More dispatches from Kentucky
The Kentucky ice storm is still making life hard for residents. Reader Melissa e-mails an update:
I live in Marion, KY (Western KY). It is our 11th day without power or water. We have a well so when the power goes off…there goes the water. We get water from our neighbors. We have a generator so decided to plug up the computer to see what was going on.
The National Guard is here and is suppose to be checking on every home in Crittenden County. Big joke, we haven’t seen anyone in 11 days!!! There is very little communication except for what we get from our neighbors. Our town finally got power late Thursday so the stores can start back up.
Our town is a rural town and the unemployment rate is very high. People have spent more money than they have just trying to survive. I am sure the government will not even offer help to those individuals. We have heard that FEMA might help with the debris removal but that could take months.
Reader Julee e-mails:
Thank you for paying attention to this situation. I am amazed at how little coverage this is getting from the MSM.
I live in a small town in Muhlenberg county in Western Kentucky and work in Hopkins County. These two counties are still suffering major power outages.
I count myself very lucky because our power was out for only four days. Many people in both counties have been without power since Tuesday of last week. Those who live out in the country may be without electricity for up to a month abd many of those who are without power are also without water and phone service.
The Kentucky National Guard is here in force and has been going door to door to see if people need anything. I have also seen power crews from Indiana, Ohio, Alabama, Georgia, and New York. Both Muhlenberg and Hopkins counties are swarming with them, and they are a beautiful sight.
One thing I haven’t seen is FEMA. There are signs on the Western Kentucky Parkway that say “FEMA trucks exit here”, but the trucks themselves have yet to be seen. They don’t really seem to be missed though.
Most of the people around here seem to have a pretty positive attitude and are taking care of themselves. Many people have generators and/or kerosene heaters, and those who don’t are staying with family, friends, or in motels.
Everyone that I have encountered has a pretty positive attitude. They’re taking care of themselves and trying to help anyone they can.
Thanks again for thinking of us.
And reader Tim from Paducah adds:
What is impressive about this disaster in West Kentucky is the response of the people. Yes we do have power workers from other states helping our own workers restore power but forthe the most part people are just making it happen and not waiting around for the government, particularly the federal government, to help them because they know it’s not coming.
Yet no matter how inspiring the display of independence of Western Kentuckians to take care of business without the government liberals just can’t resist bringing politics into it by taking a cheap shot at President Bush. Here is an example from one of our local bloggers (Paducah Ice Storm Update and a Challenge from Sweden – link):
“Of the rapidity and effectiveness of this President’s response, in stark contrast to the Katrina victims who are still waiting.”
Excuse me, the messiah most merciful President Obama hasn’t done a damn thing and I resent the hell out of anyone saying he has assisted in this disaster. The excellent response to this disaster has everything to do wih the character and the spirit of Western Kentuckians and nothing to do with anyone in Washington; but how would a Northeastern liberal artist relocation program transplant know anything about character and spirit.

When will Hollywood be holding their televised fund-raiser and releasing their “We Are the World”-esque charity cd with all the proceeds going to the residents of Kentucky?
Oh wait….
Obama’s racist? Rhetorically speaking, that is. Figure it out.
Hey it’s just a bunch of hicks clinging to their guns and religion. Obama has more important things to worry about. Like ripping off my future grandkids.
On a side note; will be running through Kentucky later today on a load from Chicago down to Atlanta. Need to see if I can find a Wal-Mart with truck parking before then so I can try and pick up a few things for those in Kentucky.
How many billions can be saved every year desolving FEMA, obviously they don’t do their job. Why didn’t the whiny Katrina victims take care of themselves like the Kentuckians have? Answer, because their basically lazy, uneducated welfare takers with no pride in themselves.
I feel for you Kentuckians, bless you for your strength and responsibility to yourselves. Has anyone told their der leader there was an ice storm in Kentucky? What a worthless butt head.
All you lefties that use this site wheres yours compassionate, caring, problem solver now…you fools!
Odummy becoming president was no more than a marketing job.
Survival 101 says connect your generator to your well pump and you will no longer have to rely on others for your water.
