Senate Moderates Reach Tentative Stimulus Deal
A group of Senate moderates working on an amendment to cut up to $100 billion in spending from the economic stimulus package have completed a tentative proposal that will be presented to Senate Democrats at a 5:30 p.m. caucus meeting, Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad told reporters. “There is a proposal that is sufficiently fleshed out and we will have a caucus and discuss it,” Conrad said after emerging from talks in Senate Majority Leader Reid’s office. Democrats hope the proposal, developed by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Ben Nelson, R-Neb. [SIC], will attract several GOP supporters and be acceptable to all Democrats, which would allow for passage of the plan as early as tonight.
Details will be posted on CongressDaily’s Web at http://www.nationaljournal.com/congressdaily/ site as they become available.

Update: Sen. Feinstein was on Fox a bit ago declaring that she “reserves the right to vote no.” Hearing that Sen. Ben Nelson of Florida and Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia are a few of the other Democrats on the fence.
The White House is…bewildered.

Im suprised. Really.
Kill the whole bill–lock, stock, and barrel!
(But, alas, this is preaching to the choir. At least it feels better than sending e-mails to my representatives in Congress, who are all Democrats, despite my votes.)
As you say Michelle, We’re screwed!
I called Senator Collins office and told them if someone took $100 from you and only gave you back $10–I doubted you’d be very happy. Removing $100 billion from nearly a trillion dollars amounts to the same thing. Crap sandwhich–hold the mayo. God save us all.
Yet again, the GOP proves beyond a shadow of a doubt they never again want my vote.
And once again the worthless POS with no balls or backbone are going to screw the country, and do it on a Friday night hoping that no one notices.
May God help us and our Great Country.
PS – Specter’s phone line has been busy for hours.
Kill it, kill it, kill it.
Phone calls,e-mails,faxes blah, blah, blah. The overlords in DC could care less what the proletariat thinks. It is very ,very close to the time for the Townspeople to gather up their torches and pitchforks and get our point(excuse the pun) across once and for all!
Republicans have one shot to put themselves back into the game. Do not go along with this bill. Let the Dems go it alone and hang themselves with this massive spending non-stimulus bill.
Why can’t they just stop helping us?
Michael Steele are you making any phone calls to these repubics? We need a purge and get rid of these RINOs.
I really fear for my grandchildren. This is the jimmah carter redo on steriods.
GOD help us!
I was lied to back in 1969. I was told that I was being sent across the pond to a place called Vietnam to stop the spread of socialism and communism.
Was my 13 months “in-country” all in vein ?
Did 58,000 of my fellow Marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen under arms gave their lives for nothing, to have the left wing of America push us towards Marxism forty years later?
Michael Steele fired the entire RNC staff today. May not be too many people to make the calls.
It would be better if he said something on TV.
Sadly, yes.
What are the chances that there are not even 50 guaranteed Democratic votes for the Stimulus?
Suppose that there are, say 40 guaranteed Democratic votes, with another 10 contingent on getting enough Republican votes, with the intent of distributing blame when things go wrong?
Sen. Feinstein seems to have publicly given herself an exit, plus a link (HA? here?) to a Democratic Congressman who’s proposing his own stimulus package (about $176billion, no pork), suggests to me that more than a few Democratic Senators are very uncomfortable with passing the Stimulus along party lines.
2 or 3 Republicans might not be enough to get the needed Democrats to vote for the bill.
Keep the pressure on the Republicans, and as many Democratic Senators as possible.
Make everyone publicly accountable. We easily have a few more weeks to consider things.
Do we really have $
850900780 billion to spend? The amount of pork in the bill (looks to be $500billion+) says we don’t have even a $250billion problem (although someone might have friends to pay off who think differently). This bill could easily spell disaster in 2010 and 2012 for those who vote for it, as well as the country.
If this thing does not go through, it will actually say the American people have a voice. We can not let bho do this to our Republic. We have for over 200 years been free, now it is in harms way.
L
What would Reagan say?
“Mr. Government, tear down this bill!”
These “Republicans” are idiots. The Dems lard up this bill, then cut back on spending in return for giving up the one thing sure to work – tax cuts – just to get the bill back to where it was to start with. Minus some tax cuts.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
Idjits.

