Obama gets his S-CHIP Trojan Horse, first tax hike of 2009: “The first step” Updated

As expected, the House today gave final approval to the S-CHIP government health care expansion funded with a massive tax hike on smokers. President Obama is set to sign the bill amid great “progressive” fanfare. The kiddie human shield strategy strikes again.
The roll call vote is up here. The vote was 290-135.

Take heed: President Obama said at the signing that this is just the “first step.”
For once, a moment of pure ideological candor.
Also: Obama’s praise for the provision loosening of eligibility for legal immigrants and their children (a “first step” toward allowing illegal aliens to partake of the bounty) garnered the most applause from the audience and members of Congress.
Rep. Steve King’s statement in opposition to the S-CHIP expansion says it all:

Yes we need to move to this socialist medicine plan so we can have great health care like this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1135582/Man-pulls-13-teeth-pliers-NHS-dentist.html?ITO=1490
Yes we can pay for health care for illegal aliens!
I challenge every Reublican;
QUIT SMOKING TODAY !!!!
So can we deny drivers licenses for every child under 30?
This is awesome news. Now every child will get what every PERSON is ENTITLED to…medical care.
We’ll get everyone covered in the next four years.
This is disgusting. Taxing smokers to line the pockets of unworthy parents .
People dont have kids if you can not afford their health care bills.
Welcome to People’s republic of USA.
Four Cuban Americans voted for this bill (Martinez, Ros-Leithen, and Diaz-Balart brothers) and Cao who suffered under communism in Vietnam. WTF? They support socialism here?!
I as a conservative American of Cuban heritage am beyond annoyed. They will receive scathing letters from me of their betrayal of democracy and Reaganism.
Directly contradicts the principle of Era of Responsibility. Intellectually dishonest.
Again, not a Republican in the bunch.
No more taxable tobacco products for me. (But I won’t quit smoking legal tobacco.)
Great. Are you going to be the liberal who finally tells us how this is going to be paid for?
BTW under these rules, My daughter qualifies for schip.
And legal ones ! Dont forget the ones who come here on the variety of phony visas and “diversity” lotteries created by democrat socialists. “legal” ones are not much better than the illegal ones. they just had better lawyers.
Here in the UK, we pay through the nose for the NHS which provides below par health service. Ask any Brit and they’ll tell you horror stories about how long they had to wait for treatment, how poor the quality of service was and how big a waste of national resources. Many companies (including the one I work for) tout _private_ health care as one of their benefits. If state funded health care was so good, why do we need private health care at all? Keep in mind that we’ve had state funded health care here in the UK for almost 60 years now and the system still sucks. Nobody who has any choice wants to rely on the NHS alone.
I’m curious. In addition to free health care, what do you think that people are _entitled_ to? State funded health care has failed all over the world. It’s moronic to think that it would somehow magically succeed in the US of A. Socialism only appeals to liars and fools: The liars pedal the goods, the fools consume them.
I posted this on another thread, but it may be more appropriate here:
Tipping points are “the levels at which the momentum for change becomes unstoppable.”
Malcolm Gladwell’s book, “Tipping Point”, comes to mind with each power grab by the federal government. At what point do we reach it, or have we already passed it?
Will anyone know the difference? The coverage will be so nominal and the quality of care so reduced and minimal, will anyone benefit? Certainly not the high caliber students that medical schools seek; those folks will get careers in other fields, or practice medicine elsewhere.
How big a fight will there be when “Private Medical Care” pops up. In other words, you don’t get to see the doctor, let alone get in a hospital, without a 750 or better FICO score?
We need to make these republican collaborators pay big time.
Thank you, PGTips, for your post! Your credibility makes it an essential read.
This is a drug bill. This will put millions of children on prescription drugs that they don’t need and will turn the 50% of our country into zombies.
czombies?
ozambies?
eaglehaslanded: Who many in the private insurance industry will lose their jobs??
500,000??? 1 million, do you care????
Could be 500 million according to Pelosi, sonofdy
cicerokid:

President Bush wouldn’t sign SCHIP because it covered too many older (over 18) people, ILLEGAL ALIENS (not “undocumented immigrants”), and due to it’s coverage of well off families–with $100,000 a year income or more.
***
The American Taxpayers (aka VICTIMS) will soon see the higher costs to pay for this. Don’t think that only smokers will pay for this–all will end up paying for it as SCHIP displaces private insurance.
***
Socialist / Marxist President Obama states that this is only a “first step”–he will come for the rest of our money soon. Welcome to the NEW U.S.S.A!

