Ensign/McConnell mortgage entitlement fails, 35-62; Update: Roll call vote added
Scroll for update…roll call vote added…
The good news: The Ensign/McConnell $fill-in-the-blank-billion/trillion mortgage entitlement just failed.
The roll call vote was 35-62. Among the sane Republicans who voted NO: DeMint, Snowe, and Voinovich.
Plus: Sens. Bunning and Snowe.
All the rest foolishly cast their vote in favor of a massive Big Government “cure.”
The incurable urge of the Senate GOP leadership to be “for something” — no matter how fiscally irresponsible and ineffective — will come back to bite them in the backside.
It gave Chuck Schumer the golden opportunity on the Senate floor this afternoon to sanctimoniously deride the expansive plan as a spending boondoggle — echoing taxpayer groups who rightly called out this dumb idea from the start.
Schumer noted that the Obama Treasury Department is considering a similar plan. Now, what will the Republicans who supported the idea of low-interest, government-guaranteed mortgages to artificially prop up the housing market do when asked to show their bipartisanship and go along with whatever Obama/Geithner hatch? Suddenly awake to the bad consequences and oppose it on fiscal conservative grounds?
Blundermania.

Now if the Senate will just not come up with something even worse.
The Senate should just take a long vacation already.
Michelle these last two amendment votes have 97 votes. I know one missing is Minnesota’s who are the other two? Kennedy and?
I am glad to read this. Maybe, all within our government has not sold out to special interest like I thought.
It is barely possible that some of the Republicans voted for this to give themselves some plausible deniability when they vote against the whole bill. I reiterate, barely possible….
This is just anecdotal, but home prices in Socal may be approaching stabilization. How so? Prices are almost affordable. Any help from Washington may be too late and unnecessary.
Don’t those people in Washington do any real-time tracking of news on the ground or are they just a bunch of foolish reactionaries? They focus on unemployment numbers, which may be a lagging trend, and fail to look for signs of economic thawing.
Same goes with the stimulus bill. Scrap that piece of garbage and focus on prying loans from the grubby hands of bailed out banks and burning all of the toxic paper they created.
Oh, but wait just a dag gum minute here…
Look how BIPARTISAN this bill was….
DemocRATs voted THEIR way and Republicans voted mostly THEIR way. Yup, that’s the spirit!!!!
Pretzels are looking positively straight these days.
Hey I got some good news and some bad news. First the bad, the credit card company cut us off. Now the good, just got a new pre-qualified card in the mail — happy times are here again — Yippeeee
kill porkulus, everyone knows you can’t spend your way to prosperity.
McConnell (R-Loser)
Looks like this was just brought up so that some can claim they were for saving houses when asked why they voted against the final bill.
Political posturing and nothing more.
Like hearing from harry reid how important it is to ‘slam this bill in as fast as possible’. Everyone knows at best, it will take years for it to do anything. There will be no difference in it’s effect to the economy if it passes this month or next. The only real difference will be that the people will actually get to read and hear more about what is in it.
Now as we already know, the members of the senate, and those in the house, will claim that they never actually read the details later due to the urgency of it all!
Wow.
Those are words you don’t see used together very often.
Did Voinovich cry before the vote or after?
My son was great…. he said to me…” Dad, when I get back from Iraq….. can we start a revolution?” I simply told him, with enough brave men and women, it won’t be a problem….. Now,my question is, from what I’ve seen, who has the courage?
*McConnell has no cred; He voted for the original sin bailout and should have been replaced as minority leader to get the GOP back on a successful path, but alas, they never seem to learn.
*The insanity of a proposal like this coming from the supposed leader for the Republicans in the Senate shows once again that he desperately needs to brush up on the constitution to see that nowhere in the document does it allow for such action by the government; Get with it McConnell or go home!
Finally, a small glimmer of hope! Another really bad idea dies a horrible death. Now to throw the entire stack of bad ideas in the recycle bin and start over. Somehow I believe the sun will still come up in the morning despite the growing stories of great peril and economic Armageddon “dear leader” is trying to stampede the herd with.
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE (mo-lone lah-veh) Translation: Come and take them!
I know lots of people. We’re just desperately waiting for a leader.
Mark Warner is a Democrat BTW. He has more sense than Voinovich, Snowe, or Spector; but that’s not saying much.
Sounds pretty bipartisan to me.
Our losers voted their own way and their losers voted their own way.
Yep that worked well.
They should be for fighting fire with fire. They should be for outdoing them with class warfare. Give a one-year exemption for people earning less than $40k from any withholding taxes!
Don’t democrats care about the working poor? Don’t they care? Let these poor noble people go home with more money – NOW!
They deserve that money! They worked hard for it! Let our people go!
I’m thinking that some in the government are starting to understand that endebting your unborn great-grandchildren to the tune of trillions of dollars is not a good idea.
Does anyone know how much is a tillion? It takes about six seconds to count each number up to a trillion (there are more syllables as you get closer to a trillion). That is 6 trillion seconds. In years that is 190,259. Think about that! Or don’t, if it scares you.
Here are some interesting facts on just a billion.
– A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
– A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
– A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
– A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate Washington spends it.
This is why we can’t have socialism. You cannot spend your way out of debt!
Good going Bunning. Genuine conservative to the core.
I am still stupified they even proposed this …..things. What were they thiking?
Sorry my 20 hour day has hosed my typing.l
This is soooooo good. I was out skiing today so sitting in the chairlift, I asked several people who thought this mortgage thing was a good idea the following question:
Could they then tell me why if I wanted to buy an airplane or yacht that I shouldn’t get the same incentive? What is “magic” about housing?
Is housing somehow more stimulative? If I then later couldn’t pay for my airplane or yacht, should the government then step in and demand that anybody who loaned me money offer me different terms than when I originally signed?
Think I changed a couple of minds when they thought about it.
sorry in #23 – “today” meant Thursday
Film – I’m sorry to disagree here. If reducing taxes to a few is good – why not everybody who’s job is at risk. I say – zero federal income tax for everybody that does not work for the federal government.
(I’m picking up on your idea of class warfare though – the government class vs. the working class)
While I’m sure DeMint voted ‘No’ because he believes that the Bailout is unnecessary in any form, the only reason Snowe and Voinovich voted ‘No’ is because they are in bed with the Democrats.
However the Democrats vote, so votes Snowe and Voinovich. Sadly, I believe this is true more often than not…
It makes me wonder sometimes if maybe the Dems don’t have some kind of blackmail hold over them….
Crapweasles Cornyn and Hutchison were were in the “yea” column. Golly gee whizz, no wonder Sarah Palin endorsed Gov. Perry. Yuuukkkk!
Could it be Judd Gregg?
