GOP: Time to Get Things Undone

President Obama thinks he knows what the primary objective of Republicans in Washington should be: To “get things done.” Bashing Rush Limbaugh last week, Obama urged GOP lawmakers to ignore the voices of obstructionism and sign on to his behemoth stimulus package: “We shouldn’t let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done.” Meeting with GOP leaders on Tuesday, Obama repeated his entreaty: “I don’t expect 100 percent agreement from my Republican colleagues, but I do hope that we can all put politics aside and do the American people’s business right now.”
Since when did it become the Republican Party’s top priority to “get things done?” It was as annoying a campaign platitude when John McCain adopted it as it is now coming from President Obama’s lips. History has shown us that “Get Things Done” is mindless liberal code for passing ineffective legislation and expanding government for government’s sake. “Reaching across the political aisle” and “putting politics aside” always entail selling out the right and putting conservative principles aside. How about preventing the damage done by Democrat meddlers trying to get their “things done?” How about getting more things undone?
For the past year, I’ve chronicled the inevitable lard-up of bipartisan bailouts and stimulus boondoggles — and the predictable Chicken Little dance in Washington when these massive emergency “fixes” have fallen short. Contrary to the belief that President Obama is America’s Lightworker who can defy political gravity, H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 guarantees more of the same old borrow-spend-panic-repeat cycle that got us into our current mess in the first place. This is not an investment in America’s future. It’s an unprecedented mortgaging of America’s future — which is why the bill is forever known in my book as the Generational Theft Act of 2009.
The ruckus over Nancy Pelosi’s contraception funding (stripped Tuesday night by the House Rules committee along with the $200 million to refurbish the National Mall) is the tip of the iceberg. Despite President Obama’s vow to prevent earmarks from bogging down the bill, the package is stuffed with goodies for every special interest group from left-wing fraudsters ACORN and other subprime shakedown activists ($4 billion for “neighborhood stabilization”) to Hollywood ($246 million in new targeted tax breaks) to universal health care promotion ($600 million) to dubious “green job” projects ($24 billion). More fundamentally, there is no there there.
On Monday night, the Congressional Budget Office sent out a full analysis of the House stimulus bill — elaborating on the partial number-crunching that were disseminated last week by Republican Hill sources. The new report elaborates on what the first one illuminated: the vaunted infrastructure spending will take years and years and years to kick in. Just 7 percent of the total $800 billion-plus stimulus funding would enter the economy by the end of this year.
The non-partisan CBO tells eternal truths about government spending in the past, present, and future:
Frequently in the past, in all types of federal programs, a noticeable lag has occurred between sharp increases in budget authority and the resulting increases in outlays. Based on such experiences, CBO expects that federal agencies, along with states and other recipients of that funding, would find it difficult to properly manage and oversee a rapid expansion of existing programs so as to expend the added funds as quickly as they expend the resources provided for their ongoing programs.
…Brand new programs pose additional challenges. Developing procedures and criteria, issuing the necessary regulations, and reviewing plans and proposals would make distributing money quickly even more difficult—as can be seen, for example, in the lack of any disbursements to date under the loan programs established for automakers last summer to invest in producing energy-efficient vehicles. Throughout the federal government, spending for new programs has frequently been slower than expected and rarely been faster.
Translation: They can’t spend the stimulus money fast enough to actually stimulate anything other than campaign coffers, media buzz, and bureaucratic paperwork. President Obama asserted that there is no disagreement on the need to Do Something. He’s wrong. Two hundred economists spoke up this week in an open letter disseminated by the libertarian Cato Institute: “More government spending by Hoover and Roosevelt did not pull the United States economy out of the Great Depression in the 1930s,” they said. “More government spending did not solve Japan’s ‘lost decade’ in the 1990s. As such, it is a triumph of hope over experience to believe that more government spending will help the U.S. today.”
And that must be the message of gimlet-eyed fiscal conservatives in Washington who should wear the “obstructionist” badge proudly. Obstructionism in the name of fiscal sanity is no vice. Panicked profligacy in the name of blind bipartisanship is no virtue.

