Green homes for thee, but not for me
Across the pond, environmentalis bigwigs are just like our own president — preaching energy conservation while going hog wild in their own homes.
THEY may shout their green credentials from the rooftops, but some of Britain’s most prominent environmental champions are living in homes that produce up to half a ton of excess carbon dioxide a year.
An audit of properties, measuring heat loss, has revealed that Chris Martin, the pop star, Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, and Sir David Attenborough, the broadcaster, are among those who reside in homes that are “leaking” energy. Some lack even the most basic energy saving measures such as cavity wall insulation and double glazing.
Thermal images of the residences of 10 high-profile green campaigners found that their heat loss was either worse or no better than that found in the average family home.
Simon Hughes, the Liberal Democrat energy and climate change spokesman, owned the least energy-efficient property. He bought his £150,000 flat in Southwark, south London, 25 years ago but has failed to fit it with any significant insulation. Only last week Hughes unveiled plans to make every home in Britain energy efficient within the next decade. He could start with his own flat.
Bulk order of Snuggies, stat.

Forget about “clean” energy alternatives; how about bothering to do what they actually can right now?
In my lifetime, I doubt that I will use/waste as much energy as they already have.
Takes a lot of energy to power their egos.
Let them wear snuggies!!!
They’re stimulating the economy by spending more money on energy.
Really…
Otherwise they would be, like, totally green. I swear!
Morons need to start a club with Al Gore as its president. Hypocrite pigs.
They are waiting to convince the collective to fund the retro-fitting of their homes, like good little drones.
Chris Martin is married to the useless Gweneth Paltrow, isn’t he? How shocking that an obnoxious, preachy celebrity is a hypocrite.
It’s Gwyneth…Stupid.
Probably don’t pay their taxes either.
They’re all ‘bastard-coated bastards, with creamy bastard filling’.
To paraphrase Dr. Perry Cox.
Meanwhile, Prince Charles jets off to South America on an heroic mission to battle Global Warming, whilst spewing carbon from his private jet across the majestic, pristeen rain forrest. Inspiring…
but-but-but…I can’t be expected to update my 11th century Scottish castle can I? That’s so….common.
You lot are already common. Fit yours out properly. I’ve accumulated a lot of money to be able to live in this drafty, cold, one-loo, 25,000 sq. feet manse with servants’ quarters, stables, dove cote, rookery and carraige house….oops; almost forgot the vicarage!
those years at Eton failed me; my apologies: carriage
Oops. Pure laziness on my part. I could have googled her if I really gave a crap.
Didn’t misspell ‘useless’ though.

Nope, you didn’t. And your misspelling of Ms. Paltrow’s first name doesn’t make your point any less valid.
Oh, and let’s not forget Algore’s home here — which is a miniature white house, Greek columns and all.
And this farmhouse too. Look at all that grass that needs to be cut by a tractor or lawn mower.
I’m sure that’s much more house than the two of them need (Mr. and Mrs. Algore)
We can’t all live in trailers!

Ah, yes, the old “conservatives are trailer trash” stereotype; they must either be trailer trash or rich and, it goes without saying, greedy and heartless.
Hate to break this to you, Sean, Rosie and Cher are not political scientists.
Not my thoughts but thanks for calling me trailer trash anyway.

