If you’re overdosing on all the fawning, endless Obama/Lincoln comparisons today, Bruce at MassBackwards has penned a little comic relief.

February 12, 2009Three weeks and two days ago our community organizers and voter fraud operatives brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Socialism, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created to be subservient to their government.
Now we are engaged in a great class war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave up their individual liberty that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The gullible voters, living and dead, who were bamboozled here, have consecrated it, far above the diminished power of the people to detract. The media will little note, nor long remember what we are actually doing here, nor will it ever admit what they did here. It is for us the powerful centralized government, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so fraudulently advanced. It is rather for us, the ones we have been waiting for, to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these uneducated, unskilled masses we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these useful idiots shall not have voted, however many times, in vain — that this nation, under Me, shall have a new birth of HopenchangeTM — and that government of the lobbyists, by the politically-connected, for the career politicians, shall not perish from the earth.”

President Obama has urged supporters to help the United States remain “the last, best hope of Earth.” He has ordered staff members to “think anew and act anew.” And he has assailed the “worn-out dogmas” of political ideology.
Each time, his words were reminiscent of those of Abraham Lincoln.
Obama, like so many of his predecessors, wants to link himself to one of history’s greatest presidents.
“He sees Lincoln as a model,” said Fred Kaplan, author of “Lincoln: The Biography Of A Writer.” “Obama echoes Lincoln.”
Also, as the nation’s first black president, Obama can “suggest he’s helping to complete the unfinished work of American democracy that Lincoln spoke about at Gettysburg,” said Harold Holzer, a historian and co-chair of the United States Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
Wednesday evening, Obama honored Lincoln at a gala at Ford’s Theatre, the recently renovated hall where Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Thursday the president will discuss Lincoln again as he travels to Springfield, Ill., for the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth…
…Obama borrows Lincoln’s phrases and pacing. In June, when he clinched the Democratic nomination, Obama urged backers to see this as “the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope of Earth.”
The phrase comes not from a Lincoln speech, but from his written 1862 message to Congress, in which he urged members to continue backing the war to save the Union: “We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”
Obama outlined his admiration for Lincoln in a 2005 essay for Time magazine. He cited Lincoln’s “humble beginnings,” as well as his “rise from poverty, his ultimate mastery of language and law, his capacity to overcome personal loss and remain determined in the face of repeated defeat.”
Obama’s Lincoln-mania has drawn critics over the years.

I loved the little thing in the bottom right corner on CNN this morning: “From Lincoln to Obama”. What an insult to one of freedom’s best men.

Like Obama, Lincoln was not a true believer in anything other than government power. He did not want to free the slaves, and indeed did not free any slaves in the Union(and they did exist)…only outlawed the practice in the South, which he did not control at the time. He did it to label plantation owners lawbreakers and the average Southerner a supporter of slavery so it would be easier to justify going to war to keep the South from seceding. The enemies list Obama is working on is made up of Republicans, conservatives, constitutionalists,talk radio, free marketers, the wealthy, CEOs…even Jessica Simpson! He has chosen Pakistan’s favor over India’s and has only chided Israel, not defended her. This is truly change…we can believe in it…but will we survive it?