every time I read or hear the words “president obama” I get a sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach…why is that?
Why is that? It seems the price has been rising consistently, and a National Geographic article last month said that the supply is getting harder to find.
Watch how the stock markets respond to this spending.
The time to buy gold was when it was at $300 an ounce! You can’t invest for what’s happening now. Do your research by looking back. History will give you some idea of what to do!
Craig Crawford on the First Seven Days of Obama Administration is everything fixed yet?
http://youhavetobethistalltogoonthisride.blogspot.com/2009/01/craig-crawford-i-fav-seven-days-in-are.html
Well my stocks have been “somewhat” hammered. And looking at history and comparing it to where we are now, Its not looking good.
100,000,000 dollar bread in a few years? Its not impossiable.
You are about to vomit.
mattymatt10. Gold has not risen consistently. It goes up and down in value like anything else. It also goes up or down in anticipation of future things. The price is already factoring in inflation. Go back and see the price in the late 70’s and in the 80’s.
Lamar Smith – got through.
Cornyn – Phone bank busy.
Hutchison – Busy.
All my reps voted for the bailout when Bush was in office, if they vote for this one, so help me God they will regret it this time!!
This may sound like a stupid question, but how do I find out who my representatives are for my district?
Well gold is at about 900 right now, it was at over 1000.
Gold and silver prices have tracked roughly at the same rate. The only advantage to silver is that it has a low investment cost per unit. It is a back stop sort or investment. It probably will not make you millions, except if everything goes to crap. Then it may be what saves you.
Elections have consequences. The libs have majorities in the House and the Senate, and a marxist in the WH. Why? Because Bush acted like a Dem, at least on domestic issues, and conservatives (rightfully) gave up on him, and McFraud. Now we are relegated to “bomb throwing” to block legislation just like the “old” days before Gingrich’s contract with America. We gave the fascist libs power and now they are using it>>> Petitions against Rush Limbaugh, the insanely named “Fairness Doctrine”, etc. We get what we ask for. If Bush had stuck with conservative principles, perhaps we wouldn’t be in this mess. If Republican politicians who also knew that this economic catstrophe was going to happen, had done their jobs, we wouldn’t be in this mess. Both parties have sold the people out. The only difference is that with Dems, it is expected; with Republicans, it still smacks bitterly of betrayal.
If you read all my posts, you’ll see that I have acknowledged that. With the stimulus package, they’re basically shifting future spending by the private sector to current spending by the public sector. Of course there are costs of doing this (it’s less efficient, there will be less spending in the future). There also might be benefits (ending the recession quicker, causing it to be less extreme). You have to weigh which you care about more.
This reminds me of an example used to show the difference between causation and correlation. The larger the fire, the more firefighters that are present. Does that mean that the firefighters caused the fire to get worse? of course not.
Some of us have lives outside of MM comment area. Also, I don’t particularly like arguing with you because when you lose an argument, you just start talking about how rich you are and how many degrees you have.
MNUSMCDavid (#41) has the best post so far–he has a very good understanding of our Constitution and how it is intended to work.
***
History is a very important guide–I am reading William J. Bennett’s AMERICA–THE LAST BEST HOPE book now–it is very strong on how we got our 3 branches of government. And how George Washington and Benjamin Franklin had a lot to do with the Constitution.
***
Let’s hear it for the Marines and U.S. Military–defending our Constitution and country. Thank You.

There is the chance that they will. We have to stop very specific things here. (which is why I don’t have my nose out of joint about Obama’s tax evading Treasury secretary being confirmed, etc.) This disgusting bankruptcy plan, union card check, amnesty and socializing medicine are some of the lines
conservativesdecent Americans need to be drawing IMHO.Yes they do, lets knock it out of their hands.
(Fast forward 6 months and there is William Grant looking incredibly stupid being the only one standing outside of the capital with a pitchfork in one hand and torch in the other as crickets chirp in the background… This is why the democrats are in charge, they aren’t afraid to make a pain in the ass out of themselves.)
Not much of a solution. Would it kill you to make a few phone calls before you start buying copper futures?
I’m not sure what it is with Washington, sbw, but perfectly devout conservatives seem to catch some sort of liberal disease as soon as they get to Congress. Bush started out strong, and gave me great hope for our country, but then started pandering to the libtard agenda, and went down in flames the last 4 years. Now, it seems all the other repubs are following in his footsteps, and not standing up for what they believe in. I just wonder if any them still believe in the values and morals (ie: conservative values) that I believe in at this point. If so, you couldn’t tell by their inaction.
I do that anyway.
My representative is Jean Schmidt, Republican from the eastside of Cincinnati. I was told that she would NOT be voting for this bill.
I have given up on that turd Voinovich after I read that he voted for Geithner.
I for one am not going to hold my tounge about this “first black president” joker. I see no reason do buy into his (and his handlers) agendas. Neither should any Republican.
El Rushbo is 100% dead on correct…

