Inauguration global warming temperature watch

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 20, 2009 10:27 AM

Sam Kazman at OpenMarket.org is monitoring the thermometer:

When President Bush leaves office today, will the capital be warmer or colder than when he was sworn in eight years ago?

It’s not scientifically meaningful, but it is interesting.

Bush has been heavily criticized for doing precious little to curb our emissions of carbon dioxide. During his eight years in office, atmospheric CO2 levels climbed by over four percent.

So what did Bush’s dilly-dallying produce in terms of deadly global warming? The temperature at noon in Washington DC will give us one factoid. It’s a scientifically meaningless factoid, since the local temperature on any one day, let alone any one hour, tells us nothing about long-term temperature trends, but it’s heavy in symbolism.

When Bush was first sworn in, in 2001, the temperature at noon in DC was 36 degrees F. What will it be today, when he leaves office? Will the capital be warmer or colder than when he took office eight years ago?

Don’t be surprised if it’s colder. Today’s forecast is for relatively low temperatures. More importantly, despite steady increases in atmospheric CO2, and despite everything you’ve heard about climate catastrophe, there’s been no warming for about the last decade, and the planet has actually cooled over the last three years.

So yes we should be cleaner, but no we shouldn’t bankrupt the country or industry to do it. The nobel commitee should be b!tch slaped for giving gore that prize.

Gore ice sculpture unveiled in Fairbanks
    Associated Press – January 19, 2009 8:14 PM ET

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – Al Gore is now a wintertime fixture in Fairbanks.

Well, make that an ice sculpture of the 2007 Nobel Prize winner and leader in the movement to draw attention to climate change and global warming.

Local businessman Craig Compeau unveiled the frozen likeness on Monday.

The 8 1/2-foot-tall, 5-ton sculpture dominates a downtown street corner from its perch on the back of a flatbed truck.

Compeau says he’s a “moderate” critic of global warming theories. He used Monday’s unveiling of the sculpture to invite Gore to Fairbanks — where it was 22 degrees on Monday — to explain his global warming theories.

He says it will stand through March, unless it melts before then.

If Gore had his way, there would be caveman SUVs to explain the end of the ice age 18000 years ago. We’ve been globally warming (and CO2 rising) ever since. The dirty little secret is that atmospheric CO2 rises with temperature, regardless of what we little Earthlings burn or don’t burn (you see the same effect in a carbonated soda). The alternative to warming is cooling. Once we start the cooling, historically temperatures crash a lot faster than the gradual warming periods. I’d much rather we continue warming than to see 1000 foot ice sheets over Detroit and Chicago.

It is currently 9ºF at Houlton and Caribou in Maine. Much warmer than last week.

Mt Washington, NH is 0º, but it is usually colder at 1910 meters. (6300 feet). Hence, they tend to put ski resorts near mountains. Or maybe, it is because one needs a slope for people to ski downhill.

1910 meters is, of course, puny by Texas standards, home of the largest mountain East of the Rockies, Guadelupe Peak. 2657 meters (8717 feet).

Of course, that is puny by California standards, but we don’t have a state income tax, a state lege that is two thirds Demonrat, nor two lib Dem senators
