Not all conservatives are singing O-Kumbaya
I respect the historic tradition of inauguration day, not the cult of personality driving the schlock festivities now taking place.
Pomp and circumstance have been replaced with pimp and self-aggrandizement — all topped with a heapful of double standards.
I’m not the only one who thinks so. Politico’s Daniel Libit has a piece this morning quoting several conservatives willing to dissent from the Beltway O-Kumbaya. The intro:
With Barack Obama’s approval ratings in the 70s and his visage plastered on every shop window and Metro card in Washington, it’s hard to remember that 58 million Americans voted for the other guy.
Even President Bush — who presumably counts himself among that group — said last week that Obama’s inauguration is “a moment of hope and pride.”
That’s not exactly how Michelle Malkin describes it.
“Jan. 20 has turned into a schlock inauguration, (where) every last moocher has come to cash in on Obama,” says the conservative blogger and pundit. “There are some of us who want to bang our heads against the wall.”
While most Republicans now in office are saying all the right things about Tuesday’s proceedings — roll tape on “peaceful transfer of power” and “historic moment for the country” sound bites — some conservatives can’t quite get themselves in the “We Are One” mood.
Not even for a day.
On his radio show last week, Rush Limbaugh railed against “people on our side of the aisle who have caved and who say, ‘Well, I hope he succeeds. We have to give him a chance.’”
“Why?” Limbaugh demanded. “They didn’t give Bush a chance in 2000. Before he was inaugurated, the search-and-destroy mission had begun. I’m not talking about search-and-destroy, but I’ve been listening to Barack Obama for a year and a half. I know what his politics are. I know what his plans are, as he has stated them. I don’t want them to succeed.”

Sister Toldjah notes that the AP has finally acknowledged the Obama-fest’s pricey pricetag in a dicey economy. ST points out Baghdad Jim McDermott’s disingenuous green defense of Obama-fest and skewers the hypocrisy:
The only thing more pathetic than McDermott’s hypocrisy is the fact that so many Obama worshippers who continue to descend on the Capitol in advance of PEBO’s inauguration are the same types who slammed John McCain as an out-of-touch rich guy living off his wife’s mega-wealth, so out of touch that he couldn’t remember how many houses they owned, and also criticizing Gov. Palin for spending decisions on her’s and her family’s wardrobes that she did not make, while at the same they painted Barack Obama as a humble guy who “gets the common man.” How many of these same people (including those in the mainstream press) would be looking the other way if it had been McCain/Palin holding this big, expensive Lincolnesque inaugural ceremony in the middle of this bleak economy?
The numbers would be in the single digits, I suspect.

I think we should wait to see him in action to be the vocal opposition. Right now if we too hyper-critical it looks like we are yelling at the wind since he hasn’t actually done anything yet.

having lived in inner city Los Angeles, I can unequivocally say the third world is here. It just isn’t in enough places yet for the people that matter to care. If your kid is in a private school and you live in a gated community, why would you care about diversity mandates, affirmative action, runaway immigration and the like?
We are like kids on the playground, moving down the slide with no worry as to what is quickly approaching below.