Thank you.
I called Chellie Pingree, super lib, and talked to her assistant.
He asked for my address so they can send me a response. I told him I’d give it to him but I already knew it would be nothing more than a bunch of psychobabble telling me why Ms. Pingree voted for it.
He laughed. He thought it was funny and I’m right.
I asked him what about the campaign promises to cut spending.
She’ll vote for it but I did what’s right.
I called Mike Michaud even though he’s not from my district. He voted against the bailout so there’s hope there even though he’s a dem.
At least they’ll know we don’t buy anything they’re trying to sell.
And that is a big part of the problem. The federal government now has over 50 trillion in “promises” coming due in the next few decades. You can spend money you don’t have for only so long until the bill comes due. We are WAY past the point of insolvency. The money is simply not there. It is not there now and it won’t be there in the future – the “future” money has already been spent.
Bill Grant, I do all I can, but I don’t see it changing anything because washington is not listening. If we follow this path that obama and his minions have set, I see a dark future ahead that will take alot of work to get out of. I am only HOPEING at this point that it will not require more military type action, but the history of it doesn’t look good.
Quite true. I think conservatives are just looking out for their own jobs right now, and that doesnt bode well for the rest of us. We have a dual meltdown of morality and responsibility by our Republican politicians, and by Wall Street. It seems that nobody plays it straight anymore. I just have no confidence in our leaders anymore.
I’ve called Rep Driehaus, Sens Voinovich and Brown. Waited long to comment, I’d say the phones are very busy.
My 6th grade teacher prophesied this to us back in the mid-60s. He knew how the communists would attack us. He was right. Schools, courts, popular culture. Senor Gramsci and his minions are due to have a rude awakening.
It is hard to get geared up to fight when you know your party is in bed with Obama. The invisible man, Mike Duncan, is about to win another term as chair of the RNC.
Maybe it is time for Atlas to shrug.
You would have a whole lot more confidence, Wall Street complicity notwithstanding, had the Democrats in Congress (over the last 20 years) not engaged in a $4 1/2 trillion subprime theft-by-conversion scam on the American middle class. That loss touches conservatives and liberals alike.
What historical data do you base that statement on?
The more information I see from Michelle the more I think I am looking at the Congressional equivalent of Girls Gone Wild. This is just so nonsensical.
These people are truly fiddling while Rome burns. Rational thought is just nowhere to be found in D.C.
This is no time for rational thought, this is a crisis!
Amen to that!
I point out my wealth as an example of what can happen if conservative policies are applied and not as a means of provocation.

Interesting example but it fails to persuade, because you’re not really addressing the heart of what you advocate or what we (as conservatives) advocate.
Boiled down, you advocate collectivism (Man exists to serve the State), and we advocate individualism (the State exists as a necessary evil to serve Man).
Every time a country practices collectivism (no matter the flavor or strength) it suffers an economic downturn, a drop in GDP, a reduction of living standards. Russia, France, Sweden, China… name your prison.
Why?
Because slaves will always hate the chains you put on them, no matter how you gild them.
Gild them in eloquence of compassion to fellow man, gild them in the common good, gild them in saving the economy. Make them light chains so they’re barely felt – doesn’t matter.
Even if they don’t realize that they are slaves, they will still laze around your State-owned plantation. And still hate your guts.

Never, ever apologize for generating wealth. Collectivists always use wealth guilt as an “introduction drug” to full-blown psychological chains.
I found about a dozen jobs in the bill that will be created. All making $150K or more and all presidential appointees. Just more pay for play.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch: Holder makes it out of committee on a 17-2 vote.
Have we really gotten to the sad point in our country where we have to explain to people just WHY it is that socialism/communism is bad for us? I thought everybody already knew that it was evil…but then again, I also thought my country was founded on Christian principles, but that seems to be a thing of the past as well.

