Contraceptive funding thrown under Obama’s bus
Goody. Panicky President Obama wants the Dems to eliminate Pelosi’s pet contraceptive funding from the Generational Theft Act of 2009. Only $800 billion more in needless, unstimulating stimulus spending to kill.
The left-wing blogs are having a snit fit.
It’s a start:
House Democrats are likely to jettison family planning funds for the low-income from an $825 billion economic stimulus bill, officials said late Monday, following a personal appeal from President Barack Obama at a time the administration is courting Republican critics of the legislation.
Several officials said a final decision was expected on Tuesday, coinciding with Obama’s scheduled visit to the Capitol for separate meetings with House and Senate Republicans.
The provision has emerged as a point of contention among Republicans, who criticize it as an example of wasteful spending that would neither create jobs nor otherwise improve the economy.
Under the provision, states no longer would be required to obtain federal permission to offer family planning services — including contraceptives — under Medicaid, the health program for the low-income.
Democrats considered the politically-potent change as congressional budget experts estimated it would take slightly longer for the overall legislation to achieve an impact on the economy than the administration projects…
…Several Democrats said Monday night that Obama had spoken personally with Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., about removing the provision. Waxman is chairman of the committee with jurisdiction over Medicaid and a close ally of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
The Democrats who described the likely reversal did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to disclose developments not yet made public.
Obama’s request to House Democrats underscores the administration’s desire to signal a spirit of bipartisanship, a recurring theme for the president in his first week in office.

Credit is due, and we owe it to Obama, whatever the reason, to smacking down this crap. I’m guessing the war room folks saw the potental fallout and said, “We don’t need this” one week into a new administration.
Kind of contrasts with that “I won” BS from last week, doesn’t it? Telling Republicans to shut up since the electorate is behind him didn’t negate the fact he still needs them for this still-suspect spending bill.
I’m also curious to see what he’ll say in his first official interview to Al-Arabiya. Oh, how MSNBC and WaPo must hate that coup.

The smart money is that this will go back in when the Generational Theft Act goes to conference. After all, abortion is what unites the Left (that, and undying hatred of those that don’t give them 110% fealty).
Also, this does leave Pelosi with some egg on the face after her publicized defense of the addition followed by Obama’s personal admonition that the language be dropped. Cause of friction between a newbie President and a seasoned Speaker for the direction of the party and nation? We’ll see.

I’m not sure I saw this mentioned above, but last night I saw a clip of Pelosi’s interview with Georgie S. on TV at least three times. And she looked absolutely idiotic trying to justify this part of the bill as an effort to help states “cut costs.” You could see it in her words, facial expressions, and body language: “George, you have me here. But I have to give you some hokey explanation to justify this unjustifiable waste of taxpayer money for a pet constituency of mine.”
I still can’t figure out what the heck she was thinking in the first place! It must be something in the water over there.
I watched a clip of the interview with Stephanopolous and I just can’t believe Obama would strike this critical stimulus package component, especially after her impassioned, informed and concise detailing of the magnitude of impact it would have in turning around the faltering economy.
Throw scrawny Nancy under the bus too. She’ll break like a twig and we won’t even feel a bump.
Reluctant conservatives are not need for the passage of this bill. The fact is folks, is they what political cover ,because they know it will cause financial havoc.
Better yet, “George, I’ll pretend to try and baffle ‘em with bullsh!t and you pretend to be buying it.”
Remember Nancy is third in line for the presidency.

This is the least offensive part of the entire bill. It does not create any new spending, but simply streamlines spending that already exists. If it wasn’t for the fact that it’s contraceptives, no one would be upset.

I’ll one-up, you. It’s depressing to BE the fifth child of a woman who went on to be a director of a family-planning clinic in central L.A. (i.e. serving East L.A. and South Central L.A. — those of you who live in L.A. know which ethnic groups reside in those two areas), and to hear her eventually move on to advocate introducing contraceptive chemicals into the domestic water supplies if ‘those people’ couldn’t keep from getting pregnant.

But, it did convince me — at, perhaps, an earlier age than I would have, otherwise, of the moral bankruptcy of the left.

Every discussion I’ve ever had with a leftist on abortion will sooner or later include the lefty making the argument that abortion keeps down the population of “those people.”
This is good. I too believe Pelosi’s Murder a Child Act will be back-and I really doubt ANYONE thought it was only about contraception- but watching Lefties have a snit fit is good.

Because “reproductive freedom” to them means that they can have sex with whomever, whatever, whenever and wherever they please. Without consequence.
However, in my encounters with liberals, every single one of them dislikes women like, say, Michelle Duggar, who expresses her reproductive freedom by having a big family. The Duggars are “too extreme”, etc., etc.

Mark Steyn wrote in “America Alone” that Muslims will ultimately win because of their higher birth rate. The United States has a chance because red state people and especially immigrants are reproducing relatively rapidly.
Nancy Pelosi reinforces my perception of her as a dangerous fool. Baby boomers are beginning to collect Social Security. Who will pay the bills if we don’t have a large supply of young workers? The Russians have had holidays and offer gifts to couples who have children. Italians and Japanese are considering the same.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this was sacrificed for the moment just to disarm Republican critics of the bill. If they are narrowly focused on single provisions rather than the entire concept of the bailout/stimulus/pork bill, they’ll soon find themselves running out of reasons not to support it, and give the Democrats the political cover they are so obviously craving. The much heralded meeting with the monument to affirmative action run amok is first and foremost to give them that political cover come 2010. Of course, they already are pretty much disarmed thanks to Bush the Stupid Socialist.

Spending bills are for the fall. This type of thing should not be happening now AT ALL.

Here’s the irony of Nan’s Plan: The Liberals support massive government spending on the poor, WIC, SCHIP, Medicaid, food stamps, public housing, free lunch programs, etc. When the poor respond to these incentives by having children they otherwise couldn’t afford, the Libs want to offer them “family planning services”, aka abortions to relieve themselves of the burden of the children they had no disincentives not to have.
Prosperity results in smaller families. Subsidies result in larger ones. If the Libs want to encourage the poor to have fewer children and save a bunch of money then they ought to end all programs for the poor.
