My restaurant recommendation for the Obamas

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 16, 2009 05:15 PM

Doesn’t President Obama listen to himself? We are living in catastrophic economic times. We must all engage in shared sacrifice. We can’t afford to do business as usual.

Yet, he cranks up the White House thermostat and splurges on Oprah’s chef’s upscale restaurant in Chicago for Valentine’s Day.

Next time, make it Sonic — America’s Drive-In.

Lucky for you, Mr. President, a new one just opened up in Chicago.

It’s cheap. It’s fast. It’s delicious. And the cherry limeades are to die for:

So are the bacon cheeseburgers and the Frito chili cheese wrap.

Real food for real people; which is probably why Pres and First Lady Obama would never touch it.

I question the legitimacy of an upscale restaurant serving southern cuisine. Real southern cooking is best cooked at home, followed by a mom and pop restaurant.

As a side note, one of the things I always admired about the Bushes was how often they stayed home, particularly at holidays, so the Secret Service could be with their families.

I take issue with it. How much did it cost to fly AF1 to Chicago? How much did it cost for his motorcade and two dozen secret service agents> How many people were inconvenienced and missed their dinner reservations when the Obama drove down those streets that were closed for him? How much did it cost to screen the diners and did Table 52 give the SS a list of diners so they could prescreen?

I’ve scaled back my food choices so I can sock a little money away in preparation for the Obama’s economy busting plans and he has the nerve to fly to Chicago with the bitter wifey for a very expensive (counting all the security and flights) meal?

Hell, yes I begrudge him that.

I agree. The menu I found a menu of the restaurant doesn’t have much Southern cooking.

I don’t know how old that menu is, but the only things I saw on it that qualify as Southern are:

    Art’s Buttermilk Fried Chicken

    and

    Art’s Hummingbird Cake

The other items are too gussified up to qualify. I’m sorry, but adding parma ham to skillet cornbread is an automatic disqualification. What ever happened to Virginia ham? Besides, everyone knows you do ham and biscuits and honey on cornbread. :-)

If you want to see a Southern menu here is one.

Nope. Closest I know of is all the way down in Vancouver. :(

Having lived in several western states, and sampled at Whataburger, Sonic and In-N-Out, I have to say they seem to tie for Numero Uno. What? I was just sampling! :)

Whataburger has huge, sloppy, drippy burgers that are pretty tasty and priced right! Sonic has Tots and roller skates! ‘Nuf said. In-N-Out’s 2X2 (or “Double-Double” when ordering) and fresh sliced fries are just the ticket for whenever I get to feeling just a bit too healthy. Perfect amount of salt on the fries and those beef patties!

What the h^&l is arugala anyway?

I just wish there was a Sonic in Honolulu.

I wonder if we can get a subsidy for someone to open one.

Hey, we’re the Home State. Surely Barry O can slap us some cash for a Sonic.

Be careful what you wish for. To many mainland franchises, like IHOP and Arby’s, just aren’t the same here.

Doesn’t anyone make Tater-Tots here in the land of Aloha?

Sonic is out of Oklahoma City. The best thing about Sonic is the cherry Limeade. The worst thing is that although sonic discourges tipping, you feel you have to tip when the girls (yes, they are all girls) deliver your order to your car.

The Ol’ country girl doesn’t like Sonic because of her tipping angst. All my grown kids and grand kids love Sonic. We have two in Claremore. Having lived in the Chicago area a while back, I think Sonic would be an upgrade. I am tired of the gourmet burgers, where the tasters on TV have facial orgasms. They just make good, inexpensive hamburgers.

Never noticed they discouraged tipping. I don’t go there much, mainly cause of the need for tipping.

    Am I tight or what!!

I had wanted to go to Sonic ever since seeing the movie Fandango and hearing the old coot give his famous “Two chili dogs and a chocolate malt” line. Moved here to AZ and there are two…. count ‘em…two here in Kingman. Great burgers, and when it is 110 degrees out the covered parking is REALLY a plus.

ArizonaNeanderthal, the Supersonics are in Oklahoma City, too. They’re now known as the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Last time I was in Seattle there were lots of signs in windows reading “SOS” or “Save Our Sonics.” I was afraid to tell anyone we were from Oklahoma. Also when I was there, someone vandalized a Hummer sitting in front of a guy’s house just because it was a Hummer. I love how tolerant the leftists are.

You haven’t lived until you have lunch or dinner from one of the taco trucks in LA. Incredibly, a leading Democrat city council member led an effort to use the power of the LA City Attorney to shut down the taco trucks. The fish tacos are to die for and I never had a bad meal at a taco truck. Having said that, you can’t go wrong at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles either.
Somehow, I can’t see John Kerry ever ordering from the taco truck. I vaguely recall that Kerry went to Pat’s King of Steaks in South Philly and asked if he could have brie with his steak sandwich and I think he asked the waitress if they served chablis. You can’t invent anything as glorious as John Kerry at Pats.
