Thou shalt not mock Obama

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 11, 2009 10:52 AM

Imagine the ACLU-led uproar if this suspended trooper had e-mailed photos mocking George Bush and Republicans on his own time and on his own computer:

An Iowa State trooper who was investigated after it was shown that he forwarded an e-mail showing mug shots of people wearing Obama t-shirts has been suspended for 30 days.

Sgt. Rodney Hicok was at home and off-duty when he forwarded the e-mails, said an official with the Iowa Department of Public Safety Bureau and Professional Standards.

The e-mail made disparaging remarks about 15 people in the photos and referred to Obama as having “quite a fan base.”

Hicok was not making a racial statement, the official said, but, rather, a political statement.

In a statement, Hicok said, “I am deeply sorry for my actions … I apologize to anyone this e-mail may have offended, as well as my family, citizens in my community and Iowa taxpayers.”

Hicok ended his statement by saying he guaranteed “nothing like this will ever happen again.”

My question is – and it’s not addressed in the newspiece – were the mugshots taken at HIS department? In other words, did he take what was PD/Municipal/County property (the mugshots) and distribute them from home? Or – were these mugshots just something he found on the internet or something? If it’s the former, then I can see a problem. If it’s the latter – this is a bunch of BS and he got screwed.

    Amen to that. Also:

Hicok was not making a racial statement, the official said, but, rather, a political statement.

Therein lies the rub; we can no longer make a political statement WITHOUT making a racial statement because of what the color of our President’s skin happens to be. Unless you don’t give a rat’s a@@ about being called “racist” when you know in your heart you are not, the “new commandment” applies.

And, yes, I have my doubts that he would have gotten the same reaction had he done the same thing to Former President Bush.

He violated the department’s policy and his permanent file will reflect the suspension, the official said.

My guess is that the policy either: a)prohibits using one’s work email for political activities, or b) prohibits him from using the mug shots that would not otherwise be publicly available.

If that’s the policy, then that’s the policy and he should be aware of it. It was a judgment lapse on his part.

However, if this stuff happens all the time with no punishment, with the only difference being that those pictured aren’t wearing Obama gear. Then it’s clearly a double standard.

As it stands, I can’t jump on the actively silencing dissent wagon for this case, yet.

I doubt that! Race really isn’t as big of a deal to most white people. To many African Americans it’s all about being black. I don’t recall white people asking Obama what specifically is he going to do for them. That’s the number one question for many African Americans. What are you going to do for us! If that is a crime, then we are in even more peril than I feared. I can see someone who was angered by the e-mail telling on him to his superiors. But it should have sufficed to tell him not to do that any more. A 30-day suspension is over the top.

Funny, because most of the media (read: ALL) really downplayed the biracial thing and focused on the “black” part of his heritage.

it doesn’t mean any problems he has as a president will “hurt” other black people.

But it will hurt the grievance monger, affirmative action groups that look past nothing but race.

This may surprise you, but most people don’t give a crap about race. Most people wouldn’t cast a whole race in a negative light, or cause them to be “hurt” just because a creepy or ineffective president shares the same or similar racial background.

Yes, most people don’t. I totally agree. Those people are often called “conservatives” who prefer to judge by the content of one’s character rather than the color of one’s skin. People who oppose racial quotas in hiring, or college acceptance, or other government/business policy.

Most liberals don’t do that. In fact, they perceive any argument based on one’s behavior and actions as automatically “racist” (or “homophobic” or some other pejorative labeling us “bigots” for disagreeing with X behavior that has nothing to do with a person).

58 million of us were told in during the election that the only reason we wouldn’t vote for Obama ultimately came down to us being a bunch of closeted, Jim Crow lovin’ racists.

Another common trick is for the dishonest to use a name where they substitute 0 (zero) for the letter o in an already registered name. Most folks will miss that subtle switch.

    Yep.
This yet again re-re-reconfirms what I’ve said a number of times:
The fact that everyone’s vote counts just the same as that of everyone else is at the same time our nation’s greatest strength; and its greatest, possibly but hopefully not, fatal weakness.