Yes they are, just not to the right. One of the main reasons is that the left CAN get the phone lines jammed and they don’t insist on getting 100% of what they are after before they will contribute money or get off the couch to vote. The left has organized into unions and Acorn’s and Moveon’s and Kossaks which have perverted the media and the educational system into a cohesive system of getting their own way. This didn’t happen over night but it has happened and the main reason that it has happened is that the right has been OUT WORKED. In that sense even though they are going to be a disaster they have earned the right to have more of a say than the people around here who just call each other RINO’s.
Well, from what I saw in the last election through today “a lot of work” is out of the question.
Hmm – I don’t think many of those phone numbers are correct. They are 11 digit numbers not 10 digit numbers.
I was just at Barnes & Noble. How long will the public have to view the Obamas on every magazine? How sickening. He was elected not canonized. I spent time reading a book about what caused the morgage meltdown. Obama and congress are not prepared for the consequences from the bailout and stimulus packages. Both are a roadmap for economic disaster.
Dasher, that’s just the number. If you read above, it says the area code is 202. The last 4 numbers are room numbers. The columns don’t align very well, so it’s kind of hard to tell.
Great article, Michelle. It’s obvious this bill is a major power grab by the Dems, increase government spending and programs, with a couple of sweeteners for the GOP thrown in to get them on board. Once all these allocations are given, does anyone here think that they are a one-off payment? Of course, we’ll have to increase their budgets every year from hereon, they can’t possibly exist on the same budget, year after year. This bill is the beginning of a vast transfer of wealth from us schmucks to the Government, which will increase year after year after year. I say, let the Dems own this one, any Republican that signs on to this, your name will be noted for the future.

Yes. You can thank 30-40 years of educational efforts by people like Bill Ayers, Saul Alinsky, Barak Obama… etc.
The other disturbing part is this bill so full of programs that people who vote against it will then be accused of voting against something that by itself looks like a good idea. For example, say this bill includes 200 mil for health clinics and Joe Republican votes against the bill. When Joe runs for reelection, his Dem challenger will run commercials saying he voted against health clinics.
This is not about stimulus this is about using the economic crisis and fear along with the misguided notion by many that Obama can solve the world’s problems to establish extensive govt control. Once the govt creates a program it never goes away. Once a job becomes a govt job it stays there. Rush was right, this about extending the power of the Dem party not helping the country.
Perfectly said.
Ah, my first call to my new congressman, Pete Olson.
I’ve already written letters to him via numbersusa.com, but the phone call is always personal.
Wrong number for Lloyd Doggett, TX 25th. Try this one:
202-225-4865
or
1-866-916-5921
I made the call. Be nice but be firm. Vote no.
fixed.
Has anyone ever succeeded in convincing politicians to stop spending money?
I AM Santa Clause in this family as long as there are little believers
Just the Grim Reaper, but he does do it well.

9 Dem No’s
Mostly for people who don’t pay taxes anyway. That’s called “redistribution of wealth.”
ECS
“Don’t get on top’s bad side!”
“Don’t let that smoke get on you!”
The kids in now don’t know what they’ve missed and are probably d***ed glad of it.

And, if push comes to shove, you can cast bullets with them.

They pay taxes. They just don’t pay income taxes.
They work well against werewolves, but don’t do much for the zombie threat.
Do we really need more billions to “stimulate” these government workers hard at work at the NSF?
And yes, the pun is intended.
If toll calls are beyond your budget, try some of these:
Call Capitol Hill Switchboard TOLL FREE:
1-877 851-6437
1-800 828-0498
1-866 340-9281
1-866 338-1015
1-866 220-0044
Called Jim Cooper D-TN (tried to vote him out!!) and they were very nice. I told the phone answerer I understood he would get some “peer pressure” in DC but imagine the “pressure” he will get at home if he votes for this atrocity. I then asked if she thought spending all this money (I gave examples) was a good idea and all she could do was laugh and say “No Ma’am”. I doubt he will listen, he is one of those supposed “conservative” Dems who always votes with his party. Hopefully we get rid of him SOON!
The smartest thing for the Republicans to do is hold firm and oppose all the liberal spending, etc. bills that come up in the senate and congress. Actually, they should oppose any and all legislation supported by the majority of democrats. This is a wonderful opportunity for Republicans. Let the monkey be on the dems back as it surely will and let the republicans hands be clean! Then, when Obama’s administration and the kookoo congress run by Pelosi and Reid emplode as it will..let the blame the liberals try and throw to everyone else rest soley on them.
please everyone, go go here and send faxes or call – not only is the “stimulus” **bad** they are trying to ensure it is open to all the illegals to get the gravy—as Roy calls it, it is wild west in the Congress