My apologies if I misunderstood; I took you post as an implication that anyone who would call these environmental activists out on their hypocrisy was conservative and therefore, lived in a trailer (trailer trash). I thought you were repeating a frequent stereotype, not referring in any way to yourself.
For the record; I do not think you are trash of any kind.
“you” = “your”.
My mother would be glad to hear that. Thanks
The age of the ultra-elitist ruling class is upon us.
Do as I say, not as I do!
The Greens/”Save the Planet” philosophy is wrong. Some of the most beautiful and elegant structures built by humans are not energy efficient — nor were designed to be. They are designed to be awed and admired and tease our senses and be lived in, not be souped-up trees. Unless we all want to live in dull uninspiring Thermos bottles, the solution is more _cheap_ energy, which we can effect over time. The bilgue of “Save the planet” is so bogus it’s unreal. When I was studying oceanography in the early ’70s, it was calculated if you shoved every landfill in the planet in one place it’d cover the area half the size of Vermont with several meters of (even non-recycled) trash. That’s –zit– compared to the total area of the Earth, and yet the schools are scaring students into the Green agenda by saying that trash will bury them! Another laughable thing I thought of this morning from this satelitte collision; the lax concern of falling space junk striking planes and the ground; junk that’ll be high orbiting Earth for thousands of years ready to spiral into someone’s backyard, yet the Greens have us all worked up over radioactive waste being deadly for thousands of years many thousands of feet deep the earth. Now unless we’re going to build condos down there, what’s the greater long term (and on-going) threat?
Save the Planet? Save some common sense!!
James Greenidge
Queens, New York
Let’s not forget the Prince of Co2 himself, Prince Charles. Yes, you heard right, the one who lives in Castles and flies in jets.
The Prince of hypocrites: Charles embarks on 16,000 mile ‘green’ crusade… aboard a private jet
James, As a enviro-nitwit, I must say it is not just the “GREENS” that are concerned about nuke waste but nutbags like the Dept. of Energy and the US military. What clowns they are.
And it’s not the “GREEN” agenda that scares the children, it’s the “GAY” agenda.
No, we are not building condos below thew earths surface, due to an over supply in Florida and Las Vegas.
And why do you want to bury Vermont (seriously, where dose Queens, NY trash go?).
And everyone knows that any dangerous space junk is dropped on Australia, the small stuff can be deflected with a simply foil hat.
Wouldn’t you know it? Just as I am about to mount my high horse and get all preachy like, the sun comes out. Now I have to move so my shadow doesn’t contaminate some micro-ecosystem or something. Oh wait! It’s starting to rain again. Maybe I have time to… nope can’t risk it. I might be polarizing sunlight like those evil skyscrapers and cause a bunch of migrating birds to end up in Cleveland or something. I don’t have to tell you about Cleveland.
I’ll check back in later once it’s safe.
I’m still waiting on a cogent point. Was it cut off or were you finished?
Darn it! Billions of migrating birds just crashed into my building!Just like the environmentalists predicted! Does that ever happen to you?
I swear, I spend half of each day shoveling bird carcasses.
Thanks for taking one for all those planes flying around.
I conserve because it helps my bottom line.
I guess these rich (eeeevil rich) liberals don’t need to conserve.
I still want a monolithic dome
genso: It’s the same story at the office. Every day, all day long, birds crashing into my window. I pay good money for that beautiful view of Mount Wilson. Stop the carnage! Carbon life forms are toxic!
Ha…you guys in California. But I always thought the bird problem was in Bodega Bay.

And that’s why abortion is sacred.

When you look at these turkeys, ya gotta respect a guy like Ed Begley, Jr.. He doesn’t go around telling other people how to live. He just lives his own life in a small house recycling pretty much everything. He lives the example he wants to set.
Speaking of Ed Begley, Jr., he and Bill Nye are next door neighbors and were featured recently in a local PBS segment about alternative energy. They compete with each other for the title of “most green house” and it boiled down to Ed Begley winning because he makes more money and has more to spend. Neither claim that it pays to be green. In fact, Nye was bitching about how expensive his solar panels are ($30,000 just to cover his garage).
So Obi’s point was dead on. Neither is a hypocrite. They are green at any cost and don’t claim that it is cheaper than buying electricity off the grid or using standard cars.

