Alert: Who are the Senate GOP wobblers?; Update: Reid says he has two Republicans; Collins is sold; Voino no?; 6:15pm Eastern Reid: “I don’t have 60 votes yet…We should outlaw polls;” No vote tonight

Scroll for updates…Collins falls; Voino a no?…6:15pm Eastern…Reid on floor…will work into night…”I don’t have 60 votes yet…we should outlaw polls..;” 9:00pm Eastern update…No vote tonight…

Buzz on the Hill is that the Senate may vote today on the Generational Theft Act of 2009. Harry Reid and the Dems are desperate to end public debate.

And then there’s this oh-so-important consideration (hat tip: Rob Neppell):

“An analyst on Bloomberg just said the talk in Washington is that the Stimulus bill must pass today because many Senators are booked to a security “junket” to Munich tomorrow. Your govt. at work.”

Crikey.

The Senate GOP wobblers may be conspiring on a disastrous compromise as we speak. Who are they?

I’m told that the Squishy Four are (no surprises here):

Collins (202) 224-2523
Snowe (202) 224-5344
Voinovich (202) 224-3353
Specter (202) 224-4254

Staunch conservative Sen. Coburn is on the floor right now defiantly rebutting Harry Reid’s hurry-up alarmism. Coburn: “Hurry up is what got us into trouble in the first place.”

Call the GOP wobblers. Tell ‘em to slam the brakes. Kill the bill. Stab it. Stick a fork in it. Then start from scratch.

***

Update: The Hill reports that Reid says he has two Republicans…

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters Thursday that he has enough votes to pass a more than $900 billion stimulus bill out of the Senate.

Reid said he believes at least two Republicans of “good will” would support the Democratic-crafted package.

“Do we have the votes? I believe we do,” said Reid, who expects a final vote on the package will be held on Thursday.

Update: Collins is sold…

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine said Obama, in a meeting with her on Wednesday, had persuaded her that the ultimate bill should be “in the neighborhood of $800 billion.”

“The president did convince me,” she said, adding that she believed the two sides would reach a compromise on the Senate stimulus package on Thursday.

***

Update: Hill source says latest word from Voinovich is that he’ll vote against it. Managing my expectations of Crybaby George, but it’s a glimmer of Hope…

A reader e-mails that she just got through to Voino’s office and his statement is a bit more squeamy (I know, it’s not a word, but it fits): “He doesn’t support the bill in its present form.”

Update: 6:15pm Eastern…Reid on floor…will work into night…”I don’t have 60 votes yet…we should outlaw polls…” Yeah, damn those polls when they don’t go your way.

Update: 9:00pm Eastern. Reid calls it quits for the night!

You are correct Omu. However this is not about what is good for or is not good for the Republican Party. This is about what is good for this country. Why do you think SO many people are opposed to this pork loaded spending bill? Do you think its because suddenly 80 some percent of the country is now Republican?

The bill will destroy a part of the foundation of our country which then will harm our economy.

It will not only not work, it will do further harm.

This is something that even RINO’s ought to get.

Its time for them to STOP thinking politics and start thinking outside of themselves and the bigger picture.

This bill is not only bad, its damaging.

President Obama Likely to Order Military Commission Charges Dropped Against Terrorist Suspect
    ABC Political Punch ^ | February 05, 2009 | Jake Tapper

ABC News has learned that on Friday, President Obama will likely order the Department of Defense’s Military Commission to withdraw charges against terrorist suspect Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. The charges may later be reinstated in a military commission or pursued in a civilian court. Al-Nashiri will remain in custody.

The announcement will not be made until after President Obama meets with the families of victims of terrorist attacks on 9/11 and on the U.S.S. Cole, where he will assure them that this step is not being done to be lenient towards al-Nashiri. The move is being done to stop the continued prosecution of al-Nashiri in a court system that his administration may ultimately find illegitimate, not for any other reason, sources told ABC News.