Say, has Obama visited Kentucky?
Oh, that’s right, that was a state he lost, why bother going there.
My mom lives in my hometown (Madisonville — in Hopkins County) and she still does not have power. She has horses, but of course the well-pump does not work without power. She has to get jugs of water and haul them out to the farm so the horses will have water. It’s been a complete nightmare for her, but she cannot leave because of the animals. She hired some guys walking down the street to help her clear some limbs / trees. (One was local, one from Chicago.) She ended up getting in a political discussion with them — and educated them (probably quite a lot) about how government should work, and just what PBO and Congress are trying to force on us. She’s quite a feisty lady! I think they left with a different perspective — and a little extra $ in their pockets.
On the bright side, it’s been much warmer, so a lot of the ice is finally melting. Of course, that brings flooding concerns, but they just continue to deal with one crisis at a time!
One thing everyone needs to remember about this area is that they have dealt with a number of issues in the past few years. They had another ice storm (not as severe), a MAJOR tornado cut a swath through the county and demolished hundreds of homes, they had to deal with the remnants of a hurricane, and they have gone through two serious droughts. After every incident, the residents pick themselves up, help out their neighbors, and do what needs to be done. Some of the resilience they exhibit should be bottled and sent to all of the idiots who sit back and expect the government to take care of them.
Pretty much the same where I am from down in Arkansas. You know it amazes me that the ‘sophisticated’ elites look at places like Kentucky, Arkansas, etc as little more than inbred hicks good for nothing more than a punchline. But, when something goes wrong, we take care of our own. Neighbors helping neighbors.
Contrast that with “the Big Easy”, LA, or pretty much anywhere else people have bought into the myth that the government is there to take care of them.
Just a guess, but I would think that the generator is a standard small portable type that only produces 120vac and the well pump is more than likely 240vac or even 308.
Iowa and its neighbors had many storms and floods last spring and early summer. FEMA was there, and after the Little Sioux Scout Ranch damaged our farm, someone gave us forms to apply for financial aid. We took care of the damage without government help, but it was nice to know government representatives were there. It is quite a change from Obama’s FEMA.
Last fall, I did something I have never before done. I voted a straight Republican ticket. As weeks pass, I am increasingly glad I did.
Great line! LOL, ROLFLOMAO or what ever you say in computer script.
Reading these stories coming out of Kentucky REMINDS ME OF THIS
There’s some awesome folk in KY, no doubt about it
Yep, they were smart enough to NOT vote for “the One”
Why haven’t we heard a peep out of Ray Nagen? Oops, no “chocolate cities” in Kentucky, just inbred hicks clinging to their guns and religion. Fortunately, they also cling to such other “antiquated notions” as self-reliance.
And where is Obama while this is going on? He’s helping out by cranking up the heat in the White House so the TVA doesn’t lose money because Kentuckians aren’t “using” as much electricity to heat their shacks.
Thanks for the update Michelle.
The One has only been in office for days, his on the job training hasn’t even started, he’s still celebrating the victory handed to him by ACORN. Of all those who held the office before him, only that lecher, Klinton, was equal to Obama’s ineptitude.
God Bless those that are still affected in KY and the other states by the recent ice storms…they are a hearty people, and like their ancestors, they will persevere.
AS for Barry and his liberal friends – where’s the telethons for disaster relief? How about Federal Aid/FEMA??? Has Barry flown over the area in a National Guard helo yet? How about Michelle…has she gone and visited??? DO they know where KY is???
Yea…thought so….
FEMA has sent some of those tasty MRE’s, though they have warned people not to eat the Peanut Butter ones as they probably contain Salmonella. Other than that, Kentuckians haven’t gotten emergency trailers, pre-paid visa cards without any ID requirement (that would be racist… remember?) and they haven’t gotten any free hotel rooms to wait out the lack of heat and water. They haven’t gotten a fraction, per capita, of the aid that Katrina victims got.
Oh yeah.. Here’s a story over at Sweetness and Light. Katrina victims may be facing an end to their federal rent aid programs. Katrina struck in 2005… and they’re still getting aid while Kentucky doesn’t get jack.

