Senate Moderates Reach Tentative Stimulus Deal

A group of Senate moderates working on an amendment to cut up to $100 billion in spending from the economic stimulus package have completed a tentative proposal that will be presented to Senate Democrats at a 5:30 p.m. caucus meeting, Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad told reporters. “There is a proposal that is sufficiently fleshed out and we will have a caucus and discuss it,” Conrad said after emerging from talks in Senate Majority Leader Reid’s office. Democrats hope the proposal, developed by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Ben Nelson, R-Neb. [SIC], will attract several GOP supporters and be acceptable to all Democrats, which would allow for passage of the plan as early as tonight.

Details will be posted on CongressDaily’s Web at http://www.nationaljournal.com/congressdaily/ site as they become available.

***

Update: Sen. Feinstein was on Fox a bit ago declaring that she “reserves the right to vote no.” Hearing that Sen. Ben Nelson of Florida and Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia are a few of the other Democrats on the fence.

The White House is…bewildered.

What are the chances that there are not even 50 guaranteed Democratic votes for the Stimulus?

Suppose that there are, say 40 guaranteed Democratic votes, with another 10 contingent on getting enough Republican votes, with the intent of distributing blame when things go wrong?

Sen. Feinstein seems to have publicly given herself an exit, plus a link (HA? here?) to a Democratic Congressman who’s proposing his own stimulus package (about $176billion, no pork), suggests to me that more than a few Democratic Senators are very uncomfortable with passing the Stimulus along party lines.

2 or 3 Republicans might not be enough to get the needed Democrats to vote for the bill.

Keep the pressure on the Republicans, and as many Democratic Senators as possible.

Make everyone publicly accountable. We easily have a few more weeks to consider things.

Do we really have $850 900 780 billion to spend? The amount of pork in the bill (looks to be $500billion+) says we don’t have even a $250billion problem (although someone might have friends to pay off who think differently).

This bill could easily spell disaster in 2010 and 2012 for those who vote for it, as well as the country.

If the Republicans do not vote down the so-called stimulus bill, if only two break ranks, then America will have taken the “sharpest LEFT-TURN” in history. Who knows what the final House/Senate Committee bill will have in it?? Pelosi changed House Rules to effectively shut down any opposition by the Republicans which also “squashes” all of our dissent. It will happen again. Send emails, faxes, and even telegrams to STOP the passage of the Senate bill. The only “common sense immediate solution” is the $450 Billion amendment offered by Republicans as a replacement for the pork-laden bill. Don’t give up trying to reach your Senators! Find a way! jb

Trying to equate the Bush Administration (and GOP controlled congress) as having a “tax cuts alone” policy is silly at best. Yes they did cut taxes, but then they spent like drunken sailors on weekend leave.

Sounds vaguely similar to what the dems are proposing only on steroids.
