    Maybe that is why he didn’t use the word “empathize” and instead used the word “understand.” Its clear he knows the meaning of both, seeing as he actually does use the word “empathy” in the next sentence when speaking about terrorists lack thereof.

    Careless on my part, but Obama didn’t say we should sympathize with terrorists, terrorist supporters, or Hamas supporters, either. So in any case MM is still distorting what he said. The only time he mentions empathy is to say that terrorists lack empathy for human life. He does not say WE should empathize with ANYONE. And despite what Socky says, that is a distinction with real difference, whether you agree with Obama’s conclusion or not.

    But speaking of distinctions with no difference…I thought our foreign policy didn’t distinguish between the terrorists and those that supported them. Didn’t Bush say something to that effect after 9/11? So isn’t what I originally said technically correct?

    and linking to a post in which the only person to talk about empathy (though in a very different way) is Obama is pretty clearly implying that Obama is the one saying we need to empathize?