I don’t think Obama knows where Kentucky is. He got confused because he thought it was in the 51-57 states. Personally, I don’t think the government is interested in you people. There isn’t any power or votes to be gained. There are more important things for a corrupt government to be handling…like spending your money for power and votes, and making sure the terrorists are cared for like distinguished guests. But, my prayers are with you. I know country living (Iowa, Texas, Vermont) so I can understand what is happening there. I bet there are still people in New Orleans complaining about lack of government “help”. You are good people; my hat is off to you.
The One™ doesn’t care about giving aid to Kentucky because they cling to their guns and Bibles too much.
I don’t think the good folk of Kentucky ever consider themselves victims.
That’s what sets them apart and makes them great.
240…. 241…. whatever it takes
—————–
I have been watching with some amazement on all the MSM news channels – Why are all of those inbred Kentucky hics shooting at the rescuers who are flying in on the helicopters to save them?????
And I just dont get it as to why there are roving bands of hoodlums shooting at the police/National Guard and looting their neighbors!!?!?!!?
HEY!! If you people want help – then dont try to kill the people that are there to SAVE YOU!!
(oh wait, wrong disaster…. I was watching my DVR not live TV, sry)
Thank you #4. I was called a racist for pointing out that the people of Kentucky and surrounding areas are
helping themselves rather than sitting around waiting
for handouts. These are the kind of people that my
family descended from…self sustaining (as much as
possible/neighbor helping individuals) and I make no
apologies about thinking that the gimmee side of
society is just not as desirable as these people from
Kentucky, Arkansas and such states.
These Western Kentuckians are some of those bible clinging, gun toting rednecks according the “One”. Our local electric power company has sent three crews up to help these people get their power back on. We had a similar ice storm 10-12 years ago, and the Kentuckians were here to help us. We overcame our ice storm and with God’s help we will help the Kentuckians to overcome theirs. Hang in there, these are the people that made America great.
Yesterday (Friday) someone on Fox (Bill Hemmer?) was talking to Kentucky’s Lt. Governor and pressing hard on the problems we’ve all heard of and the Lt. Governor was basically saying everything was hunky-dory as far as government response, Obama declaring it a disaster area, the biggest mobilization of generators ever…I told my Mom, wonder what party he is…looked it up and yes, a Dem.
If this had happened while Bush was president it would be “on top” of the news. With Obama it is an afterthought. You could ask where is FEMA and everybody else but obviously these aren’t unemployed trash that vote democratic so nobody cares.
Note to self… when the revolution/civil war starts… head to Kentucky. After this episode, no one in Kentucky should care much for Obama. And they’ve proven they can take care of themselves. But then again, why do I need to worry about the little pansy liberals where ever I am.
As per et #5 and hunter #9: Where do you put the generator? We got hit with a blue northerner and the temp dropped to 9 degrees. Since no one was home at the time the water wasn’t left running. By the time I got home, the water was off. I called the pump man and was #99 on the list to thaw us out. 5 days later–our ice plug was thawed out, even though the temps had returned to the 40s. It is a bit more complicated than just turning on the generator.
Not everyone in LA. The people in our community took care of each other. Don’t believe everything you may have seen or heard in the media.
I saw this story yesterday. Unbelievable. These are the people who give us all a bad name.
jag5775…I feel your pain. We were out 2wks after hurricane Andrew and about the same for Katrina. Our situation was opposite of yours. We were in sweltering heat, with nearly 90% humidty with unrelentant mosquitoes. My heart goes out to all of you. We will be praying for you.
BINGO!!!!
I am proud to have Eastern KY hillbilly blood-lines on both sides of my pedigree. Some of the finest folks I know hail from those parts. I also had the privilege of living in Western KY for a few years and have some really good friends from that end of the state.
Country folk’ may speak with a southern accent, may not have a high school diploma (let alone a college education), but they will give you the shirt off their back (after they feed you a good meal). Salt of the earth.
Those upper-crust, Ivy Leaguer, ‘blue-bloods’ can choke on their brie and caviar. Give me the ‘fried chicken, grits & gravy’ crowd any day of the week.
