I’ve known and still know many Vietnam era Army helicopter pilots and Air Force pilots and all of them fit the mold of Sully Sullenberger. They are truly exceptional human beings.

If I was a passenger on that plane, I’d be on my knees thanking God for the foresight of having Capt. Sully as the pilot of that plane. What are the odds of having someone with his training and expertise piloting that plane in those circumstances? It has to be a ‘come to Jesus’ moment in anyone’s life.

Wow – what a bio. My eyes are leaking.

I fly US Airways almost exclusively ~ 150+ segments a year. I earnestly hope I have the honor to fly with the Captain someday.

In this event, God’s grace met human excellence and 150 families are blessed as a result. God bless you Capt. Sullenberger.

I wonder if he’s a conservative? If he is, and the Today show finds out about it, except “Sully the pilot” to be raked over the coals. Such is the MSM. Though the election is over, I wonder how many reporters, in trying to make a name for themselves, have people poring over his past right now? For myself, he’s a hero. God bless him.

My son-in-law who is an ex Air Force pilot and now flies for a major airline told me essentially the same thing. He said the Captain had an enormous amount of skill and a lot of luck.

I’d like to know if Sculy knows Dennis Fitch the cool check-pilot on flight 232. I’m sure he’s familiar with him.
Haynes kept his sense of humor during the emergency, as recorded on the plane’s CVR:

Fitch: I’ll tell you what, we’ll have a beer when this is all done.
Haynes: Well I don’t drink, but I’ll sure as hell have one.
    and later:

Sioux City Approach: United Two Thirty-Two Heavy, the wind’s currently three six zero at one one; three sixty at eleven. You’re cleared to land on any runway.
Haynes: [laughter] Roger. [laughter] You want to be particular and make it a runway, huh?[4]

I’m glad that we’re not so cavalier about the experience level of our commercial pilots. Too bad we do not hold our political offices to the same measure. If they decide to build a monument to this man (and they should), I hope that they don’t try to diversify the crap out of it, like they did with the 9/11 firefighters statue. It should be a statue to excellence, not diversity or affirmative action!

I had the pleasure of talking with my daughters yesterday and their responses to Capt. “Sulley” amazing skills were all the same. “With all the depressing political news out there we now have a public figure that’s a true HERO”. This dialogue came from three adult women, from three different phone conversations. I had no idea that my daughters lives were that vacant of people they could admire.
We all need to become Capt. “Sulley”.

No, Sully can actually DO hard things well and help others because it’s the right thing to do. The One so far is all Marxist theory, talk, and campaign.

Anyone who’s highly trained for emergency situations, i.e. pilots, EMS, military always seem calm to those who lack the knowledge of the problem and how to deal with it. Seconds after the engines failed Sully and his copilot were going through checklists, communicating to ATC, etc. They didn’t have time to be scared. They did what they were trained to do. And they did it well…

We live in a world where superficial, bloviating, talentless poseurs monopolize the media spotlight. Every so often, a crisis arises that requires ordinray workaday Americans to reveal extraordinary depths of courage, skill and character. In a dark week to be highlighted (or lowlighted, maybe) by the media’s collective swoon over the inauguration of an undeserving, unaccomplished snake oil salesman, the heroism of Captain Sullenberger was a welcome reminder of what really makes this country great.

This is definitely a case where as everything went wrong – everything went right. Besides Sully’s skill and luck in making an extrodinary water landing, you have to credit the flight crew.
Also give credit to the first responders. If not for their speedy reaction, Sully’s landing might have been for naught.
I salute all who had a part in this event and kept it from being deadly.

Jeff2161 in post #13 is already ahead of the curve. I saw two moronic talking head lawyers on Fox News discussing ways people could sue. One of them suggested an idea in that there wasn’t any covers over the engines. The bloodletting/scapegoating & screwing over for money has already started. Sully’s a hero today, but someone soon will make him a villian. He doesn’t deserve it, but it sure as hell will happen.

They won’t sue the crew. No money there. The lawyers will go after the company. They’ll find something and then, hope that they will settle out of court. That way, for filing papers, they get millions, and the plantiffs get very little. The latter will have dreams of money soon, encouraged by the lawyers, only to find out they were the ones screwed.

    ————————————-

Maybe the airline or the manufacturer of the plane . . . I just can’t imagine how anyone could find fault with Captain Kick-A@@ Sully or his co-pilot or crew.

A few injuries, no fatalities, in a situation like this? That is nothing less than superhuman (with a little supernatural help thrown in, of course).