jjmurphy: At best. I see it as posturing after the fact. He should have been kicking butt while the battle was on. Anybody can stand on the dead bodies and make speeches. Steele is just like all of the GOP candidates who stood by and watched while the amnesty bill battles were in high gear. Any one of them, particularly Romney and Thompson, could have seized the nomination had they jumped in. They waited for events to pass which is not the trademark of a leader. Leaders don’t watch events, they shape them .
What a poseur. Lincoln actually accomplished something. O’Boingo is a cartoon-like veneer with all the depth of a character on a TV sit-com. This dimwit has never had a real job in his life, and his incoherent answers to even planted questions at his farcical so-called press conferences demonstrate a disordered thinking process and a failure to grasp the significant elements of even basic economics. Their whole origin was a theory that man is actually regressing rather than evolving. Kind of a put-on, but entertaining. We’re talking about big time gun control here..if no guns can be transported on any Interstate Highway…where is the NRA??? You must realize what this means. I mean, this is extremely serious! Doesn’t anyone else see this? Am I overreacting?
I first developed a love for my country because it honors the freedoms which were bestowed upon me by God Himself. The fact that it honors those freedoms fuels my continuing love for my country.
I will not sit still while these freedoms are no longer honored. They are being slowly taken from us, one by one. Soon many of our fellow Americans will be just like today’s western Europeans – unwitting slaves to every whim of the nanny state.
These freedoms are not the government’s to take. The government exists because we allow it to exist; it’s not the other way around.
Are you with me? Call and write your representatives and senators. Repeatedly. Vote them out of office. Run for office yourself! DO SOMETHING!
Sadly, I think many of us became politically complacent during the Bush administration, and the result is the government we now have. We can’t let this happen again. We have to start working toward 2010 now.
I took one of my rifles with me to from NC to ME by car this past summer. I checked the “rules of the road” before I left and was amazed by the potential landmines that CURRENTLY exist when transporting your own firearms. This includes all firearms. You can get in some serious trouble if you are stopped for ANY reason.
The big risk at the moment is the individual state and city laws in the jurisdictions you drive through, particularly if you have ammo AND the firearm in the same car. I decided to just bring the rifle and buy ammo in Maine.
The NRA site had some pretty good info on the topic, but it was still pretty frightening that it is so hard to take your own firearms with you on a trip.

President Lincoln was the second best president in my calculations. He had a very difficult job–to try to keep our country intact while fighting a civil war. He had to be pretty tricky to get what he wanted.

The best president to me seems to be George Washington. A lot of this is due to his iron will to give us a decent country. First as the war leader, and later as one of the main forces behind our Constitution. He risked his life and fortune for this.

Jimmy Carter seems to be the worst president (and ex president) I can remember or read about. Clueless as to the main job of a president–to defend our people against all enemies foreign and domestic. Newsflash Google: Darwin isn’t the reason the banks and post offices and schools will be closed on Monday.
My Virginian ancestors lived in the Shenandoah Valley and farmed all their lives (they were Brethrens and did not believe in slavery). They wanted to stay out of the war, and none of our men joined the CSA until the Imperial Federal Government sent troops into the Valley to rape, kill, pillage and burn them out. Some fled to what is now West Virginia only to be greeted by Federal troops who manned the ballot boxes during Lincoln’s reelection to make sure they voted correctly. After the war some returned to the Valley to rebuild and were still persecuted by an overbearing and vengeful Federal government. What is happening now began then, and only when the power of Federal government is restrained will we be free. The sovreignty of the states held it back before 1861. Once “States’ Rights” was criminalized the People lost their ability to control their government. I fear for the future, for as a Southerner I have heard the stories all my life of the damage one man peddling “Change” was able to inflict upon the land and the People.
So, the Jimmy Stewart movie “Shenandoah” has significant basis in fact after all….

Sorry, never mean to insult our own but I have been to Gettysburg and most of the other Civil War and Revolutionary Battle Fields. I was always proud of those great men who gave so much to give us this nation and to keep it-yes even the Colored Regiments as they were called then.
But Mr. Lincoln’s House IS divided against it’s self- a divide of Race and Ideology that I do not believe can be breached. Our Great Constitution is being taken apart and discarded, our History is ignored or lied about.
Sorry Flyoverman I do not wish to offend but I have at least some idea of what those great men at Gettysburg went through–I served two tours in Viet Nam including the 68 Tet Offensive and A Shau Valley and have seen battle, terrible battle. That war was most certainly fought in vain. The Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 was a dark day for me and mine.
And those American traitors who cheered the fall are now in control of the White House, both Houses of Congress, the Media, Academia and elsewhere. Much of my own family disowns me for my views on illegal immigration, the Black community is becoming more like Reverend Jeremiah Wright than less.
Stirring words to be sure. But this country chose another path not I. Those men who died in all those terrible battles did not fight for a Constitution and Union of “Negative Rights”, to surrender their rights as freemen to some esoteric Grievance Industry, to be called Dead White Racist or to be Citizens of the World.
Yes I will continue to be involved in the Political process and work to take back my country. I HAVE voted the last time for the Lesser of Two Evils for it is the Evil of Two Lessers. Don’t worry…it is fiction and, unlike the movies of today doesn’t try to pass itself off as historical fact. They generally didn’t do that back when Hollywood actually had morals and principles. Today…not so much. Just view the movie knowing it is based on fact, but ficionalized and enjoy it. You will be glad you did.