Ah yes, ignore considered discussion concerning your philosophy (collectivism) versus conservatism, as was posted above, and pick at a strawman.
Most collectivists in the U.S. are cowardly slave masters. They’re the kind that are too afraid to enslave people with their own guns. They have to use the federal government and do it once removed, through the IRS. Through the media. Through “compassion.”
Grow a pair and start taking private property yourself with a shotgun and a mob, like they did in Russia, Cuba, China…
They pay taxes. They just don’t pay income taxes.
No, they don’t pay taxes – they pay into social security. Which is supposed to be used to fund their retirement – just like the rest of us. If you give it back to them now, what are we using to fund Social Security? Well, besides the extra money we’re going to take from those earning over $100k. (Which means that they should technically receive a higher payout at retirement – having put in more).
It’s income redistribution and you know it.
It’s also why I’m going to stay home when my baby is born. Better for us to get by on one income and pay fewer taxes then pay for day care or a nanny. Course it’s two fewer people being productive tax paying earners in society (me and the nanny) – but hey – I might as well get in line for my tax cut…right?
If they don’t pay any taxes, they how come they get the same money as I will? I sure as hell pay taxes. It seems to me I would be better off not working as hard.
Patronedheart, I did not notice if you got the info you asked for, if not here is a good site for congressional activity:
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/directory/congdir.tt
Dina Titus from NV..
the number is no longer valid
I’m making phone calls and the lines are NOT melting–GET ON THE PHONES NOW AND CALL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM AND DON’T STOP.
If you find an invalid number go to http://www.house.gov and you can find the reps name and correct phone number.
Patronedheart, as you said, you should do some researching into precious metals, I myself deal with Swiss America. I invested in gold, numismatic coins, not only do they have gold value but collectors deal with them, a substantial part of their value, approximately 45% of the cost at the present. Coins also have tax advantages over bullion.
All investments are good or bad depends on where and when you get in and out, right?
Good Luck!
I just see metals as a backstop if all else fails. They should retain relative value even in hyper-inflation.
I love calling a Senator’s office, hearing young women chuckling in the background, including the woman with whom I am speaking, and receiving a disdainful response (tone and voice inflections always give the person away) upon my request that Sen. Dick Durbin vote against this bill based upon his lacking of Constitutional authority to implement this into law.
I only wish that Michigan would annex Chicago at some point.
Do you mean Wisconsin?
I know Michigan likes to jump borders with the U.P. and all, but …
Seeing the government as a tool to correct market failures is not collectivist thinking. It’s pragmatic.
I understand that you’re using hyperbole to illicit a response (and it worked), but it’s still quite ridiculous.
I called Michelle. I love my Congressman’s office. She took all my information and really made it feel like they were valuing my input.
I may write them a letter just to say “good job taking my call!”
I just called Ron Klein’s office. The guy said he hasn’t stated a position on the bill yet, so I let him know my opinion.
Given that Klein’s a die hard Dem, I suspect he may realize this is a loser of an idea and is unwilling to commit until Nancy tells him to.
If they don’t pay income taxes why should my income taxes go to them in a government handout that Da One calls a tax cut?
ECS
Do you have a reputable source for your ingots that you’d be willing to share?
Believe it or not, they’re not easy to find.
Because our goal is to stimulate the economy, and tax cuts stimulate the economy. Also, the poorer you are, the more likely you are to spend a tax break. The richer you are, the more likely you are to save it. We want people to spend the money they get from the tax breaks.
I just called my Rep. (Joe Courtney CT 2nd) and someone actually answered the phones after the 2nd ring. I told them why I was calling and explained my opposition. They actually took my info down and claimed they would get back to me.
Better then last time when they were sending calls to VM right off the bat. Than again it is amazing when they do their jobs.
