays. I have to choose from lists of vendors that my school system has contracts with and all of those vendors offer the EXACT SAME products for at least 25% more than what I would pay for it as a regular consumer. Of course, I MUST buy from one of those approved vendors, I can’t go and save $100 on a printer or $300 on a computer by buying somewhere else. It’s like that with government everywhere. It makes no sense.

Ok, let try to break this down,

dumbest, drunkest, most insecure, laziest President ever

He did graduate from Ivy league universities, I can’t recall seeing or hearing of him being drunk in office, he seemed to me to handle himself fairly securely when the shoes were flying and we have been relatively safe from attack on his watch.

He’s cultivated extensive damage to our economy

I believe he had very little to do with this. Our economic problems really began during the Carter administration with the Community Reinvestment act (CRA) that started the trend toward lending to unqualified borrowers. This was further re-inforced under Clinton and continued, despite administration warnings about Fanny/Freddy under the Democratic congress. Remember, the Dems gained control of congress in 2006 and were staunch defenders of Fanny/Freddie.

As for our military, they seem to be doing just fine, especially since the surge and our relationships around the world have never been anything to brag about because as a rule we don’t harbor the defeatist mindset and socialistic malaise demonstrated by most of the rest of the world.

I just don’t understand why questioning the policies of the President Elect would make everyone on this board a racist? Or is that how you perceive everyone that questions the wishes of “The One”?

MARK LANDSBAUM of the Orange County Register addressed this issue regarding the state budget crisis, but it is certainly relevant to the Obama economic plan:

Looking back on the catastrophe of California’s state finances over the past 12 months is like watching a slow-motion train wreck in progress. The momentum was so great, it seemed impossible to reverse course.

The final crash may turn out even worse than estimated, but so far the damage is projected to be a budget about $40 billion in the red by the end of next fiscal year. That’s nearly half the anticipated tax revenue for 2009-2010. Now that’sa train wreck.

During the year, there were many voices that insisted on turning left or right. That is to say, some demanded a left turn to collect even more taxes than already extracted from an overtaxed citizenry. Others insisted on turning right to reduce overspending on many programs and employees that ostensibly serve the public, or to reduce taxes to lighten taxpayers’ burden.

Both arguments missed the point. California’s financial disaster can’t be fixed with higher taxes, or federal bailouts or by making it easier to impose new taxes, which were suggestions made during the past year by legislative Democrats and the similarly minded Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Indeed, the state’s financial calamity even can’t be fixed by reducing spending or targeting tax cuts, as many Republicans suggested, a conclusion readers of this column might be surprised to read here.

Neither pumping more money into this bloated system, nor draining some out, will correct the underlying problem of this fiscal mess. Those approaches treat symptoms. That has been the approach all year: bandages when amputations are called for.

As long as Californians look to their state government to do things for them that government shouldn’t be doing, this problem will persist, and inevitably get worse. As long as Californians think there’s no downside to living at someone else’s expense, this problem will not go away.

Everyone with a voice, it seemed over the past year, criticized state government for not dealing with the crisis. Critics, including yours truly, complained that stopgap fixes, accounting gimmickry and borrowing from Peter to pay Paul merely kicked the can down the road for someone else to deal with at a later date.

That’s all true enough, but true in a way many critics probably don’t realize. The Legislature and governor kicked the can down the road to put off major decisions, such as how much to spend, how much to cut and how much to tax. But a far more fundamental issue was kicked down the road simultaneously. Not just “how much,” but “whether.”

It’s not likely the Legislature or governor will address the ultimate question of “whether.” It’s anyone’s guess if they even will address the superficial question of “how much.”

It begs the question to argue, as Democrats have, that Californians should abolish the two-thirds vote requirement for adopting budgets and imposing new taxes. Their argument presumes increasing taxes is justified. They merely argue for a way to make that happen. But more than that, they presume the two-thirds constitutional requirement is less worthy than a tax increase.

Even when Republicans argue for less spending or lower taxes, they implicitly concede that spending and taxing are justified. They merely argue over how much. That’s the same argument their opponents make, just to a different degree.

Both left and right have argued from a presumption of entitlement. Conservative and liberal alike largely regard the existing activities of state government as necessary. The people, they assume, are entitled to government-provided education, health, welfare, housing, transit or even subsidies and regulations on every business and nearly every private activity from Eureka to Imperial Beach – almost all paid for largely by someone else.

