Robert Reich: Keep stimulus money away from skilled workers and “white male construction workers”
I missed Clintonite moldy oldie-turned-Obama economic adviser Robert Reich’s testimony a few weeks ago on how the government should spend federal stimulus money. The Berkeley professor engaged in academic fantasy land talk about getting all the cash out to workers as quickly as possible — a pipe dream debunked by the CBO report I mentioned in my column yesterday.
Even more noteworthy, however, were the comments Reich made about which workers deserve the stimulus bucks most. Reich’s proposal exposes the lie that the Obama administration is actually interested in revitalizing basic infrastructure for the good of the economy. No, what Team Obama really wants is to ensure that the least skilled, least qualified workers get jobs based on their chromosomes and pigment.
Reich wrote on his blog:
The stimulus plan will create jobs repairing and upgrading the nation’s roads, bridges, ports, levees, water and sewage system, public-transit systems, electricity grid, and schools. And it will kick-start alternative, non-fossil based sources of energy (wind, solar, geothermal, and so on); new health-care information systems; and universal broadband Internet access.
It’s a two-fer: lots of new jobs, and investments in the nation’s future productivity.
But if there aren’t enough skilled professionals to do the jobs involving new technologies, the stimulus will just increase the wages of the professionals who already have the right skills rather than generate many new jobs in these fields. And if construction jobs go mainly to white males who already dominate the construction trades, many people who need jobs the most — women, minorities, and the poor and long-term unemployed — will be shut out.
What to do? There’s no easy solution to either dilemma…
People can be trained relatively quickly for these sorts of jobs, as well as many infrastructure j0bs generated by the stimulus — installing new pipes for water and sewage systems, repairing and upgrading equipment, basic construction — but contractors have to be nudged both to provide the training and to do the hiring.
I’d suggest that all contracts entered into with stimulus funds require contractors to provide at least 20 percent of jobs to the long-term unemployed and to people with incomes at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. And at least 2 percent of project funds should be allocated to such training. In addition, advantage should be taken of buildings trades apprenticeships — wich must be fully available to women and minorities.
Reich made similar comments in his Jan. 7 congressional testimony on economic recovery. Naked Emperor News uploaded the video:

REICH: …”I am concerned, as I’m sure many of you are, that these jobs not simply go to high-skilled people who are already professionals or to white male construction workers…I have nothing against white male construction workers, I’m just saying there are other people who have needs as well.”
Yes, God forbid the jobs go to people with track records and experience. God forbid we judge stimulus recipients on the content of their resumes as opposed to the color of their skin.
There are other people who have needs as well.
Spoken like a true-blue wealth redistributor. The “needs” (read: demands) of politically protected minorities trump the need for competently build roads and bridges.
Rep. Charlie Rangel then chimes in to kvetch about how governors need to be “forced” to comply with formulas that earmark the stimulus money based on color-coded “needs.”
I quote Rangel: “Remove the discretion! Identify the ‘need.’ Do numbers.”
Translation: Screw qualifications. Quota-monger America out of its recession.
And here’s the kicker: Rangel tells Reich that he doesn’t have to worry about middle-class opposition to their social engineering plans for the stimulus. Why? Because they’re too busy working! It’s at the 2:33 mark of the video:
RANGEL: And one thing you can depend on, you don’t have to be worried about what the middle-class is gonna do. Things are so bad. They have to put food on their tables. Clothes for their kids. Get them in school. I think this is a tremendous opportunity for a stronger America.
Rangel wraps up by advocating that Reich “force” and “mandate” his social engineering “criteria” for stimulus spending.
So much for “post-racialism.” So much for “setting aside childish things.” The Age of Obama has resurrected the same old bean-counters.

In ‘73 seniority was changed in the steel industry because Companies and USWA were guilty of racial discrimination. With 25 yrs, I was laid off as well as a co-worker who was black. His comment then was they gave me $1200.00 and took my job. This is what happens with Libreals big plans, they hurt the people they think they’ll help and screw everybody.
Uh, why in the world is Berkeley employing a white male with a PhD when there are others with needs as well who could have that job?

*If you are a white male, a white female or just plain white, your change will not be coming. Instead it will be leaving your pocket in order to support other people who have needs. Everyone knows there are no poor, unemployed white males, white females or just plain whites in America. Poverty is a function of race, so therefore, initiatives to combat poverty will also be functions of race.
My dad, an electrical contractor, did very well doing gov’t contracts in the 80’s and early 90’s. He says it’s hard to bid on contracts now because he’s not a minority, which seems to be a requirement. When he’s confronted gov’t contracting agencies about this bull, he was told that he could get ahold of winning bidders and get work as a sub-contractor. It’s pretty insane how contracts are awarded these days.
Sounded like a hearing on “how to be a racist”… there isn’t any how, Reich and Rangel are both screaming ass RACISTS.
Wrong is gonna be right and right will always be wrong…get ready for the new status quo. How far will white people be pushed until there is really a race war. Right now, whites better be listening , your future is being planned out by a bunch of commies. If you wanna call it a future. How much racism and discrimination can you take? If we all had any sense we would walk away from our mortgages and quit our jobs. I don’t want to work for some low life that says he “deseres” a paycheck for not doing anything.

