An American kidnapped in Quetta
Please keep American John Solecki in your prayers. Somehow, I don’t think more “dialogue” and “compassion” are going to help him:
Kidnappers threatened on Friday to kill an American employee of the United Nations within 72 hours and issued a grainy video of the blindfolded captive saying he was “sick and in trouble.” A letter accompanying the video delivered to a Pakistani news agency said the hostage, John Solecki, would be killed unless authorities released 141 women it said were being held in Pakistan.
The video and the demands indicated that Solecki, the head of the U.N. refugee agency in Quetta, a city near the Afghan border, was alive and that his captors wanted to negotiate.
Solecki, who appeared blindfolded and with a shawl draped over his shoulders in the 20-second clip, said his message was addressed to the United Nations.
“I am not feeling well. I am sick and in trouble. Please help solve the problem soon so that I can gain my release,” he said.
The kidnappers have identified themselves as the Baluchistan Liberation United Front, suggesting a link to local separatists who have waged a long insurgency against Pakistan’s government rather than to the Taliban or al-Qaida, which are fighting U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
Still, the death threat heightened fears for Solecki’s safety, coming just a week after Taliban militants apparently beheaded a Polish geologist abducted in another border area of Pakistan after the government failed to respond to demands for a prisoner release.

I don’t understand, this man should be siding with his captors and professing that if they decide that he should die it is for the greater good. He should be happy that his death would further expose the right wing racist agenda. He should be proud that he would be martyred in the name of United Nations peace.
I don’t have a lot of faith in the UN to negotiate his release. I expect Obama will just sit on his hands.

During the election, Obama stated that we should invade Pakistan. I fear that the wolves see a paper tiger.
For the man and his family I am sorry; I doubt that there is anything we can do to gain his release. The Pakistani Government could deal with the Baluchistan Liberation United Front but that would encourage more kidnappings of foreign nationals.
Dealing with terrorist and criminals is always a bad idea. If the Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence-ISI- knew where the man was they might mount a rescue but the ISI is as radical as muslim groups can be.
I think John Solecki is on his own. That is one dangerous part of the world.

Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband. “She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th.
The only positive spin that Muzzammil Hassan could possibly put on this is that he was caught up in Valentines Day spirit – they just celebrate it different in Pakistan.

Also, yes this man is an American, but he was not forced to work for the UN, I can make a very educated guess as to his ideology and views of America, and at least before he was kidnapped and needs the help of our great country, I think they were quite different than mine. Sometimes people reap what they sow.

I don’t know what this man’s ideology is and what the conditions of his employment are, so I can’t comment about whether he naively put himself in the position he is in, or not.
I will say that his chances of coming out of this alive are practically nil. And for that, I feel very sad for him. I can’t imagine the terror he is experiencing. And I pray I never will.
Did anyone notice that the acronym for the kidnappers is BLUF? I’ll pray for his release. Why can’t the UN peace-keepers go get this guy? Aren’t they highly regarded by kidnappers of Americans? Will Obama send in a SpecOps team to extract him? You know the kind you see on TV!! Where’s Jack Bauer??

When someone, ANYONE signs up for a job that puts them in harm’s way, they do so at their own peril. It is the responsibility of the UN and ONLY THE UN to provide for the health, welfare and security of that person on the job. It is no different than anyone else taking a job as an ex-pat for a foreign company.
That the UN is a flaccid, inept, corrupt and otherwise incompetent organization that is a black hole when it comes to money is of little matter. They do nothing well. At least one would think they would be able to provide security for their empoyees.
