Geert Wilders to be prosecuted for criticizing Islam

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 21, 2009 03:17 PM

It is, indeed, a “black day” for freedom of speech — and freedom of thought — as a Dutch court rules that parliamentarian and anti-jihadist filmmaker Geert Wilders should be put on trial for his criticism of Islam.

Diana West calls on the West to defend him.

Jim Hoft has much more.

Where does the Obama administration stand?

Where do you stand?

It will be interesting to see how the Dutch people react to this. They seem to be awakening to the threat of radical Islam. This could well be a rallying point and a win in court by Wilders could have a salutory impact on the nation as a whole.

He’s not being prosecuted specifically for making the film. It’s a combination of statements.

The Amsterdam Appeals Court called Wilders’ statements in his film, newspaper articles and media interviews “one-sided generalizations … which can amount to inciting hatred.”

“I’ve had enough of Islam in the Netherlands; let not one more Muslim immigrate,” he wrote once in national newspaper De Volkskrant. “I’ve had enough of the Koran in the Netherlands: Forbid that fascist book.”

    Thanks for the clarification.

I’d say he went a bit far in stating that no more Muslims should be allowed into his country, or that the Koran is a facist book that should be “forbidden”; not long ago, I read some posts on a different debate thread by someone who said essentially the same thing about the Bible (I’m a churchgoing Catholic, so we had a few words).

Still, if he is not calling for a “Final Solution” for Muslims in his country, or for any kind of violence against them, it should still be protected speech (he can say that the Koran should be “forbidden” all he wants as long as he doesn’t try to actually have it banned or burned).

After the 9-11 attacks, Neo-Nazi groups in the Czech Republic told bin-laden that their cells were ready to strike and they wished their followers had the gall to attack America.

I really still don’t know why you are on here either. You have not convinced anyone that being a liberal is a good thing.

It’s really not, and I do not see you changing anyone else’s mind.

One more thing, LGM, I saw the entire Fitna movie. There was no “hate speech” unless you consider the Koran itself hate speech, which is entirely what the movie is based on.

Naturally, though, since it is Islam it’s hate speech, but if it were about the Bible, you’d probably be cheering aloud.

Try the FireFox browser-it is faster than Internet Explore and has SpellCheck built in! It is free.

OK IF that includes shooting Murtha. ACORN would have them registered to vote in a week but that District deserves them.

Christians continue to spread the good news of G-d’s love for mankind along with morality. Morality, and rules? Why that is hate speech to those who worship themselves as G-d.

    Just like Lucifer.

Geert wilders let the muslims own words come out and the truth be known. Liberals hate the Truth if it is not helpful.
From the Hippies, probably before then:

The Truth is a Lie if it is not helpful
A Lie is the Truth if it is helpful

Oh, the audacity. Now the Dutch think it so “humanitarian” to prosecute someone for speaking up against the “religion of peace?” I know they smoke a lot of weed down there in good ole Amsterdam but there’s got to be some common sense penetrating through the “haze” so to speak.

I’m not really surprised about the Dutch treatment of this gentleman. They’re feel-good socialists who are pacifist by nature. They have the same plague that is striking many other European countries which is unfettered immigration from the Middle East and Africa.

I had the “privilege” (if you can call it that) of visiting Amsterdam in the ’90’s. I wanted to see where I came from since 1/4 of my ancestry is Dutch all the way back to the Dutch who settled New Amsterdam (that’s New York to you non-New Yorkers). What I found is that while the Dutch are friendly and open people, they’re a bit naive about not only human nature but human weakness. For example, when the Dutch legalized pot (and let numerous “coffee shops” open up) they thought a little vice wouldn’t be bad. The same holds true for prostitution. The problems started when organized crime made inroads into both “industries.”

The Dutch are slowly starting to wake up to the “real world” but not soon enough. They, like many Europeans, think their socialist “tolerance” is some kind of special and something that works. The Europeans are some of the biggest hypocrites (besides liberals here) that I’ve ever met. They preach tolerance for the poor, misunderstood Muslims but heaven forbid any criticism should happen.

All real freedom starts with freedom of speech. If there is no freedom of speech, then there can be no real freedom.

The Christians and Jews don’t riot when somebody makes fun of Christ or Jews. People must learn to be civilized, and held to account when they are not. Muslims included.

Geert Wilders is a hero spreading the painful truth. He MUST be protected!