58 million of us were told in during the election that the only reason we wouldn’t vote for Obama ultimately came down to us being a bunch of closeted, Jim Crow lovin’ racists.

This biggest strawman argument of the election season is based on the baseless assumption that Obama supporters think that non-Obama supporters were/are racist. It’s nonsense.

Blacks will be hurt because Obama is the first black POTUS and therefore is supposed to set a standard for the blacks. He is creepy and socialistic and will hurt the entire country, blacks most of all because he was supposedly their modern-day MLK,Jr. The question should be, how would this NOT hurt blacks?

It would be nice if you let MC answer this question for herself, but it’s sweet of you to attempt read her mind. Blacks have always voted overwhelmingly for democrats, and certainly a black canditate got more of them to the polls. He isn’t setting any type of standard, and I haven’t heard any talk of him being some modern day MLK. Obama doesn’t “set any type of standard” for black people, and it’s not 1947. A future black candidate won’t be hurt due to any failures on the part of Obama. Your definitions of blacks being hurt are vague and rhetorical, not to mention outdated. You underestimate this society’s thinking in terms of race. IMHO.

I’ve been reading this blog for over two years. A poster like you tends to catch one’s eye when they say things about Obama “diddling” a white girl while in office. I think your MJ went the way of Dakine, Rusty, Watershed, and other bored posters who found this site less compelling after a liberal took the whitehouse. I saw a lot of liberals get themselves banned, or simply “move on”. I find this site to be interesting, at least until I decide to move on. I believe your beloved Undrseige included a number after it’s name, sorta like Bear1909 does. I decided on this name when I registered over, Bear, CryhippyCry, and MrMissSheryl. There’s so many crazies to choose from. :)

So MC, who will be the white woman Obama cheats on Michelle with? How long will it take to occur? Will you eat your race fixate words once it never happens? Do you think calling me “underwear” is clever, or are you just trying it out until you come up with an insult less juvenile?

Good, Jon Stewart is just doing his job. It doesn’t matter who the president is. Shows like the Daily Show and SNL will always mock the president, and we’re all better and more entertained for it.

    IOWA- Idiots Out Walking Around

These photos have been kicking around the internet since last fall, when they were sent to me they were described as Chicago Police Dept. photos. The seriousness of this case comes from the official’s statement that “Hicok was not making a racial statement, the official said, but, rather, a political statement.”

In Iowa it is now against some amorphous regulation for a state employee to make a “political statement” in his home using his personal computer if the powers that be in Iowa object to the statement. If the good people of Iowa would quit coming to Chicago our local culture of corruption wouldn’t so easily rub off on them.

I made my own version of that e-mail and sent it out to my friends, only I called it “Obama’s Cabinate”. I had to explain it to one left leaning friend and she thought it was funny. Another sent me an n-word filled “reply all” screed calling me a racist. I refused to apologize though and demanded one from him. That was back in December, haven’t heard from him since.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been tempted to send that friend an e-mail full of links concerning Team Obama’s legal problems but I don’t want to hear the excuses.

You have me for 8,10 or 12 hours, during which time in exchange for compensation I agree to act as society’s garbage man and deal with people and things polite society would rather not, and abide by departmental rules and policies.

I did not, and would not, give up my constitutional rights when I put on that uniform, certainly not my right to free speech. What I do, at home, on my time, short of criminal activity, is MY business and is not subject to departmental regulation. Period.

Let’s be clear: speaking critically of an Arab by blood president of the united states is no more a racial statement than speaking of white boy Bush.

if the motive of the person speaking is to belittle the Arab by blood President of the United States becausehe is Arab by blood, then it is racially motivated and therefore race-ist.

Same principle applies to belittling Sarah Palin because she is female- and therefore NOT male- it is a sex-ist statement.

Make no mistake however, that being racist and/or sexist is POLITICAL.
