Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan is like one of those toxic packages traded by bankers: it camouflages many unaffordable gifts to his client state. With a federal deficit already at $1.2 trillion, Obama wants to squander $825 billion (which will undoubtedly mushroom to more than $1 trillion) on creating 600,000 more government jobs and a further 459,000 in “green energy” (useless wind turbines and other Heath-Robinson contraptions favoured by Beltway environmentalists).
It is frightening to think there is a real possibility that the entire world economy could go into complete meltdown and famine kill millions. Yet Western – and British – commentators are cocooned in a warm comfort zone of infatuation with America’s answer to Neil Kinnock. We should be long past applauding politicians of any hue: they got us into this mess. The best deserve a probationary opportunity to prove themselves, the worst should be in jail.

Life begins at conception is a religious belief, not supported by science. Most of us accept brain death as a reason to discontinue life support. Well, a fertilized egg has no brain, that is as brain dead as is possible to get. I don’t support partial birth abortion, I agree it is murder. I think abortion should be allowed only when there is no brain activity. Once there is, the fetus should be protected.
Here’s a thought – maybe it should be a state’s rights issue.
I’m sorry to say that so much has been invested in getting Obama elected that remorse will never set in for his most ardent supporters – especially the media. Jesus said that the poor will be with us always. He said this to illustrate that if we look to Him and concentrate on His Word we have the means to evangelize the world. The world can only be save through Jesus. You can do nothing on your own to save this world but you can do all thing through Christ who strengthens you. Just believe.

I am not religious either and I too think population growth is a ticking time bomb. but I have to say your idea of when life starts is a little narrow minded. Is a sperm not alive- not in the human being sense but it does swim with a determined purpose to the egg and then joins with it to begin the human building process. Is that less alive than a tree? I know it makes it easier to kill a fetus if you convince yourself it is not human. Try thinking of it as a very early life form that evolves at a rapid rate. Or just keep telling yourself that killing babies is okay because it is convenient and you have more stuff to accumulate. Your selfishness is incredible.
It will happen. It might not be face to face, but it will happen.

This thread has been interesting. I read the opinion piece a while back when it first came out. Excellent, even brilliant, piece. It is full of excellent observations of the problems we will face.
Yet, with all that, this thread has focused almost exclusively on abortion and religion. I think it is a great indication of the enormous divide between the various groups on the non-collectivist side of the aisle.
The collectivists are united behind one over-riding philosophy of big government and collectivism. On the other side, the one that sides with freedom, liberty and personal responsibility, we have people who believe in 95% of the same thing but are torn asunder by one issue or another. The left has its own divisions but they suppress them in order to win. We take a 5% issue and proclaim it incontestable. I don’t see this changing. Too bad. It will keep the collectivists in power until a solution is found.

Sorry but I don’t believe you’re a libertarian, and I know you’re not a history major. The Conservation movement in America is ALL conservative. While the Sierra club weeps loudly over unsuccessful species that prove Darwin right daily, it’s conservatives that are the true conservators of nature. Hundreds of millions of acres of America are being cared for by conservatives: farmers, ranchers, loggers. These are men and women who know much better than you how important nature conservancy is to the well being of mankind.
They also understand that past generations killed off needed predators and how important it is for man to fill that slot, yet we’re held up to ridicule as part of the Democrats platform to rid America of gun ownership.

It’s not the conservatives that are doing everything they can to insure that every light socket in America becomes a toxic waste site. That’s the liberal green movement that’s trying to insure that every safe, clean burning lightbulb in America is replaced with eyestrain inducing, mercury containing florescent bulbs which the EPA describes as “Toxic time bombs”
It’s not the conservative that are actively preventing America from using the cleanest safest abundant source of energy: nuclear. It’s the liberal green movement that is blocking not only the implementation of nuclear power but blocking every effort to improve safety and reliability.
It’s not the conservatives that are working hard to insure that the world freezes to death in the coming mini ice age, it’s the liberal green movement that is working their damnedest to insure the coal industry is shut down. They even have a meat puppet in the White House to do their bidding.
It’s not the Conservatives that are lying to the world about CO2 emissions, it’s the liberal green movement who shriek and cry that mankind is putting 30 gigatons of CO2 into the atmosphere annualy but at the same time steadfastly refuse to admit that the biosphere produces 550 gigatons annually so mankinds contribution is less than 0.05% of all CO2 produced and if mankind stopped producing CO2 – to include holding our breaths – there would be absolutely no noticeable change what so ever.
If you want humanity to survive you had better find a new planet to live on, because the true new rulers of the United States, George Soros and Zbigenew Brzezinski, are going to start WWIII (not WWIV Zbig you moron) to keep their hands on the power. More and more eviro-centric groups are waking up to the truth that bio fuel will do very little to change CO2 emission but is CERTAIN to contribute to worldwide starvation.
I have come around to think that the actual socialist leaders at the top, ones like BHO or Al Gore, Soros, et al, actually not only know that is true – THEY WANT THAT!
They WANT to starve the third world by forcing rich countries like ours to burn food in our cars thus pricing food right out of the mouths of third world people.

Some farmers do not help the environment, they use poisons, they destroy wetlands and native species.
There are significantly higher levels of methane (far worse than CO2) and CO2 in the atmosphere, and I don’t believe anyone fully understands exactly how much we can alter the environment without causing irreparable and significant damage, so why risk doing so when we can avoid it? I agree nuclear energy is green – as long as the waste can be safely stored in perpetuity. Energy conservation is better, no risks with it.
I also agree that some liberals and greens themselves suffer from conditioning, of the environmentally correct kind, and don’t truly understand the big picture – e.g. the environmental damage and pollutants created by construction of hybrid cars and their batteries, and yes – the disposal of fluorescent bulbs with their mercury. They claim to be environmentalists, yet allow mass immigration of people from high birthrate cultures, and the enormous population growth we will suffer from that will further damage the environment and diminish our limited resources.
Coal burning releases many pollutants into the environment – including mercury and radioactivity. Best to avoid it if possible.
I’m calling bullcrap on that one. There is absolutey enough resources for the planet to sustain the population. The problem is lack of distribution systems, corruption, pricing and probably lots more reasons I’m not aware of. How much food is NOT grown in the US and Europe each year to keep food prices stable? How many farmers are paid NOT to use their land? How many poor nations are run by corrupt tyrants who care not for their populations, steal food/medical aid, put no money into developing their own resources, spend their GDP on their military, and drive their nations from “breadbaskets” to “dirt bowls” (I’m looking at you, Mugabe)?
Certain areas may be “overpopulated” because the gov’t or economic conditions can’t support more than a certain amount of people. But it doesn’t necessarily follow that the Earth as a whole cannot support a large population. Mass starvation comes from man-made reasons, not natural ones.
Rid the world of greed and corruption and prosperity will reach more people. I know, I know, tall order.
Mattymatt10 makes some excellent points. The reason for famine lies with the form of government of that area.
This planet has ample resources for a lot more people. I don’t think, with free markets, we are even close to a limit.
Besides, what small thinkers some people are. We have an entire universe out there at our disposal. The only limits are the ones our minds allow.

What needs to happen in 2012 is for the Republicans to grow a pair and demand that conservatives be the moderators of the presidential debates. In as much as socialists have been the moderators for the past 30 years.