My husband, a black Republican who is in construction mgmt has dealt with the minorty contracters here in the Denver area. He has only gotten burned by them. They only want handouts, they want the contract, but don’t want to do the work that it takes to get it. When they do have the contract, they screw it up, or take off with the cash… I can’t believe this is coming out of this guys MOUTH…
WTF? This just shows how completely out of touch with reality these iditos are. Hey, dumb*ss, come to Texas and drive by ANY construction site and you will quickly see it is not white males in construction. White males were driven out long ago by illegals under cutting the wages. It is hispanics who dominate the industry. And that goes for the management as well since you must speak spanish to even enter construction around these parts. It is rare to find a white guy on a construction site unless he is the architect.

Feel good social engineering does not equal sound economics. Just look at the ineptitude of giving away homes to unqualified recipients which became an official money-making ritual of banks like CitiGroup that brought down an entire banking system. Just look at the federal employment system that has its cronyism and rewards those (cough cough relatives/minorities) with little experience. Add to that such policies as Affirmative Action and quotas that guide how diverse college and grad school populations should be.

As a white male construction worker being frozen out of good jobs by minority set asides (quotas) and illegal immigrants I’d like to bitch slap that self righteous little runt.

I told my husband the first time I heard Obama talk about his “stimulus” program to rebuild roads, etc. that it was really to try to get jobs for unemployed or poor black Americans… I also said good luck getting them to work for you. Chances are if they’ve been unemployed “long term” they’re quite content to take the monthly welfare check and sit around complaining about their lives. I also wonder if there will be something in this “stimulus” to ensure that illegal aliens don’t get employed (oh, sorry, that would probably discriminate somehow and as noted in previous posts there would be no one left to do the work).
The lunatics are running the asylum. This is full-monty communism baby and they just don’t care what anyone thinks. Middle class Americans are going to have to take action at the state and local level to combat this poison. This is an absolute nation killer if their agendas are imposed.

have you guys checked the unemployment rate lately? have you noticed huge companies like microsoft laying off employees? where are all these jobs you guys are talking about? i’m freelancing now but am seeking FT work, and i’m telling you i’ve never seen so much competition for jobs in my 25 years of working experience.
highly qualified people are applying for jobs far beneath their experience levels. where do you think that leaves the lesser-trained folks? on the outside looking in, that’s where.
the cool thing is i’ve been watching reich for years and always wished he’d have a voice in an administration.
we’ve been doing things all wrong for at least 8 years. it’s time for a change, as painful as it apparently is for most of you.

Where are your complaints about affirmative action? Why do the unqualified and untrustworthy get jobs over those who fit the bill? Or are those jobs just reserved for Obummer appointees?
Where was your concern (and that of other liberals) for military spouses over the years who have had trouble finding jobs? Why is it that well-qualified military spouses (with either bachelor’s or advanced degrees) couldn’t find jobs during the tech age, or the housing bubbles, or the other unsustainable booms the last 50 years?
Making excuses for bad policies doesn’t change the fact that they’re BAD POLICIES. Do you honestly want to travel over a bridge that some unqualified loafer built just because the federal government feels sorry for them and hands out jobs like they’re candy? What about your concern at the illegal invasion of the construction history where there are many houses that aren’t built with the high quality and time that customers are expecting?

Am I wrong in seeing that America is being broken into 2 major factions? The 1st is being taken for a ride by government (taxpayers, businesses, seemingly anyone with an education) and the 2nd lines up for goodies provided by the 1st. And the government is behind it all. The government is pitting us against each other. There’s no unity. I’d love to tell the government to stick it and just go ahead and do what I need to get by. But I have to “share the wealth”, don’t I?
It will be interersting to see how many of the droopy drawer thugs and welfare mooches actually want to “work” even if it is at Obama/Rangel’s insistence. Just like it will be interesting to see how many of them become one of Michelle O’s volunteers. History tells us they’ll opt out for welfare and watching Oprah. They are nothing but blisters. As someone previously noted, these black/minority construction firms did shoddy or NO work once they got their payments. Buildings were caving in due to cheap/insufficient concrete use because the companies had ZERO experience/knowledge in engineering specs, roadways were having to be repaved (by different firms) because they were tearing up … it was generally a mess. But hey – Sharpton and his homies got their, and Rangel too, so big deal! It’s only money, right? Just tax whitey more to cover it, yo!