President Obama has expressed concern about whether the military commissions set up by the Bush administration are the proper way to go forward in pursuing charges against the U.S. detainees, and on January 22 he asked all the judges supervising the trials of detainees for a continuance of 120 days, so a team of administration officials could review the best way forward.

In almost the cases, that continuance request was granted. But last week the judge supervising the al-Nashiri trial –– Army Col. James L. Pohl, the chief judge at the Guantanamo Bay war crimes court –– said he would not heed President Obama’s request for a 120-day continuance, or delay, in prosecutions of terrorism suspects. Pohl called the president’s request “not reasonable” and not “in the interests of justice.”

The arraignment of al-Nashiri is scheduled for Monday, February 9.

Maybe if they kill it, Congress can try manageable chunks at a time that might actually stimulate the economy. More spending of military equipment like the F-22 and F-35 and upgraded tanks and more submarines.

A reduction in the business tax rate. Maybe lower the lowest tax rate by half, if Obama really cares about poor people.

Because the Porkulus bill, like the S-CHIP, is just the beginning. A UAW approved permanent government bailout of Detroit is coming. Carbon “cap and trade”, ie, more taxes that will make the US less competitive. Who knows what crap the either/or/both Marxist or corrupt Demonrats will think of to increase the size of government, reduce the private sector, limit the Second Amendment and the First Amendment (The 9th and 10th are already dead, for all intents and purposes).

A defeat for Obama now, that shows some of the less hard core Marxists (ie, the corrupt, who value reelection over ideology, like the so-called “Blue Dogs”) in the Demonratic Party that the American people didn’t vote for the Soviet Union when they voted for “change”, which was never described by Obama and never questioned by his slobbering media sycophants, might keep more legislative disasters from getting passed.

Lobbyists and their conservative allies in Congress are working hard to kill these crucial provisions and instead spend that money on more tax cuts for the rich.

Only a massive public outcry will make sure Obama and Congress stand firm for these key investments in our economy…

Than one gets Italy, or Israel, where bizarre coalitions are formed to rule, and where tough decisions usually collapse the government.

Our system worked fine until the Soviet Union, aided by Henry Wallace and George McGovern and communist allies in media and the universities, started training and developing a generation of people, whether they knew they were active Soviet tools or not, who took control of the Democrat Party following the communist inspired riots in 1968, so that McGovernites controlled the party by 1972, to the point now that
there basically are no non-Marxists left in the leadership of the party.

When we had two separate parties, that both had patriots who loved there country, the system worked well.

And the journey of the Demonrats to an American hating Communist Party USA in all but name drove many liberals who didn’t hate America outright into the Republican Party, diluting the party, and giving us people like Olympia Snowe and Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins and Meg Whitman and Rudy Giuliani who believe they are Republicans.

John McCain is a perfect example of a Scoop Jackson/Harry S Truman anti-communist Democrat, but that party was already dying when he first ran for the House from Arizona, forcing him to run as a Republican. Lindsay Graham is another Democrat forced to be a Republican because the old Democrat Party is dead.

Only the hopelessly corrupt, like Murtha and Daley, or Marxists, like San Fran Nan, are Demonrats now. (Actually, she is corrupt and a Marxist).

Again, I repeat, the “Blue Dogs”, Dems from conservative districts, are a fraud. Out of 49, 11 voted against the Porkulus in the House.

The conservatives should get a clue from the radical collectivists. This “stimulus” bill and this “crisis” is an OPPORTUNITY.

The Republicans should go into a beserker rage and push for a repeal of all withholding taxes for people earning under, I don’t know, $40k a year – FICA, Medicare, SS, everything.

Let those poor people keep EVERYTHING they earn!

The collectivists want to play class warfare? Fine, give it back to them and give it to them hard.

Ram it down their throats and cry about all the poor people needing everything they earn!

Wail for the cameras and ram it through!

Then it’s just one small step to a Fair Tax…

If the Republicans wished to take the high road here, they would stick with 1) explaining how the only Constitutional means possible for Congress to involve itself in this matter is through a discussion of taxation, which just so happens to have a track record of success, and 2) that nothing in the Democratic (funny thing how you won’t find the word ‘Democracy’ anywhere in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, nor any State Constitution because we have a Republic, but I digress) “stimulus” plan is Constitutional.