A note to those fearing an impending attack on gun rights. The word I am getting is that pushing for gun control is considered by the Dem leaders to be a pointlessly foolish exercise. I even saw a quote from Barney Frank recently defending NY’s newly-appointed Democrat senator for being a life-long NRA member arguing that there is plenty of room in the party for responsible gun owners. The lesson from Gore losing to Bush because he lost his home state over gun rights was not lost on these guys.
Everyone’s got bigger fish to fry. Gun ownership is not exclusive to Republican voters. For now, we are probably safe but who knows.

The ONLY thing Obama might end up having in common with Abraham Lincoln, is that during parts of the war, Lincoln was almost certainly even more unpopular than Bush.
He also compared himself to Reagan during the campaign.
The comparison to FDR is much more accurate, but only in terms of the socialist policies.
The most accurate comparison so far remains Jimmy Carter.
Civil War is one of the paths from stage 3 to stage 4 in the Soviet process of Ideological Subversion. (The other path is invasion by a Communist power, but that is not likely in this country).
I don’t really want to say this, but I believe Obama fully intends to lead this country into Civil War. You can already see signs of this.
I believe Obama sees himself as a Civil War President. Those who fight to support and defend our Constitution will battle those who fight to “Change it, Rearrange it”. I believe Obama sees himself as the “dear leader” who will bring about Communist “Normalization”.

Obama has nothing in common with African Americans despite being half cast (UK term for people half white half black). He has no connection to the African American experience in this country. His father was a foreign student from Kenya, that’s all – and he was brought up rather as a privileged kid actually . Where is his African American ancestry to connect him to Lincoln? To clarify: I was referring to the malicious wish of death on another person (i.e., President Obama because of objections to the way he’s running the country).
Being willing to harm/kill another when you are in a kill-or-be-killed kind of situation is a whole ‘nother thing. Islamic extremists and anyone else who wishes to attack us need to be locked up and, if need be, killed to stop them from hurting anyone.

You have written not-so-eloquently about your wish for the violent death of the President and how we need to “GRAB OUR GUNS AND MARCH ON DC.” This country is great because we don’t have to do that. All we have to do is vote them out. We voted them in, so we have to deal with it for 2, 4, or 6 years, depending upon whom we are addressing.
Also, it’s the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution, that says, “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” The Declaration of Independence was just that. A declaration from one group of people to another. I believe it, I love it, but one must acknowledge that it is not a document that creates or establishes any type of law. It’s not a legal document of any kind, actually.
That said, you’re ignoring the first step in the very phrase you quoted. The first choice offered is to alter the government. I think you’ll agree that for a couple of centuries we had a pretty good thing going. There is no need to abolish this government and start over. You’d be throwing the baby out with the bath water! We can work for REAL change to begin in 2010 by electing a new Congress.
Our job as faithful citizens is to vehemently oppose the ideas of elected leaders which contradict those ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence upon which this country was founded. We must point out to anyone who will listen when they ignore the Constitution to advance their political agenda. We live in an age where we can still revolt with our votes and with our political activism. Our weapons are not necessary. The real power still lies with We the People.