just a fun photo
All you smokers, keep smoking. It’s the patriotic thing to do (per Biden’s philosophy), now that you support S-Chip. With all the taxes on tobacco, state, local and national, and more probably coming, the government should stop telling people to quit and start promoting “Joe Camel” and the Marlboro man. Obama should do all of his appearances with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. Perhaps, we could have a “National Smokers Day”. Just think of the extra money raised…for the children, of course.
I won’t pay!
Want to bet?
As the number of smokers dwindles they will need to look elsewhere for income. Who’s next? Alcohol? French Fries? Mayo? It is just a matter of time.
So, will “Duh One” put another tax evader, or someone who bankrupted an organization like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae in charge of it?
Everyone, repeat after me: “Oh Lord, we lift up the USA to You. Please help our country. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.”
sonofdy
You don’t know me, you might be surprised. But, I understand what you say. But , we the few, who wish to fight,,,, may surprise you.
I buy legal tobacco today, I grow my own tomorrow. As Mel Brooks said in ” History of the world part II ” @#!&$#@ the poor !
This is a payoff to bootleggers and terrorists. The gangs and mafia love this !
“Attention in the waiting room:
Now serving number 6,954. 6,954, you will report to screening room number 118.”
I have to say it, but I am already hating Obama. Listening to that “conference”, he just blasted those Republicans who voted against this. He sounded just like Barney Frank.
This after he DICTATED his new plan on executive pay. I am sure he is immitating Perez.
Wait a minute. I make under $250,000 per year. I thought….
Obamanation:Definition; An idiot who toes the party line with no intellect involved.
Sorry…Intellect=Integrity.
This is not exactly true. If everyone in the country suddenly quits smoking, the funding will theoretically drop to zero, but it won’t affect the amount of money paid out by the program one bit.
IOW, the “funding” of the program is a lie.
Bad enough, I used to work for a company and; they want me to pay $5 for my w-2…I’m not bitter, much…
Exactly right , Irving!
Smoking cessation; $75 million, what a crock. Michigan spent their money, 430 million, from the tobacco settlement on college aid. Reasoning was, college educated people smoke less. WTF are THEY smoking ?
Audit and drug-test all gov’t employees.
To Irving’s point, on the one hand they add billions to spending with the Schip on the back of smokers and on the other hand we add millions on the tax payers to eliminate the very smokers that are needed to pay the tax. Circular logic and we are stuck with the bill.
Amen Brother.
Commieagle is both. So don’t act too surprised by his asinine commentary
I see that Google returns 436,000 hits for the search ‘home tobacco growing.’ It grows in all fifty states and a small 3ft x 25ft garden will keep a 2 pack a day smoker supplied.
And, this is only the start of telling you what you can eat, how warm you can keep your home, and how long you can veg out on the sofa – after all, Michelle O’ deemed it a given when on the campaign trail. Stark reality is a b&*@ch. This is not the end boys and girls – we’re in for a rough ride, on a horse that was put away wet last night.
This is a total liberal wet dream. Providing free health care to bums and their kids and punishing smokers. A twofer.
Obama administration cancels awarded oil and gas leases in Utah.
If high oil prices that drive down driving (and the rest of the economy) to save us from carbon dioxide, which may or may not be a significant greenhouse gas, is the goal, than Obama has the answers.
Don’t drill now, don’t drill here.
^^
Double bonus- Utah is full of Mormons who oppose gay marriage and usually vote Rethuglican- throwing some of them out of work and making Robert Redford happy is a win-win.
Health care for illegal’s kids, the parents of which on’t pay taxes, how generous is that.
Can American tax payers support the whole world?
So does John Deaux! And you thought HIPAA was bad.
I want to know when I’m getting my check to cover my mortgage and gas money.
I sold radiology equipment with the reconstructing of the images soft and hard ware….. find a job for me in MN…..Hah!
Leave it to my backstabbing BORE Congressman Simpson to vote for this load of crap. So glad my wife quit smoking over 17 years ago and I never started. This will hammer the heck out my nicotine addicted sister-in-law, which means more financial assistance from us to help her make ends meet. They pulled this sin tax in “Orygun” resulting in my father-in-law quiting cold turkey unwilling to put the drain on the household’s already limited funds resulting in his death in 3 weeks thanks to a massive coronary. I wonder what the body count will be from this tax on the poor. I love the way they are keeping Zero’s campaign promise of lowering taxes on 95% of Americans.
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE (mo-lone lah-veh) Translation: Come and take them!
Thanks for your post, I’ve lived through the National Health too, and can attest to your post. My nephew[lives in England] had to wait six months for an MRI when he dislocated his knee, my son, who went through the same problem waited a grand total of 24 hours and was in surgery within the week to repair a torn ligament, my nephew, a year later, still waiting for surgery. Meanwhile he can’t play soccer or do anything active, he’s only 15 years old. I’m so glad I live here.[For now at least}.
They’ll use it for other things too. The kiddies will need to curb the second amendment, the kiddies will need a fairness doctrine, the kiddies will need to nationalize the airlines…
