Orrin Hatch hearts Holder

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 12, 2009 02:54 PM

He’s been signaling it for weeks, but now it’s official: GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch will support AG nominee Eric Holder’s nomination. The Hill reports on the embrace. Hatch explains GOP leadership at work: “I like Barack Obama and I want to help him if I can.” I’m too tired to break out the dead elephant and my head hurts from all those Mitch McConnell head-banging-against-the-wall moments.

The morbid details:

The former Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee will support Eric Holder’s nomination for attorney general, giving him a major boost toward confirmation.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah), who chaired the panel for a decade beginning in 1995, told The Hill that he will support Holder.

“I intend to,” said Hatch.

His decision could undermine GOP efforts to stall or block the confirmation. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) said Friday that Holder would be the only Cabinet nominee to face a tough confirmation fight.

Hatch said that Republicans should try to strike a cooperative tone with President-elect Obama during the first days of his administration.

“I start with the premise that the president deserves the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think politics should be played with the attorney general,” he said.

“I like Barack Obama and want to help him if I can.”

Never mind what the victims of Eric Holder’s lack of judgement have to say, eh, Sen. Hatch?

Holder clearly does not have the judgment, character or values to be Attorney General.

If politics don’t play into anything to do with the AG why was Gonzales railroaded out? And you can see the Kool Aid affected old Orin. He “likes” Obama so let’s just be blind and support him. After all, as Michelle has pointed out, you would be racist not to.

For a little while, I was actually proud to claim that I am related to Orrin Hatch (although distantly!), but he is no longer welcome in my home and I have taken him out of my Will (ha)! Off topic a bit…I thought GW did a good job today in his final press conference. He said things that he should have said years ago. He defended the government response to Katrina…finally!!! Of course he had to go and ruin it all by mentioning “immigration”, all the while pretending he thinks all the complaining is being done about the LEGAL immigrants. That big elephant in the room is still there!

Hatch is my senator. I tried to vote him out of office, but Pete Ashdown didn’t get backing from his own party to take Hatch on effectively.

I fax Hatch and email him and call him to encourage him to make conservative decisions, but it’s just not in his makeup. You should read the letters he sends back in reply. He’s too much of a Washington insider now. I don’t think he sees things from his constituents’ perspective anymore.

I don’t know if it was here at MM.com or HotAir that I saw Hatch’s amazing grilling of Holder in a 2001 SJC hearing regarding the Rich pardon as Slick slid out of office and earlier FALN commutations. Clinton and Holder had their stories straight; if Clinton was asked why, he would say Holder endorsed the moves, and if Holder was asked, he would say the Constitution says the final decision belongs to the President. Hatch was annoyed and frustrated, and I figured that would translate into even greater skepticism and tougher questions now that he is up for the top cop spot.

I forgot I was thinking Hatch was reliable. Silly me.

It reminds me of the final episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. The new boss at WJM-TV (David Ogden Stiers) is rumored to be firing everyone in the newsroom, with bombastic buffoon anchorman Ted Baxter (played by the vastly underrated Ted Knight) being first on the chopping block. As the entire staff is led into the chief’s office, Baxter is almost blubbering. But they are all stunned as the boss singles out Ted, and says, “You’re staying. Everybody else is fired.”

Ted is relieved to say the least, but then he sees the fallen faces of his friends. He summons up some courage and a stern face, and tells the boss that if they are fired, he’ll quit in solidarity.

The new honcho walks up to Baxter and says, “I wish you would reconsider.” Two seconds later, he whispers, “OK, OK, I’ll stay.”

Ted later gives a half-hearted apology for caving, saying that he is really happy about keeping his job. Writer Murray Slaughter (Gavin MacLeod) responds the way I feel about Hatch at this point:

That’s OK … when a donkey flies, you don’t expect it to stay in the air too long.”

I guess we should amend that to “when an elephant flies” — or maybe, when a RINO flies.

Hi, I’m Mark, and… Orrin Hatch is my senator…

Unfortunately both Hatch and Bob Bennett have succumbed to the “Old Boys” group of RINOs. Neither is listening to their constituents, and both have made major errors in caving to ideas of bipartisanship and surrendering conservative ideals. Each has been too secure in their belief that they are omnipotent incumbents.

Well, here in our 3rd District we have thrown out RINO Chris Cannon and sent conservative Jason Chaffetz to the House. Next in our sights will be the two senators. Their liberal votes will be remembered and come back to haunt them next election.

They enclosed a postage paid envelope and y’all know what they’re going to get back….a cut up pre-approved pre-printed plastic membership card.

Orrin Hatch has slid down the long travelled road that John McCain slid and they’ve both got big ol’ holes in the seats of their pants. I refuse to fund another fiasco, and pay for the deadwood executives that now inhabits the RNCC…I’ll be very choosey who I donate to in the future.

Interesting that you would say that. When Orrin first ran for the Senate, the incumbent (I think it was a previous Bennett)was just finishing his third term, and so he ran his campaign on the premise that “three terms is enough for anyone”. And “If elected I will only be there for three terms.” (or something along those lines).

According to his web site, he was first elected to the Senate in Nov 1976. I’m not the best at math, but I calculate three terms in the U.S. Senate as ending in 1994.

Living example for term limits indeed.

And he’s a big reaching across the aisle to “my good friend” Teddy kind of Senator besides.
