Bailout failout: GOP measure to stop TARP II goes down

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 15, 2009 05:00 PM

A group of Senate GOP conservatives attempted to stop the Bush/Obama/Reid money grab for the second half of the Crap Sandwich.

The measure went down 42-52. I’ll post the roll call vote when it goes up.

Andrew Moylan at NTU:

The Senate just voted 42-52, FAILING to pass a resolution of disapproval on spending $350 billion more on the TARP bailout plan. That means that they supported the second half of the bailout. The measure will now move to the House where, if it passes, it will certainly be signed into law.

FAILout, part II. Apparently that first $350 billion was so effective that the Senate couldn’t help itself but to vote for the second half, too.

Borrow. Spend. Panic. Repeat. The inexorable cycle goes on.

Sen. David Vitter’s statement:

U.S. Sen. David Vitter today issued the following statement regarding the vote on his resolution of disapproval against President Bush’s request to release additional funds under the Troubled Assets Relief Program on behalf of President-elect Obama’s incoming administration. A provision within the bailout bill passed by Congress last fall provides Congress with 15 days to pass a resolution of disapproval to stop the release of additional funds. Vitter Tuesday introduced a disapproval resolution co-sponsored by U.S. Sens. Bunning, DeMint, Inhofe, Sessions, Barrasso, Brownback, Enzi, Cornyn and Roberts, but the resolution was not approved by this evening’s vote of 42-52.

“We came close but fell short in this important fight in defense of the taxpayer. Considering the harsh criticism that has accompanied the management of the first half of the $700 billion released by the government, I’m disappointed the Senate has chosen to ignore the majority of the American people and has instead moved to release the rest of the TARP funds – especially with no real accountability for this money in place. We have seen an unprecedented level of spending in the recent months and are digging our nation deeper into debt,” said Vitter.

Because on any given issue, there are more than enough RINOs to stop it. After all, the ‘Rats only need a couple of them now.

These true patriots, for the people, U.S. Sens. Bunning, DeMint, Inhofe, Sessions, Barrasso, Brownback, Enzi, Cornyn and Roberts, need to distance themselves from the RINOs and form their own party. If they want to see the fastest emerging political party for a sure win in the next election, they need to break away from the GOP and start a party for the people. The GOP as we know it, is dead and buried. A new party will win hands down. If they stay with the GOP, they will become outcast within their own RINO party. You guys need to take heed to my words. The time is ripe and the American people are fed up with the crap sandwiches force fed to us. Obviously the will of the people doesn’t matter anymore, but it will be in November 2010. That is if we are still alive then. Demint is one of my Senators that I am proud of and I am urging him on to form a new political party.

I’m not a scholar, but my thought is that a filibuster is used to keep the floor/debate on a proposed bill in the Senate open to prevent it from being voted upon. That 40 votes are necessary to stop debate and vote.

This instance is that the previous TARP law has the funds being released without further action necessary by the Senate.

The actual bill voted upon here was to prevent the funds from being released under the terms of the previous bill. So… it was necessary to bring this bill to the floor to KILL the TARP bill from having it’s “funds” (actually debt) released.

I agree to a point. It will be nice to see who stands out as a true conservative, fiscally, at least. From these, we might be able to build anew.

Maybe it’s just me, but I seem to remember that back in October we were told that if the mortgage industry wasn’t ’saved’ immediately, the whole world was going to end. Now here we are in January, the only monies spent were to relieve banks (who promptly 1: threw it in their savings accounts, 2: bought other banks, or 3: paid out bonuses), and to my knowledge, not one mortgage has been saved. The primary restructuring was done by the fed reducing the prime rates to near zero.

So, now the banks are back with “Please Sir, may I have more”, and our good politicians are bending over backward.

Since the amount of money in these TARP/bailout/stimulus/shush funds is so gigantic, that’s what people naturally focus on. It’s also worth noting how miserably government does on projects that are paid for by your money.

A prime example is right in my neighborhood. An addition of a carpool lane to a section of a freeway for only a few miles has now gone on for more than five years with no end in sight. The traffic situation is much worse than it was before, with cars staying on surface streets for longer periods of time, belching pollution as they idle. Time and time, deadlines have not been met, and no one or no company has been held to account. A few blocks away, work began on an existing on-ramp more than a year ago. It is still closed, although signs first promised it would reopen September 15. I think the next date was October 15. The last goal was completion by the end of 2008. There are new signs, new unused lanes, and even functioning, useless, traffic signals, but the “work” still has to go on for some reason – perhaps to pad the pockets of the construction companies and unions – the same folks who are now lobbying for pieces of the ever-increasing federal boondoggle fund.