Nothing new here. Our oh so politically correct Hollywood types and their Malibue manses, Bel Air acreage, private jets, SUV’s etc. Algore’s huge place in Tennesse, his boy busted doing 100+ in damn Prius (who knew they would go 100 mph?).
Did you know that about 15 years ago, the Sierra Club, yes THE SIERRA CLUB, got busted for having an OPEN DAMN SEWER draining into a creek approximately 200 feet from one of their larger properties used by senior people in the organization? True story. Property was in a remote area of California and had no operational septic system. Just an underground pipe that discharged into a small stream.
Same old, same old. “Do as I say you should, not as I do and be quiet about what I do!”
Why do I get this vision of John Candy and Steve Martin turning into skeletons as they passed between two semi-trucks in the movie ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles‘?
It is unfortunate that the word “snob” really is not generally used much anymore. These people certainly fit the term.
The rules don’t apply to the Liberal Elite. They preach green, but they don’t practice what they preach. They say taxes are too low, yet they don’t pay their taxes. They claim that everyone should be equal, then they act like some are more equal than others. When it comes to the Liberal Elite, hypocrisy is not only forgiven, it is expected. But watch how loud they scream when they catch anyone else being a hypocrite.
The Liberal Elite are the “Looters” talked about in Atlas Shrugged. The Looters consist of men and women who use force to obtain value from those who produce it. They seek to destroy the producers despite the fact that they are dependent upon them. For the worst of them, the green movement is just a means to that end – to destroy the producers. That’s why they want to shutdown coal-fired plants and stop oil drilling and anything else that is a means to production.
When they finally realize they are committing suicide, they will allow just enought mining and drilling to maintain their own life styles, but the rest of the world will starve. Even the worst predictions for Global Warming will be a picnic compared to what Liberals would do to the world. Anyone who listens to them is a fool.
“It was calculated if you shoved every landfill in the planet in one place it’d cover the area half the size of Vermont with several meters of (even non-recycled) trash. That’s –zit– compared to the total area of the Earth” Penn and Teller did a show about this. They interveiwed a Rep. From the NYC Dept of Sanitation about recydling. And she said the same thing you heard back in the 70′s. Only this was arounfd 2004 when they aired this show. So it pretty much hasn’t changed. It’s all about controlling the masses nothing more.
They’re also the people who want to ration health care to everyone else, and are in the preliminary stages of implementing a policy of involuntary euthanasia with the porkulus bill. They think that premium health care and an endless stream of wonder drugs will still be available to them even when they make R&D unaffordable for pharmaceutical companies and make the medical profession so financially unrewarding that noone will want to waste the many years it takes to complete medical training. They’re going to be in for a surprise, but it won’t help the rest of us any.
Enviromentalists and socialists. They want rules for everyone else because, in their figuring, they will be exempt by being buddies with the government elite. I am really worried over this new healthcare system, working in the medical field myself. Most of my patients are kids, some bedbound and needing total care. Do we “pull the plug” on them because of poor prognosis, just to save government money? I suppose so. We have people who throw out new babies, and that’s okay now. New drugs won’t be coming out very much, because of the heavy restrictions, cost, and lawyer feeding frenzies. Well, we could end up like the Soviets, and hold guns to their heads. I remember under Clinton’s plan, I would no longer have a choice in my field; they would choose, depending on what they needed, not my training. People are going to be shocked when they have to have medical care under the “hope and change” government. By then, it will be too late. What would you say when your father or mother has a stroke, only to be told that many drugs they could have had, will be denied because of “cost effectiveness”? As their chances for recovery slip away, you can watch your parent breathing oxygen through a cannula, in some medicare nursing home, as the staff debates whether that is worthwhile too, under the new guidelines. But the enviromentalists and the socialists know they will be exempt. Like Brits needing an operation, they will jet to India. I, personally, won’t be part of it. I can’t tell a family that we can’t do treatments for their kid, or their parent, because it isn’t “cost effective”, anymore. I’ll retire.
being a politburo member in good standing, we don’t have to abide by the rules we pass for the peons. algore’s boat, obambi’s 747 trip, algore’s mansion, this clown’s mansion. obambi’s thermostat in the white house.
This is exactly why I respect Begley Jr./Nye. They say they what to live a “green” life and they do it. No huge mansions and carbon credits. They also don’t (or I haven’t heard) them say that we must be forced by government to buy small cars, CFL’s etc. They seem to look at both the pros and cons of all options and pick the best ones.
Leno had someone on last night and they were originally a corn-based ethanol nut. They realized it’s consequences (i.e. food to fuel)and realized it wouldn’t work. They are now looking at other more viable options.
