WH spokesman on Daschle: “Nobody’s perfect”

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 2, 2009 02:15 PM

Interesting.

The White House press corps stopped snoozing today and is all over WH spokesman Robert Gibbs on the Daschle tax debacle.

ABC News’s Jake Tapper, who broke the story late Friday night, pressed Gibbs on whether Daschle’s ethical messes undercut Obama’s squeaky clean agenda. Several other reporters questioned the Team Obama talking point that Daschle was the “best” suited nominee to handle the job given his cloud.

Gibbs was glib: “Nobody’s perfect.”

Except, of course, The One…

Ethics are only for Republicans. Democrats can skirt or change the rules as they see fit. When all else fails, they sue, sue, and sue more until they get the results they’re looking for.

I think in this entire nation of almost 300 million people, there is certainly someone better suited for the job than Daschle.

In the summer of 2006 I got a letter from the IRS. The letter was very threatening in tone, and detailed for me how if I didn’t pay what I owed they’d garnish my wages, put a lien on my home and, if all else fails, file criminal charges.

The grand total I owed in taxes, interest and penalties? $2,700.

To rub salt into the wound created by this entire debacle, we were working on taxes yesterday and discovered a change in the tax code is going to cost a couple of thousand this year. I’m not sure how long we can remain ethical before we have a lapse in memory and make a mistake. In our favor, of course. (I mean, have you noticed that NONE of these Dems ever makes a mistake in the IRS’s favor???) What is the IRS going to do if millions of Americans start making “mistakes”? The precedence has been set. They can’t throw us into jail for anything less than 6 figures. (And how many of us have the means to cheat the IRS out of 6 figures?)

I’ve been to Central America several times in the past year. I’ve seen first hand what happens when people do not expect their government to behave ethically. Bribery and cheating are expected — they are the only way to accomplish anything. (I joke that a corruption charge translates into English as didn’t-offer-big-enough-bribe.) We are heading there at warp speed.
