Off topic a bit…I thought GW did a good job today in his final press conference. He said things that he should have said years ago. He defended the government response to Katrina…finally!!! Of course he had to go and ruin it all by mentioning “immigration”, all the while pretending he thinks all the complaining is being done about the LEGAL immigrants.    I fax Hatch and email him and call him to encourage him to make conservative decisions, but it’s just not in his makeup. You should read the letters he sends back in reply. He’s too much of a Washington insider now. I don’t think he sees things from his constituents’ perspective anymore.

Clinton and Holder had their stories straight; if Clinton was asked why, he would say Holder endorsed the moves, and if Holder was asked, he would say the Constitution says the final decision belongs to the President. Hatch was annoyed and frustrated, and I figured that would translate into even greater skepticism and tougher questions now that he is up for the top cop spot.

    It reminds me of the final episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. The new boss at WJM-TV (David Ogden Stiers) is rumored to be firing everyone in the newsroom, with bombastic buffoon anchorman Ted Baxter (played by the vastly underrated Ted Knight) being first on the chopping block. As the entire staff is led into the chief’s office, Baxter is almost blubbering. But they are all stunned as the boss singles out Ted, and says, “You’re staying. Everybody else is fired.”

    Ted is relieved to say the least, but then he sees the fallen faces of his friends. He summons up some courage and a stern face, and tells the boss that if they are fired, he’ll quit in solidarity.

    The new honcho walks up to Baxter and says, “I wish you would reconsider.” Two seconds later, he whispers, “OK, OK, I’ll stay.”

    Ted later gives a half-hearted apology for caving, saying that he is really happy about keeping his job. Writer Murray Slaughter (Gavin MacLeod) responds the way I feel about Hatch at this point:

    That’s OK … when a donkey flies, you don’t expect it to stay in the air too long.”

    I guess we should amend that to “when an elephant flies” — or maybe, when a RINO flies.

    Unfortunately both Hatch and Bob Bennett have succumbed to the “Old Boys” group of RINOs. Neither is listening to their constituents, and both have made major errors in caving to ideas of bipartisanship and surrendering conservative ideals. Each has been too secure in their belief that they are omnipotent incumbents.

    Well, here in our 3rd District we have thrown out RINO Chris Cannon and sent conservative Jason Chaffetz to the House. Next in our sights will be the two senators. Their liberal votes will be remembered and come back to haunt them next election.

    Interesting that you would say that. When Orrin first ran for the Senate, the incumbent (I think it was a previous Bennett)was just finishing his third term, and so he ran his campaign on the premise that “three terms is enough for anyone”. And “If elected I will only be there for three terms.” (or something along those lines).

    According to his web site, he was first elected to the Senate in Nov 1976. I’m not the best at math, but I calculate three terms in the U.S. Senate as ending in 1994.

    Living example for term limits indeed.

    And he’s a big reaching across the aisle to “my good friend” Teddy kind of Senator besides.
