The generational thieves reach a deal; GOP conferees frozen out

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 11, 2009 11:38 AM

This just in from CongressDaily:

House and Senate leaders have struck a tentative deal on a stimulus package with a top-line figure of $789.5 billion, Democratic aides said this morning. The overall mix of funding and tax provisions remains to be hashed out. One disappointment for President Obama is likely to be a scaled-back “Making Work Pay” tax credit of $400 for individuals and $800 for married couples, which falls short of his goal of $500 and $1,000. But those figures would still meet Obama’s goal of providing a tax credit to 95 percent of working families. Conferees are scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. today, although that will largely be a formality. Democratic aides said House Speaker Pelosi intends to bring the bill to the floor Thursday, followed by Sente passage Friday.

House GOP staff have blown the whistle on the backroom wheeling and dealing that froze out the GOP conferees:

It appears that Pelosi and Reid staff met all through the night in secret with Democratic conferees’ staff to cobble together the “stimulus” conference report. Republican conferees were frozen out.

The objective appears to be to produce a final conference report on the trillion-dollar spending bill by this afternoon so that floor action can take place in both chambers by Thursday.

They intend to ram this trillion-dollar spending bill through with as little debate and scrutiny as possible.

The House voted unanimously yesterday in support of a Republican measure stating that the American should have 48 hrs to review the bill prior to passage. Will Democrats follow through? Or will they do the opposite of what they voted to do yesterday?

RedState has more details from GOP Rep. Tom Price on the freeze-out.

Most ethical, bipartisan, transparent Congress ever, right?

It punishes everyone who makes a decent living and tries to do right. It gives away houses to people who cannot afford to pay for them. It does nothing to help people who actually pay for their mortgages on time. All of us and our children and grandchildren will be paying for this boondoggle for years to come. Last week I read about New Hampshire’s HR6 (I think)

Here is a copy if you haven’t seen it:

    New Hampshire’s HRC 6
Seems that those doggone Constitutionalists up in New Hampshire are pulling Washington’s chain again with a piece of legislation called HRC 6. Basically, the New Hampshire bill would tell the federal government to take a hike on matters where power has not been given to the feds. Specifically:
“That any Act by the Congress of the United States, Executive Order of the President of the United States of America or Judicial Order by the Judicatories of the United States of America which assumes a power not delegated to the government of United States of America by the Constitution for the United States of America and which serves to diminish the liberty of the any of the several States or their citizens shall constitute a nullification of the Constitution for the United States of America by the government of the United States of America. Acts which would cause such a nullification include, but are not limited to:
    I. Establishing martial law or a state of emergency within one of the States comprising the United States of America without the consent of the legislature of that State.
II. Requiring involuntary servitude, or governmental service other than a draft during a declared war, or pursuant to, or as an alternative to, incarceration after due process of law.
III. Requiring involuntary servitude or governmental service of persons under the age of 18 other than pursuant to, or as an alternative to, incarceration after due process of law.
IV. Surrendering any power delegated or not delegated to any corporation or foreign government.
    V. Any act regarding religion; further limitations on freedom of political speech; or further limitations on freedom of the press.
VI. Further infringements on the right to keep and bear arms including prohibitions of type or quantity of arms or ammunition; and
That should any such act of Congress become law or Executive Order or Judicial Order be put into force, all powers previously delegated to the United States of America by the Constitution for the United States shall revert to the several States individually. Any future government of the United States of America shall require ratification of three quarters of the States seeking to form a government of the United States of America and shall not be binding upon any State not seeking to form such a government; and
That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the house clerk to the President of the United States, each member of the United States Congress, and the presiding officers of each State’s legislature.’

Indeed. Three “rights” make a left.

Something that I wonder about for those folks who abstained from voting who may have voted for McCain, I wonder what they are thinking about their actions today?

I repeat, where is McCain’s traitorous “gang of 14″ now? Why aren’t his friends helping us in the spirit of bipartisanship?

THAT is why it was not a mistake to vote 3rd party which is what those who stayed at home should have done. It would have been worse had McCain won and we were now fighting his multiple gangs over this bailout boondoggle.

How in the hell do almost 300 million Americans tolerate this crap from roughly 300?

Even stupid people can see that this is a crock of crap and is anything but governing or leadership. It’s a morally bankrupt power play – and I hope it comes back to bite them.

I just hope the damage isn’t irreversible, although I think that is their intent this time. Make it as hard to fix as possible.

    All Too Predictable [John Derbyshire]

A wee bit of Stimulus-related chicanery, from a well-placed reader:

John — The House version of the bill apparently had a requirement that business recipients of stimu-moolah use E-verify when they hired, to make sure that the jobs being created did not go to folks who are not here legitimately, job creation being, after all, the ostensible point of the undertaking. The Senate quietly snipped that bit out of its version.
Is anyone surprised by this? The notion that actual U.S. citizens have any special claim on the federal government’s attention, is long gone. Ours is a government of the whole world. For it to privilege U.S. citizens in any way would be nativist. (Everybody jump up on nearest chair, clutch skirts, and shriek.)

So, the GOP folks are being “frozen out”. At least, they won’t get any more of the blame when this “stimulus” doesn’t stimulate anything. The midterm elections are already looking more interesting…

    So Far, Amateur Hour

The first however-many days of Barack Obama’s presidency have been a study in amateurism.

Many suspected that Obama wasn’t quite ready, but kept their fingers crossed. Optimistic disappointment is the new holding pattern.

What’s missing from Obama’s performance isn’t the intelligence that voters acknowledged in electing him. It’s the experience they tried to pretend didn’t really matter. Experienced politicians, after all, got us into this mess.

Absent is maturity — that grown-up quality of leadership that is palpable when the real deal enters a room…