One of this nation’s founders two centuries ago, give or take a decade, said, “There are certain primary truths, or first principles, upon which all subsequent reasoning must depend.”

First principles dictate subsequent reasoning. If people believe, for example, that their children are entitled to an education paid for by their neighbor, they will fixate on how to provide that benefit without giving a second thought to the idea that their children aren’t entitled to the fruits of someone else’s labor. First principles set a course much like a railroad track. The direction is inevitable. It’s only the speed that’s left for debate.

    http://www.ocregister.com/articles/county-park-inmates-2267896-state-report

Unfortunately, I doubt that we will ever again have a debate on First Principles.

That is because the best thing bush did was let the free market economy work it through. It was tough for a lot techies back then but the market sorted it out. Now every idiot pol (who couldn’t balance a checkbook much less run a business) is interfering with the market principles in an attempt to prop up the system. I can always be had that limited intervention is not bad if the proposals are well designed. But they are now just throwing everything against the wall in hopes something sticks. What they will do is either A) run up the deficit with no results or B) temporarily prop up the markets but in the process create inflation not seen in decades. THe economy must be handled delicately. It is easy to overshoot your goals due to lag times.

I was getting bored today, so i guess edelschizer’s post will have to do for the moment.

    Let’s see here..

This country desperately needs to move toward a more egalitarian society: the same opportunities for all of its citizens…

Because that has worked wonders in places like China, North Korea…and who doesn’t have opportunities? You’re going to have to clarify that point a little, if you can.

Taxing more heavily the wealthy is a good beginning.

The people considered “wealthy” already bear the brunt of the tax system. It’s not about taxing people who are productive MORE..its about making the government SPEND less than it takes in. I mean, crap…err…schizer…people can balance their checkbooks that way. You bring in X amount of income. In order to not go into the red, you spend less than that amount. Taxes keep going up for everyone, and government sees that as creative license to go spend more. Again, simplistic principle.

We also need to transfer more funds to poorer cities / neighborhoods

Some of these “poor” cities…get more subsidies than any other location. I would take washington d.c (both as a clear example of their own back yard, as well as an example of what throwing money at say…schools does…for instance). Per child, D.C spends more per kid than almost anywhere else in the country. And yet…their schools are still in the crapper. Throwing money at the problem there didn’t fix it. That example repeats itself all across the country, where places that have the most money thrown at them by the government are still in such poor shape.

impose mandatory health insurance for all,

Explain to me why forcing me to have health insurance that I’m going to have to pay for (in an already strained economy + you want me to distribute wealth, be taxed more…all this cash has to come from somewhere!) is a good idea? What if, for example, I can’t afford it now (before your self-imposed changes), how am i supposed to afford that as well? “Oh, abstract…well, the government would issue credits or vouchers!” But isnt that from the taxes they’re taking from me…so i’m paying for it myself anyway? Seems silly to me, and it certainly doesnt play out in the numbers well.

levy more taxes on gasoline (min 20¢/Gal), tobacco, spirits,

Again, more taxes on an already strained economy and populace. When is taking more from people who have little to give already a good idea?

Finally all Interstate highways must become toll roads (except urban ones) so that we can rebuild the damn crumbling roads and railroads.

Just as a FYI, the taxes from gasoline, etc…are what are supposed to be paying for road repair and the like. State lotteries are another example of where funds for these types of repairs, along with federal funds, come from specifically. I dont have a problem with toll roads per se, but…placing a toll booth on every road is again just another of draining the public dry.

How about something more responsible? How about keeping taxes low so people have more disposable income, which is injected back into the economy in the form of spending?

How about making taxes fair for everyone, such as a flat tax? you said 15%. i like that number. i believe it was close to what Forbes actually suggested years ago. And it would be equal, so no one could say rich people were getting away from their taxes.

How about stop throwing money into failing government programs, and trying to throw more money at problems already existing that writing a check doesn’t cure?

Curb wasteful spending. Be fiscally responsible in Washington.

THAT is change you can believe in.

Asking the American people to put more burden on their backs is simply the wrong answer, no matter how you approach the problem.
