Super Bowl bet: What will the thermostat temp be at the White House party?

Super Bowl bet: What will the thermostat temp be at the White House party?

75 degrees? 76? 77? And will there be nachos and beer…or more wagyu steak and cocktails? How about some Snuggies?

Inquiring minds want to know:

Sure, it’s all about bipartisanship. Not to mention the perks of watching the Super Bowl at the White House with the first fan playing host.

President Barack Obama is inviting a group of lawmakers — some Republicans, many Democrats, and a few from Pennsylvania and Arizona — to join him for Sunday’s championship game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals.

With no Chicago team for Obama to cheer, the president said he’s rooting for Pittsburgh against the “long-suffering” and “great Cinderella story” Cardinals, and he wished the Cardinals the best.

Steelers owner Dan Rooney, a longtime Republican, endorsed Obama’s presidential bid and campaigned for him. Obama also noted that Franco Harris, one of the most beloved former Steelers, campaigned for him in Pittsburgh, too.

Five of the 15 lawmakers invited to join Obama are from Pennsylvania, and two are from Arizona. There are four senators and 11 representatives. The group includes 11 Democrats, four Republicans and three women.

This just infuriates me. While the MSM was lamenting the foot of snow heading for the Northeast (a not uncommon amount or occurrence) Southeast Missouri and Western KY were under 4″+ of ice with numerous cities and counties without electricity or water and they received but a brief mention. Before the storm hit KY it devastated SE MO all the way through the bootheel. There are entire MO counties with almost 100% power outages and an accompanying loss of public water supplies. Because of trees and power lines across the roads, not to mention the ice, sleet and snow accumulation, many rural residents cannot get to warming stations. The St. Louis coordinated Red Cross effort (I use the term effort loosely) has set up supply and warming stations in the few large towns but has refused to set them up in some other harder hit areas until those are full completely ignoring the fact that many people cannot travel the 30-50 miles to those larger towns. Frustrating.

One town of about 12,000 people in the bootheel where my neighbor’s parents live has had 100% power outage for almost a week now, no gasoline or kerosene available locally, no water and an estimated 400 power poles broken off and on the ground. They are being told it will be perhaps another 2 weeks before they have power or water and for rural areas of that county 3-4 weeks. Seeing pictures looking down a county road with power poles snapped off and laying across the road for as far as the camera can see is certainly astounding. The ONLY help these people are getting (except from friends and local communities not as hard hit) is from the National Guard as of Friday. The utility companies are working hard, however, they underestimated the devastation having only hundreds of extra power poles rather than the thousands needed until more are delivered.

We were on the northern edge of the really bad stuff (the heavy freezing rain line was about 5 miles south of our town) and were fortunate that we are in the area utility companies down here first addressed with their storm damage abatement project started a few years ago. While we have 3-4″ of frozen solid sleet/freezing rain under snow, that winter mix instead of just freezing rain meant that we didn’t have nearly as much ice covering aerial lines, just on the ground.

Traveling into the northern edge of the hardest hit area in SE MO it looks like an aerial explosion went off about 10′ below treetop level. Most of the upper branches are snapped off. Seeing trees probably 4′ in diameter literally split vertically down the trunk as the weight of ice on one side tore it apart is amazing. Most of the area is impassable without a 4-wheel drive vehicle and on unplowed/chemically treated roads even that is pretty iffy.

I honestly think that if this had happened in areas that are not mostly red with primarily caucasian residents that we would see a very different reaction from the media and the government. But these are rural Americans not given to expect others to take care of them and not likely to whine much to the media after the fact. A far different, more self-reliant population than we saw in NOLA.

My fear of Obama’s socialistic programs goes deeper than the simple lose of personal freedoms. My fear is he will create a change in the human spirit, from the exhilaration of self-reliance, to the bondage of dependancy. We have six thousand years of history before our constitution was written. For the first time in our existence the government must answer to the governed. Obamas has stated that he thinks the constitution is filled with negatives. He believes there should be a new “Bill of Rights”, giving the people guarantees to all life’s necessities. This will destroy the human spirit of creativity and drive.
Unless Obama has some preferential knowledge of God that gives him greater knowledge than the rest of us, it is audacious of him to assume he alone knows what is best for the individual.
The unfettered evolution of freedom is the only path that should be followed.

This has LONG been a major fear of mine of an Obama presidency; giving others — particularly younger blacks — the excuse to slack off because gov’t will take up the slack. Long ago my post here caught jokes because I stated that over half of Queens here (bigger than Boston or Houston) EXPECTS free housing and vittles and even wheels as a RIGHT. No one’s joking now. I wish others took it that way last Nov. Worst thing is they just might get it because once the black hole of socialism sucks you in it’s hell ever coming out — just how the Dems plan to shut conservatives out forever. Shoot the pendulum; they might very well score this time for good.