I see you all saw the grandstanding BHO did on tv. What a douchebag, I can’t believe he actually said to quit crying over earmarks because what bill does not come out of washington without earmarks. He should have just put on a clown costume and danced around the stage with a horn. He, Pelosi and Reid are the clown masters of ceremony in the three ringed circus that is our House, Senate and White House.

Here’s Governor Corzine’s take on it:

Gov. Jon Corzine today said it would be “catastrophic” for New Jersey as well as the country if a major federal stimulus package does not pass, saying it could mean more than a billion-dollar difference in the amount he will have to cut from the state budget to be unveiled next month.

If we don’t see that program in the state of New Jersey, we will see cuts that are dramatically more serious than the ones I am now working on,” Corzine said. “We’re going to have cuts regardless of what is included in that package, but they’re going to be even more severe — billion dollars or more severe — for the upcoming fiscal year.”

I’m starting to sense a trend. Boohoo.

You’re more right than you know. Read the writings of the early Marxists (Marx, Lenin, Gramsci, Lukács and others) and you’ll see how.
First, promote chaos; chaos causes uncertainty; uncertainty, fear; fear, desire for hope; desire for hope, a savior. While promoting chaos, one needs only to prop up their version of a savior. If you’re of the Marxist persuasion, then government is that savior, promoted via a cult of personality.

President Obama will go on prime time TV on Monday. Probably to deliver his catastrophic message that if Pelosi‘s his stimulus package doesn’t get passed right away, the United States as we are today will be worse than at any time in our Country’s past.

He will panic the dumb-masses and they will demand the stimulus package get passed.

OK. Fine. That is what he believes.

So, is Mr. Steele at the RNC gonna start the media campaign about the porkulus BEFORE PBO has a chance to continue the enabling of the msm in favor of PBO?

This is a test of the new leadership at the RNC.

I just don’t understand either how insanely stupid these guys are or how stupid they think we are. There is NO money. The stimulus package is not MONEY. It is pretend, borrowed, make believe DEBT money. Either these guys are out of their minds and don’t understand the difference between REAL money and BORROWED money OR they do and they think we are all idiots.

If we don’t have the money now to cover government, state and federal, budgets borrowing it does not then mean we suddenly HAVE the money. We don’t have the money. Get on with the pain.

Borrowing it doesn’t fix the pain. It does however magnify the pain when the funds need to be paid back.

I learned about this thing in the military that I am afraid is happening now. I was in the Navy. Periodically we had inspections. Of course the guys doing the inspections and the folks being inspected all knew each other. While it was serious business, it was also sorta a game.

When I was early in the Navy we were having an inspection and I was a cleaning, organizing, checking every detail fool. About 1/2 through the day an old seasoned chief petty officer came over to me and said, “Slow down son. Here’s how this works. The inspectors will look until they find something. Our job is to give them something to find. Not too easy to find as then we’ll make them look bad. Not too hard to fix cause that will make us look bad and make our work harder. They’ll find something. We’ll fix something. Everyone looks good. Then we get back to being normal and get on with our day.”

So that’s what we did. And it worked perfectly. It worked every year that we had inspections.

So now our “leaders” are all busy trying to find things to cut out so that in the end, the total amount of this bill isn’t so high. That is still not a good thing. It is a rope-a-dope you see. We’ll feel all good and pat ourselves on the backs because our good Republican leaders cut this, cut that, so that its not as big as the Democrats wanted. They’ll pat themselves on their proverbial backs for being all partisan like, Obama all unifier like, and we still get SCREWED.

How much stuff do you think is in this bill that was put in their to get cut? Goofy stupid spending stuff that is in their for one purpose; to get cut to serve a political ends to impact people’s perceptions of this bill?

We don’t want this bill trimmed down. We want this bill stopped.

The rope-a-dope is in place folks.
