Fare thee well, Queen Caroline; Update: Awkward! AP says she still wants in; Late late update: Spokesman confirms she’s out.

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 21, 2009 09:50 PM

The commentariat will say it was the “uhs” and “you knows” that killed Caroline Kennedy’s bid for Hillary’s Senate seat.

The halting media appearances certainly didn’t help. But ultimately, it was the regal sense of entitlement that done her in.

Dynastic expectations coupled with lack of public disclosure and questionable work ethics do not sit well with the American public.

Fare the well, Queen Caroline. Or, as us serfs like to put it: DLTDHYOTWO*!

*That’s “Don’t Let The Door Hit You On The Way Out” for those who do not rub elbows with the commoners.

***

Update: Via Allahpundit, the Associated Press reports late tonight that Caroline still wants in!

A person familiar with Caroline Kennedy’s decision says she has renewed her determination to win appointment to the U.S. Senate seat once held by her slain uncle, Sen. Bobby Kennedy.

The source says that after her surviving uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, suffered a seizure on Inauguration Day, Caroline Kennedy had misgivings about taking on the new job.

The source spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak for Kennedy. Earlier in the day, The New York Times and New York Post reported that Kennedy had ended her monthlong bid to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was confirmed as secretary of state.

Gov. David Paterson has said he hopes to make the appointment by this weekend.

Awkwardness. Intrigue. Grab the popcorn. It ain’t over yet.

***

Update 12:35am Eastern.
And the roller coaster ride comes to a screeching halt. Out. In. Out.

AP bulletin: Spokesman confirms Caroline has withdrawn.

Now, you can do like the moonbats did to George W. Bush and sing “Nah, nah, nah, hey, hey, goodbye…”

    Enable All Americans to Serve to Meet the Nation’s Challenges

    * Expand Corporation for National and Community Service:
    * Obama and Biden will expand AmeriCorps from 75,000 slots today to 250,000 and they will focus this expansion on addressing the great challenges facing the nation. They will establish a Classroom Corps to help teachers and students, with a priority placed on underserved schools; a Health Corps to improve public health outreach; a Clean Energy Corps to conduct weatherization and renewable energy projects; a Veterans Corps to assist veterans at hospitals, nursing homes and homeless shelters; and a Homeland Security Corps to help communities plan, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
    * Engage Retiring Americans in Service on a Large Scale:
    * Older Americans have a wide range of skills and knowledge to contribute. Obama and Biden will expand and improve programs that connect individuals over the age of 55 to quality volunteer opportunities.
    * Expand the Peace Corps:
    * Obama and Biden will double the Peace Corps to 16,000 by 2011. They will work with the leaders of other countries to build an international network of overseas volunteers so that Americans work side-by-side with volunteers from other countries.
    * Show the World the Best Face of America: Obama and Biden will set up an America’s Voice Initiative to send Americans who are fluent speakers of local languages to expand our public diplomacy. They also will extend opportunities for older individuals such as teachers, engineers, and doctors to serve overseas.

    Integrate Service into Learning

    * Expand Service-Learning in Our Nation’s Schools:
    * Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year. They will develop national guidelines for service- learning and will give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience. Green Job Corps: Obama and Biden will create an energy-focused youth jobs program to provide disadvantaged youth with service opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast-growing career fields.
    * Expand YouthBuild Program:
    * Obama and Biden will expand the YouthBuild program, which gives disadvantaged young people the chance to complete their high school education, learn valuable skills and build affordable housing in their communities. They will grow the program so that 50,000 low-income young people a year a chance to learn construction job skills and complete high school.
    * Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Obama and Biden will establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.
    * Promote College Serve-Study:
    * Obama and Biden will ensure that at least 25 percent of College Work-Study funds are used to support public service opportunities instead of jobs in dining halls and libraries.

BTW, I have stories to tell, but they had a well organized program. I was about the only white guy who didn’t leave when they announced Obama had won the primaries in Texas and Ohio by over 10%. (Don’t ask me how Texas had a primary and a caucus. BTW, I chose the Dem primary because McCain had it locked up before Texas, and it wasn’t just Rush Limbaugh, it was actually choosing the lesser of two evils, which I got to do again in November).

    Geez, as a former upstate New Yorker, I thought her highness was a terrible choice. It must have been eye-opening for some to find out that with all that Ivy League education her trust fund and Uncle Teddy could buy, poor Caroline didn’t quite have that “stage presence.” I’m sure somewhere, Sarah Palin is laughing her butt off.