If it works like booze, the infernal revenoors don’t care, you’ll owe the tax anyway and they’ll be after you a thousand times faster and harder than on Geithner.
When the time comes, I will be there.
I’d rather they tax smokers than me (I pay enough already, thank you!), but when more people stop smoking and they start running low on funds, then I guess they come around and start taxing everyone else.
Will smoking now be considered patriotic? Or just buying tobacco and paying the taxes?
Yes, this is AWESOME NEWS. In just a few short years, we’ll have the government telling us what we can eat, how much to exercise, and when to die.
I hope someone you love gets denied coverage by a government bean-counter, eagle. Then you’ll see what we’ve been telling you: socialized medicine sucks.
I think they already do EQ. It’s called abortion.
Well, I guess if you’re going to steal from the next two generations, you might as well do your best to make them healthy and productive.
pgtips – Thank you so much for chiming in on this thread!
National Healthcare for every single American scares me. I have a blog post set to go up tomorrow at 9:00 am that explains a little bit more about where I am coming from.
Let’s just say that I’ve seen how the government health plan takes care of the military, our veterans, and their dependents.
You were SO right when you said that Socialism was for Liars and Fools. I know a couple of Liars that LOVE to take advantage and take whatever they can get, point their finger, bitch and complain… etc. They want the government to take care of all of their needs, etc. These same people have NO pride whatsoever.
Obama is a Liar, Princess Pelosi is a Liar, and those that voted for Obama are the FOOLS.
Well… I spent a few minutes typing up a comment for this thread. I think I lost it. Y’all will just have to see what I have to say about this tomorrow morning.
I wanted pgtips to know how much I appreciate the effort to share what is going on under your own nationalized healthcare over in the UK. Americans do Not understand and you are not the first person from the UK or even from Canada to chime in on how horrible nationalized healthcare really is.
Our government healthcare can’t even provide for the military, her veterans, or their dependents. More tomorrow morning via my blog…
#63: I don’t know, but by Joe Biden’s standards, Geithner and Daschle sure ain’t patriotic….
Here’s the really interesting part: Unless it has been taken out, there’s $75 million in the stimulus fraud bill for smoking cessation treatment, lol.
Freakin’ morons. God I hate liberals.
I think EnglishQueen 101 was refering to Euthenasia…
I wonder when Pelosi will offer up a “new baby” tax?
Yes, that’s what I was referring to.
A family member was recently diagnosed with ALS and was hospitalized New Year’s Eve from complications of the same. They’ve been in the hospital for over a month now, slowly recovering. They will never, however, be cured and ALS is a fatal disease.
Under socialized medicine – and with the full blessing and cheer of people like eaglehaslanded and Obama – they probably would have pulled them off the ventilator back on January 2nd and let them die because their care is going to be too expensive for the government to warrant keeping them alive. Or they’d pay for assisted suicide to prevent them from being a “burden” (read: too expensive).
Same thing with my grandfather, who suffered a stroke in 1988 and was left paralyzed on the left side of his body. We cared for him until his death in 1993. Today in the UK and parts of Canada, he’d be considered a burden and he’d have been “put down” after having the stroke.
The brilliant political minds in England have already said the ill and elderly have a patriotic duty to off themselves because their care costs too much.
Socialized medicine sets up a system that’s capable of providing medical care for healthy people. The sickly, well…not so much. It makes no sense. Which, of course, is why illogical liberals love it.
That idea has been tossed about, too.
Saving the planet, and all that, for the children we tax, contracept, and abort out of existence. Again, a perfectly illogical and immoral ideology that liberals wholeheartedly embrace.
Well, this gives me one more reason to quit smoking (not that I need another). Actually, this is a lot of motivation for me as I am sick and tired of paying for my children AND every other IRRESPONSIBLE person who had children they either can not afford or are unwilling to sacrifice their standard of living to pay for their own GD children. Especially, illegals and their d*mn anchor babies. Let those big mouth liberals pony up the cost. Eventually they to will tire of having their $ redistributed. A pox on all their houses.
That liberal “circular logic” is pervasive in every policy they enact. Another example, they bemoan the environmental impacts of humans and set carbon reduction targets, while at the same time pushing for ever higher levels of immigration. One negates the other.
Well, I’ll be avoiding the punitive tax on smokers at least. . .I’ve quit because my gal just told me I’m going to be a father. She quit too.
Just between the two of us, that’s approximately $333/year the government won’t be getting to help pay for SCHIP.
Englishqueen…euthanasia was the first step in the road to the camps for the Nazis. They sent all the retarded, epileptic, lepers etc. to the camps….then the “work shy”….then enemies of the state..then Gypsies, Slavs and Jews.
The reason things have been chaotic in America is that Americans did not want to ever give the government too much power. They knew the road to the death camps lies in centralized power.
Now they have flipped. God help us. I fear duh1=666.
