If someone burned a flag with Obama’s face on it in America, liberals would be demanding a hate crime prosecution.
But if it’s Hamas sympathizers burning Obama flags to protest Israel, well, they deserve our “empathy.”

I believe he said terrorists act out of a fundamental lack of empathy for human life. Very different. You can debate whether or not his opinion about that is accurate, but don’t distort it.
They had better be careful about taking this too far or else TEH ONE will be forced to issue a sternly worded rebuke!
Any empathy I had for palestinians disappeared on September 11, 2001, when I saw men, women and children joyfully dancing in the streets after the WTC was destroyed. They can all go straight to hell.

I’m of the opinion that it is indeed best to know your enemy however the term empathy is more commonly associated with ‘pity’ which is both dangerous and foolish to apply to terrorists as far as national security goes.

Maybe that is why he didn’t use the word “empathize” and instead used the word “understand.” Its clear he knows the meaning of both, seeing as he actually does use the word “empathy” in the next sentence when speaking about terrorists lack thereof.

Careless on my part, but Obama didn’t say we should sympathize with terrorists, terrorist supporters, or Hamas supporters, either. So in any case MM is still distorting what he said. The only time he mentions empathy is to say that terrorists lack empathy for human life. He does not say WE should empathize with ANYONE. And despite what Socky says, that is a distinction with real difference, whether you agree with Obama’s conclusion or not.
But speaking of distinctions with no difference…I thought our foreign policy didn’t distinguish between the terrorists and those that supported them. Didn’t Bush say something to that effect after 9/11? So isn’t what I originally said technically correct?

My apologies in belaboring the empathy topic on a thread hardly anyone’s concerned with anymore, but I kinda agree with you, chapoutier. Obama said fairly clearly in the quote that the terrorists are lacking in empathy for the misery they create, but he also said we need to “understand” the terrorists’ mindset, which in itself is bordering on empathy. Did Obama say we need to feel sympathy for terrorists? Thankfully, no, not that I’m aware of. He would not be in any elected office if he ever said such a thing, I would hope. If Michelle didn’t put “empathy” in quotations, would this even be a valid point of discussion? Or would it simply have been a link back to another post involving the word empathy?
Not exactly sure who I’m defending here (probably both sides), but that’s my problem/delusion as a mod-con — wanting everyone to play nice, my occasional lame comments/fiery wit notwithstanding. Pardon me for butting in.