Any time I have seen a natural disaster hit fly over country the propagandist of the MSM barely mentions it. We are doing our best to be self reliant as possible in our little community of the middle of nowhere Idaho with plenty of rations, a rotated water supply, with many other essentials and as soon as funds become available all I need is a modest gas operated generator and a couple of propane operated heaters and we should be able to weather any thing mother nature throws at us aside from the over hyped super volcano eruption at Yellowstone National Park. FamilyMan in our part of the Eldahow as the Shoshone called it there is a whole lot of nothing, but sage brush and rock with some trees to the north along the Danskin and Soldier Mountains broken up by the Snake River Canyon at least to the casual observer. Matter of historical fact in 1814 Peter Ogden leading a fur brigade for the Hudson’s Bay Company in his journal described the area between the Bureau and Boise rivers the most desolate 50 miles of land he ever saw in his life. We happen to be in the middle of this area on a flat plateau above the Snake River Canyon, which is great for an Air Force Base runway with our very supportive community being 10 miles northeast near the Danskin Mountains.

When military families arrive at the main gate of the base there has been more than one wife that has broken down in tears at the site of their new home. We actually considered putting one of our 2nd Lieutenants on suicide watch because she was so depressed about being here (city girl and daddy’s little princess). The upside is we are 45 miles from town and 55 miles from the base to Boise, with most of the drive on I-84 with a speed limit of 75 mph. In about 30 minutes you are in a modest sized city with everything you need for the younger folks and includes a brand new Temple of Man (Cabela’s outfitter warehouse). This area boast some of the best camping, hunting, and fishing areas with plenty of wild life around. The area has really grown on us living in a very friendly community with a large proportion of old retired guys like me. Every September we host the largest parade in the state for Air Force Appreciation Day averaging over 250 floats and vehicles driven through the parade path ending at a beautiful tree lined park with a free barbeque for all comers.

Of course the sophisticated folks from Sun Valley and big cities (especially Californians) would hate it here. Yeah! That’s it! You would really hate it! When major network anchors make statements toward the south like, “take that all you bigots and racists in the south,” referencing Obama’s inauguration, there is a dangerous line being drawn. There is no benefit in that kind of rhetoric, when it is not true. If you don’t agree, you’re branded.

The idea that southerners didn’t vote for Obama because of his race is now a fore-gone conclusion and probably already being recorded as fact. It’s as though they’ve concluded that those ‘bigots and racists’ deserve no sympathies, and will no longer be served or tolerated by the better of us.

Oppression never goes away, someone once noted, the target is merely changed. Tell me how is it not bigotry by pure definition, to call a segment of our population names and make false claims about them to the world. To accuse them of viewpoints they do not hold, simply because of political differences?

Is this the new direction Obama was touting in his candidacy? We all know the viewpoints of Black Liberation Theology. I hope I’m wrong, but this blatant unconcern by our POTUS for millions suffering seems surreal to me.

Things are already bad enough without him exploiting their plight in an attempt to posture as some can-do problem-solver whose solutions, in reality, would only complicate the situation even more. The people of Kentucky have an opportunity to demonstrate that it is possible to persevere without the grace of The Lord Barack Almighty. Don’t invite him to ruin their recovery, especially when his added damage would only be treated as “proof” that they need his meddling.

It’s the same in principle as his economic meddling. He participated in intimidating banks into making loans to unqualified borrowers. The borrowers didn’t pay their mortgages, the banks then started crashing, followed by the whole economy going with them. And now, who’s here to saddle us with “bold, decisive action” that can’t be delayed?

Back in the good old days when ‘rendition’ was a bad thing…

LOS ANGELES – Before her latest film, if anyone had asked Reese Witherspoon what the term “extraordinary rendition” meant, she might have answered with a blank stare.

The words could be bureaucratese for something as innocuous as a tax deduction. But as Witherspoon’s “Rendition” spells out darkly and melodramatically, the term actually stands for a U.S. government practice of transferring terrorism suspects to other countries, where their interrogations could subject them to abuse and torture.

“I don’t think I realized what the term was called,” Witherspoon told The Associated Press at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, where “Rendition” played in advance of its theatrical release Friday. “The term is not really in the popular vernacular.

    …….

“It sounds like public-policy rigmarole. It doesn’t sound like anything that you would connect with the torture and detainment of innocent people.”

    ………..

In “Rendition,” Witherspoon plays the wife of an Egyptian-born man (Omar Metwally) suspected of involvement in a Middle East terrorist bombing who is abducted by U.S. authorities and sent overseas for questioning at a secret facility. Jake Gyllenhaal co-stars as a CIA analyst who comes to question his government’s sanctioning of such abusive interrogations.

When a Egyptian-born chemical engineer goes missing, his wife is desperate to track him down, unaware that he’s in a U.S. run detention facility.

As her character begs for answers from government officials, including a cold-hearted intelligence bureaucrat played by Meryl Streep, Witherspoon transforms into a desperate, emotional wreck.
