And the crowd goes wild…Update: Obama/Roberts oath blooper; Update: Byrd/Kennedy taken away from inaugural lunch

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 20, 2009 11:43 AM

Awaiting the Obamapotheosis, the massive crowd on the mall has broken out into chants of “Obama! Obama! Obama!”

But remember: It’s not about him.

11:43am Eastern. Obama is announced: “The president of the United States, Barack H. Obama.”

Chanting in full force now: OBAMA, OBAMA, OBAMA!

***

11:50am Eastern. Rick Warren gives the invocation prayer. No audible boos, smattering of applause. People cheer during the prayer as Warren praises the first African-American president. He prays for “humility.”

Humility and the Obama administration do not compute.

11:56am Eastern. Ok, Aretha Franklin just melted my heart. Truly transcendent rendition of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”

Oh, no. Back to the Democrat leadership.

Wonderful performance by Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, and quartet members.

12:06pm Eastern. Obama bungles the oath. The visible nervousness is humanizing.

(Update: Justice Roberts flubbed, too.)

Obama takes the podium. Again with the “humble” stuff.

He thanks President Bush for his service to the nation. Scattered applause.

He’s back in his rhythm with help from the teleprompter.

12:15pm Eastern. Obama calls for “remaking America.” Chill up the spine.

“Transform” this and that. Wallet feeling emptier by the second.

12:19pm Eastern. And again with the “humility” thing.

Obama says he’ll leave Iraq, win in Afghanistan, AND defeat the terrorists: “You cannot outlast us and we will defeat you.”

How? By relying on the diversity of America, of course! Obama gives shout out to Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and non-believers.

Speech fizzles out.

12:33pm Eastern. Poet Elizabeth Alexander does a poor Maya Angelou imitation.
Reminder: She’s the magic vagina poet.

***

3:00pm Eastern. Robert Byrd and Ted Kennedy both taken away from inaugural lunch for medical reasons. Byrd for eating problems. Kennedy with convulsions.

I believe Jimmuh didn’t even use a middle initial. Seems like LBJ (first swearing in) didn’t use his name at all. In fact, the Constitution does not require that the person being sworn in state his/her name at all. Just that they will preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. Too bad BHO seems to believe that that same Constitution is a living, breathing document that must be “interpreted” according to the circumstances of the moment.

Truman’s mother’s side wanted his middle name to be one thing beginning with “S” and his father’s side another…they chose to make it just “S” so that both sides would be satisfied, leaving him with no middle name, and so goes the Democrat Party.

The country is better and stronger than you might think from its leadership.

At 12:17 on 1/20/09…now you tell us this??

If the President does a really really bad job, even the media will figure this out sooner or later

Correction – in the case of conservative Presidents = sooner, in the case of liberal Presidents = later.

and the guy and his party will be out in the next election cycle

I strenuously disagree. By recently defined, liberal standards – President Cliton’s first four years were the worst in US Presidential history to date in 1996. However, non-coverage of Clinton’s first four years, non-coverage of the 1996 DNC/Clinton reelection-financing-corruption, and an inordinate coverage of Bob Dole’s weaknesses gave every liberal reporter just what he/she was wishing for that year…four more years of a liberal in the White House.

Even in their sorry and weakened state today, never underestimate the power of the fourth branch of US government – the DNC media.

disrespecting the flag (and by extension the nation) we love won’t change that

Flying the flag at half-mast or upside down is not showing disrespect for the flag. They are signals, one is a sign of mourning, the other is a sign of distress.

I would submit our nation needs to mourn having elected a CINC we know so little about and we are likely to find ourselves in an extended period of distress because of it.

Perhaps if voters had actually tried to understand who they were voting for, instead of voting because “he is so cute, etc.” such signs wouldn’t be necessary. Perhaps they should have hewn to the old adage: Caveat Emptor

A mast is a pole on a boat with sails on it. Flags fly on staffs.

It is one of my predictions for 2009. He will reinstitute the draft, but a draftee will have a choice for “National Service”. It will be Vista, Peace Corp, Army or ACORN.