    It is really time for the Kennedys to take the hint and let the Cuomos take over. That way, we’ll get a lot of miliage out of Mario Cuomo’s assurances that Obummer is, indeed, a moderate!

    It’s always a hoot when New Yorkers never learn that Dems aren’t as good at economics as they think. Wasn’t it former governor Cuomo that encouraged foreign business competition in the state of New York and also decided that taxing business some more couldn’t hurt? That thump that my mom heard in the ’80’s was her job leaving and businesses leaving or going out of business.

    Yeah, if you think Queen Caroline is terrible at public speaking/interviews, how many of you think she lives on a budget or agonizes over money like many of us do? :roll:

    As a New Yorker I am very dissapointed. Whoever our Gov.(who inherited his seat) picks is still going to be a hard-core lefty. I would MUCH rather have had Kennedy who was just awful and the public did not like her at all. She woudl have been the Dem’s incumbent pick to continue and would have been easy pickins for a Republican whose party in this state is lacluster at best. The RNC spends no $$ in NY believing it is a waist of resources. BIG MISTAKE. They need to get out the vote, educate and to get some nominees with some recognition.
    Now, with Kennedy out, we’ll get some Lib knowone has ever heard of and will be a much easier ticket for the Dem’s when the seat comes up for re-election.
    Rooting for Kennedy’s demise was a huge mistake. Should have waited until she was seated, then attack her. She would have easily crumbled. Now that seat will be VERY difficult for the Republicans to recapture.

    Of course, he can still give the seat to Fran “The Nanny” Dresser. She would be even easier to beat in 2 years than Kennedy would have been.
    So, keep your criticism down and root for the NANNY. Once in, we can then tear her apart!

    Ed,

    Sorry to correct you, but the Not so good ship Kennedy was an Oldsmobile (I think a 1967 Delta). Used to own a 1968 which looks very similar. Wanted to put a sign on the back saying, “Ted Kennedy thinks this car floats”.

    I read that Paterson may offer the seat to Andrew Cuomo. That would not be good. He would be tough to beat when he actually runs for the seat as an incumbent. I’m rootin’ for the “Nanny”.

    After that drippy Sermon By the Sea she gave about Saint Teddy at the Democratic Convention I had thought she was a shoe in. After all she is a Kennedy.There does seem to be a new generation in New York, perhaps America, that does not know or worship the name. Too bad that new generation still can not feed themselves off the public dole.

    Andrew Cuomo? Dynastic expectations #2. I always looked at his father as Jimmy Carter north. Andrew is Attorney General of New York so I imagine he uses campaign funds to visit hookers.

    Robert and Patric Kennedy still prowl the land as ravenous wolves but the Chicago gang seems to have stifled them for the moment. Fare thee well, Queen Caroline you are not missed.

    Exactly. It’s hard to tell if this was Patterson kicking his potential rival in the next governor’s race upstairs, or the Clintons-Cuomos trumping the Obama-Kennedys.

    Someone earlier said “She’ll get Uncle Ted’s seat.” They have meant it in jest, but in the world of family political dynasties, it is really not much of a stretch. The arrogance of it all is what gets me, and it does not matter what party does it. I was living in Alaska when Frank Murkowski chose his daughter to replace him in the senate. For reasons like that I have made it a personal choice to NEVER vote for the children or family of politicians. And as conservative as I am, for that reason, down the road, Jeb Bush will never get the presidency with my vote.

    Review: Kennedy expresses interest and in taken seriously because of her name and previous civic involvement. Some raise questions about her qualifications and experience. She does some interviews and comes off with a Palinesque inability to discuss issues. Interest in her quickly dissipates.

    Summary: the system worked fine. We did not get an unqualified Senator. Democrats did something right.

    I’ve heard some theories that she backed out because she may be appointed to Teddy’s seat when he gives up his seat.

    I’m sure in the next six months she’ll be in Government Service somewhere. Payback for supporting BHO.

    Maybe an Ambassadorship to France or Italy.

    I’m just glad she won’t be the next NY Senator. Although if Patterson appoints Gillenbrand to the Senate, she may be put in her Congressional Seat.

    Cuomo is a threat to Patterson, no matter what happens, for the next Governors’ election.