I respect the tradition as well, but I have no respect for the thug taking the oath of office. Count me as another conservative willing to dissent from the Beltway O-Kumbaya.
The day the race card is played in response to criticism of a failed Obama initiative will mark the day of his utter failure as a leader.
That said, I have to say that all of this “merchandising” and the hype of his train trip to Washington, a la Lincoln, and the ridiculous Lincoln lifestory parallel comparisons by people who should know better doesn’t paint a particularly original picture for a man in whom so much “change” and “difference” has been invested. But with such a thin resume to work with, I suppose it’s necessary to morph into the reincarnation of someone famous or beloved in order to gain legitimacy. Too many republicans do it with Reagan. All it tells me is that the calibre of much of our representation in Congress, and now perhaps the leadership in the White House, is pitifully low. We’ll see.
If you want symbolism, listen for the fiddle music during the $150 million dollar inauguration.
I want America to succeed, as others do, but this means that the policies of Socialism must fail. No O-Kumbaya from this corner!
Friday, I started a news media blackout. I have an idea it’s going to last for a long long time.
On a good note, the guy living across the street has finally taken down his Obama/Biden sign.
The Lincoln comparisons are nauseating. “Honest Abe” was, well…Honest! Abe had integrity. Abe walked in the snow, worked hard and was self educated. The character of Obama is 100% opposite of the character of Abe.
I hope Obama does do what is best for the US. For that he has my best wishes.
But I have little faith that he has the ability or judgement to make good decisions. He is more a celebrity than a leader.
So I wish him the best and I pray he has the wisdom to rise above his limitations.
I’ve yet to hear a newsreader ask how many of the really poor and needy $150M would feed.
Fixed that one. So many people have already overdosed on the Kool-Aid and many more will over the next few weeks. There may not be an intervention good enough to help these people.
When I grew up, people had pictures of the Last Supper in their houses. Now they have pictures of obama.

I heard Rush’s commentary on this, and I cheered. Obama’s plans for this country will destroy life as we know it (thanks for the head start on that, George), and so I pray that he will either change his policies or fail utterly. My country and culture are far more important than the feelings of some neophyte race pimp and his slobbering hoards, no matter how smooth his rhetoric is.
On a side note, Kumbaya has always been my least favorite hymn. I much prefer Blessed Assurance and Amazing Grace.

I understand the “wish for the best”, Amos. However, given whats been exposed of his character, I do not think this will happen. I pray for whats best for the country, which could mean many things (good and bad from Obama’s perspective, but mostly bad).
The only parallel I can draw between Obama and our sixteenth president is that their wives are nuttier than squirrel crap.
You know, I’d be down with throwing some support at an event like this. It could be the beginning of a grass-roots conservative revolution.

I am a staunch conservative who hangs on the edge of the right wing of the political spectrum by his fingertips, and I hope and I pray that Obama succeeds. Here’s why:
1. Like it or not, and I don’t like it, he’s gonna be the President of the United States.
2. I am an American.
3. That’s about it.
I do not hope that his politics succeed. I hope that his attempts at furthering the socialist agenda fail miserably, but I pray that he wakes up and realizes the error of his political ways. Certainly a longshot, but greater miracles have occurred.
I will hammer his liberal policies and his socialist agenda, but any good American would be foolish to not pray for him and hope that he undergoes a political conversion of sorts. Like it or not, he will be our President for the next four years.

First – Obama’s poll ratings are always going to be skewed because the same peoplewho conduct the polls – the MSM – are the same people who voted for Obama at least 12-1.

I can’t then respect a President who doesn’t abide by his oath to the Constitution or to God (“so help me, God”), or the office if it is corrupted. True, not all conservative/republicans are doing a Kumbaya number as the Obamagasm approaches, but the majority of them are. Obama has already made it clear what it domestic program is. If only a small part of it gets implemented it will be a catastrophe for what is left of America.

As for his foreign policy, I am unimpressed when I am not terrified. Pseudo-cons are singing his praises for appointing “Smart Power” (whatever that is) Hilary as secretary of state while he is already making overtures to Chavez. Well, let the Obama people have their fun on Inaugural Day. Unless you are invited to one of the special parties for the wealthy and political elites, I suspect the day will not be what many are expecting.
I went to the first Clinton Inauguration, not because I supported the man, but because I was living in the D.C. area and thought I should experience at least one. My impressions: A big crowd of people standing for hours in cold weather with a lousy view of what was happening. I heard that they are setting up 5000 porta-potties for the big crowd they are expecting. I don’t think it’s going to be the earth-changing great event that many are expectiing. Cold, crowds and inconvenience, not my idea of fun.
As for the new era of The Obama: Wednesday morning is going to be a big hangover for many. The problems we face are going to still be present after Inauguration Day. The vexing challenges that the world faces are not going to be solved with oratory and style. The Obama administration is going to have a disconcerting “now what do we do” moment very early on.
