My apologies in belaboring the empathy topic on a thread hardly anyone’s concerned with anymore, but I kinda agree with you, chapoutier. Obama said fairly clearly in the quote that the terrorists are lacking in empathy for the misery they create, but he also said we need to “understand” the terrorists’ mindset, which in itself is bordering on empathy. Did Obama say we need to feel sympathy for terrorists? Thankfully, no, not that I’m aware of. He would not be in any elected office if he ever said such a thing, I would hope. If Michelle didn’t put “empathy” in quotations, would this even be a valid point of discussion? Or would it simply have been a link back to another post involving the word empathy?

Not exactly sure who I’m defending here (probably both sides), but that’s my problem/delusion as a mod-con — wanting everyone to play nice, my occasional lame comments/fiery wit notwithstanding. Pardon me for butting in.

and linking to a post in which the only person to talk about empathy (though in a very different way) is Obama is pretty clearly implying that Obama is the one saying we need to empathize?

Even if the Muslims conquered the world they still would hate. They would hate other muslims and claim they are not muslim enough. There is so much hate in them that no matter what kind of money or how many women they have they will still be full of hatred.