Yeh, theres no guarantee of a job. i have a college degree, Ive worked on multiple graduate degrees and am about to start another one, the largest companies in the US (from the Fortune 1 on down) are my customers, Ive started my own company, Ive raised 3 kids.
Within the past few years that didnt stop me from being unemployed and overqualified. Completely broke from my ex-wifes attorney locking down every one of my financial accounts. I couldnt even get the exact same truck loading job that I had back in college. I even voluntarily gave up my monthly military disability pension.
I would spend 30 minutes on the toilet paper aisle at Wal-Mart because a) I didnt have any money and b) I had nothing to do with my time.
But not ONCE did I steal toilet paper OR take a dime of unemployment.
How old are you anyway? We’ve been doing things wrong the last 8 years????? wtf were you before that? There are things called cycles. You cant run full-steam at low employment rates forever. Just to use the Ponzi scheme as an example, eventually everthing crumbles and you start over.

Yes, I own one of those worthless wonders outside Dallas which I’m convinced was built by cheap labor. The home was previously owned but the home inspector failed to notice that more than one outside wall has absolutely no insulation. The heating & cooling bills run from $300 to $550 a month. Now then, we also have a small place up near the Canadian border and the bills have never run more than $160 a month, and that’s during sub-zero weather for days on end! You get what you pay for in either goods or services. I wanted to retch listening to the esteemed Mr. Reich and he’s only a precurser of what’s to come. I can’t wait to see if any legal group will go after this should it become practice. If not, yea, it’s time to make some hard decisions.

I thought Robert Reich, in his views and his demeanor, was the worst punchline of the Clinton years. Since this administration is shaping up to be Clinton’s 3rd term, it figures we’d be hearing from him again.
Words just can’t express the sheer insanity of the clip. Reich worrying that too much money will go to white male workers (not that he has anything against that) and Rangel reassuring him the middle class is too preoccupied to oppose any quota-based initiative …
The barbarians are at the gates. We are near to legislating that a majority of voters have a financial stake in keeping entitlements higher and higher and that the percentage of people who pay taxes, or people who care about how the tax money is spent, keeps getting smaller and smaller.
The precipice before us is so dark and deep, I can only pray we do not leap into that awful abyss.

It’s quite obvious that Obama is obsessed with power and has no interest or expertise in really helping the American people. He went from a “nobody” to POTUS in record time, using the MSM as a “useful idiot” to attain his goals. Now that he sits in the Oval Office, he will do whatever he wants to, as long as Reid and Pelosi agree. I, personally, think he’s “bitten off more than he can chew”. His cabinet choices were terrible. The seat in the WH was hardly warm, before he was issuing orders to change everything. I doubt he will be so popular this time next year, once reality sinks in that he isn’t much of a “messiah”, rescuing us from our “mistakes”.

We have had minority set aside programs for many years, and the Democrats were responsible for the all too often poor results. As a retired government employee, I had to contract with many of the set aside firms, and often the only way you could be sure that you would get someone competent was by word of mouth. Many times, the set aside was really tokenism — you would have a small business president who was black, female, etc and the rest of the company was white. You can see the scam without having to look very hard.
I remember one instance of a guy who was 1/8th Cherokee and 7/8 white. He was considered to be of Indian heritage and therefore could be considered a minority for the purpose of set aside. Fortunately, he was competent but this was not always the case.
Frankly, these liberally inspired programs are simply stupid and demonstrate to anyone who can actually think just how flawed liberalism and socialism is. Reich is merely stating that he is as stupid as the rest of the liberals.
Does Reich really think that just because Obama wills it that fifth generation welfare swillers are going to stagger off of their sofa and come to work on bridges for less money than they’re getting now?

FYI, right next door to my local carbon-credit store, I’m going to open a I’m-not-a-minority-credit store. That way, skilled white males can buy credits that entitle them to infrastructure stimulus-palooza jobs. That money then would get funneled directly to the “long-term unemployed” who get paid to do what they do best – nothing. The work gets done right and everyone feels safe driving over all bridges. Everyone’s happy.

Stupid is as stupid does. I warned about this in a post from 3 months ago. Todays dems are using the White working class vote in the same way they used the black vote in the past. The tradesmen in electrical, pipefitting, plumbing, and sheetmetal trades are still pretty much White. Not for long, the neo-racists will use the Dept of Labor to dumb down the requirement for apprenticeship entry. No more legacy appointments.