I agree. I am all for marching on that rats nest we call a capitol and knocking the damned buildings down, if we need to, in order to regain control of our government. Everything coming out of this administration is socialism and central control/planning. I will not live in a totalitarian country.
Time for a Million Pitchfork March and Torch Parade.
Getting through to Sen Collins and co-horts has been impossible. I have sent e-mails to all of their offices, plus re-dialing all over and over. If the Republicans do not vote down the so-called stimulus bill, if only two break ranks, then America will have taken the “sharpest LEFT-TURN” in history. Who knows what the final House/Senate Committee bill will have in it?? Pelosi changed House Rules to effectively shut down any opposition by the Republicans which also “squashes” all of our dissent. It will happen again. Send emails, faxes, and even telegrams to STOP the passage of the Senate bill. The only “common sense immediate solution” is the $450 Billion amendment offered by Republicans as a replacement for the pork-laden bill. Don’t give up trying to reach your Senators! Find a way! jb
Bet all those ” cuts ” are replaced in conference with extra pork.
BTW Where can Tar and Feathers be purchased ? I’ll supply the rail.
And what bird species ?
Just asking…
Our grandchildren in the future paying for condoms that were used and discarded back in 2009 or 2010 will leave them scratching their heads over what is about to be consumated(no pun intended I swear) here today. At the risk of my deceased mother washing my mouth out with soap I can’t say it/write it – but, It’s a royal cluster you-know-what.
I can’t believe I was actually reading drudge when it changed the headline to the news.
Looks like we have been sold the hell out for 780 BILLION dollars.
I just cannot believe what the people of this nation have so willingly done to themselves…and the rest of us.
Chicken feathers. There’s enough chicken houses throughout Arkansas and the rest of the south to supply enough to feather them all. Now we just need the sticky stuff. I am voting for hot pitch.
Take a $10 dollar retail item($7-cost)-price it at 15$,
put it on sale for 50% off and the shoppers will bowl each other over to get a great deal!
The Republicans that compromise will tell us what a great deal they made for us!
Who will buy all the debt, still $800 billion, needed to pay for Porkulus?
Rumors are the Fed will, which means the US government will print almost a trillion dollars it will then lend itself.
Zimbabwean style hyper-inflation seems the obvious result.
Which’ll be a handy excuse for price controls. Goes with wage controls Barney’s Frank is already proposing.
I don’t understand why none of the repubs are pointing out that massive spending and tax cuts are exactly the policies of the past 8 years.
Trying to equate the Bush Administration (and GOP controlled congress) as having a “tax cuts alone” policy is silly at best. Yes they did cut taxes, but then they spent like drunken sailors on weekend leave.
Sounds vaguely similar to what the dems are proposing only on steroids.
I am not upset because I kind of figured something like this would happen.
^^This^^
God save this country from Moderates.
At least Liberals are reliable.
I thought it was just in from me.

You get the idea.
The Feinstein quote was mangled by Fox News. What she really said was that she wasn’t going to vote for a bill with tax-cuts but without enough “job creation”.
Nor am I upset…more a feeling like when you are told your car was repo’ed when you have been making your payments, (Don’t ask). Just shaking head in disbelief that any organization could possibly be so incompetent and inept.
Hang tight apacherat, bitterness can be a strengh.
Remember who, what, where and the hell with the why. When the vote is posted I make my list of why I will not contribute to the RNC or the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Make a letter, save it and return it with all requests for money.
Not a penny to the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee or the RNC if the defectors are not expelled from the caucus.
Not a penny.
Shouldn’t we be hearing something from newly elected RNC Chairman M. Steele? How can any Republican in all good conscience vote for anything that even smells like pork, traitors, everyone that votes for this crapsandwhich.
Mr. Steele is in the Republican Party.
We (the choir) are in the Conservative Party.
This damn roller coaster ride the Senate is taking us on has had my stomach doing flip flops for the last couple of days. If this thing passes tonight I will be heading to Cabela’s in Boise tomorrow to pick-up a few more items before runaway inflation makes it no longer cost effective or affordable. Why the hell should I worry about being frugal and not carrying a balance on my credit card when our political overlords bankrupt the country? Hello Great Depression part II! The Weimar Republic and Zimbabwe style inflation is all we have to look forward to. I am with many others on this site that are pissed off and disillusioned. I can only call and e-mail my Senators so much, but both of mine have stated they will not support this disaster. Almost time to start the insurgency! Wolverines!
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒE (mo-lone lah-veh) Translation: Come and take them!
My husband told me this will pass it isn’t stoppable. I mentioned that the Republicans don’t have to vote for it though. This is a for gone conclusion so we know we are going to get stuck with this pig in a poke so how sick are we going to get from Porkus Giganticus?
Time to stuff the mattress?
Has anyone noticed any deflation locally? I noticed the price of bread is falling where I shop.
the gooberment should fear the people not the people fearing the gooberment….time for a huge tea party and then another 1776….
It is a done deal.
The Dems got the 60.
Kennedy is flying in from Florida to vote.
***********************
Senators have reached a tentative deal on a version of President Obama’s economic stimulus plan, including about $811 billion in spending and tax cuts, that will win enough Republican votes to move forward.
Sens. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Susan Collins of Maine appeared to be the critical Republicans to sign onto the bill, giving Democrats the 60 votes needed to advance to a final vote. Democrats also voiced confidence that Republican Sen. Olympia Snow of Maine also would vote for the plan.
********************************
We are so f****d.
It will take generations of Repub leadership to fix the damages.
Hey Michael Steele, you kicked out all of the RNC staff to have a fresh start. Now kick out these three rinos (lower case).
Roll the compromise up, and stick it up the BO Rino’s UNOWAT.
Ed Mahmoud abu al-Kahoul, thank you for showing your support of today’s democrat party.
Ha! Pink slips for Specter, Snowe, & Collins? How about some pink balls for Specter?
Search ebay for “specter pink slip”
How many times should a woman be slapped in the face before she realizes she is in an abusive relationship and needs to get out?
How long do we allow the party to ignore its own principles before we finally realize it’s dead? The GOP is going the way of the Whigs as we speak. And they are doing it of their own choice. They have repeatedly shown they want neither my money or my vote. So why should I give it to them?
“Not a penny to the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee or the RNC if the defectors are not expelled from the caucus.”
I’m guessing Mr. Steele is aware of how negatively fund raising will be impacted by any “Republicans” who vote for this thing.
