Green fact of the day

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 17, 2009 11:12 AM

From reader Matthew R, who e-mails: “Obama will use as much energy in flight to CO as the museum’s solar panels can produce in 4 years.”

Thought you might find this interesting – according to the info I found on Boeing’s website and elsewhere, the 747-200 that operates as Air Force One uses anywhere from 5 to 7 gallons of fuel per mile, depending on how full it is. At roughly 1500 miles from DC to Denver, that’s at least 15,000 gallons of fuel round trip. There are 33.4 kilowatt hours of energy in a gallon of fuel, meaning this trip will use about 500,000 kilowatt hours of energy. According to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s own website, their solar installation has generated only 90,000 kilowatt hours of energy since it was installed last June!

Imagine, all that energy expended for nothing more than a photo-op. What a shameful, duplicitous example for the administration to set for the nation, while at the same time preaching to us to “Go Green” and conserve energy!

But is any of us surprised anymore by the hypocrisy of our “enlightened betters” (Algore, ex-Sen. Edwards, et al) on this issue? At least Ed Begley Jr and Bill Nye, as we read in one of the comments in the MM Blog yesterday (sorry, I don’t remember by whom or on what thread) live the lives they’re advocating: that’s worthy of respect for their honesty.

What’s also curious is the President’s insistence on spending lots and lots of money (and carbon-based energy) to stay out of Washington after he fought so hard to get into his current position.

Not even close. When the president travels, it involves far more than Air Force One. There are actually two identical 747Bs that make every trip, the second as a decoy and backup. In addition, there are at least three military transports that carry the presidential limo, staff vehicles and secret service escort vehicles, and often the presidential helicopters. (also at least two) In some cases, fighter escorts are also provided.

The exact cost is kept secret for security reasons, but conservative estimates are $40,000/hour, just for actual time in the air. Plus Marine One to/from the airports, disruption of commercial air operations, preparation, planning, layovers on the ground, local security and traffic…etc. etc. etc.

So in addition to the massive energy consumption and carbon emmission not-so-green hypocrasy, lets lets talk reality. He’s spending millions to go to Denver to sign a massive deficit spending bill, that will not stimulate anything.

I’m embracing hope & change. God, I hope he changes.

Apparently global warming is a problem. That said, I don’t understand the outrage directed towards President Obama simply because of the cost of a presidential trip. Seems that all presidents travel this way….who knew. If you would like to debate the environmental or energy policies of this or any other administration, I’m fine with that, but the outrage over the presidents plane, car, menu selections is……silly. I don’t recall the outrage here over the Bush administrations orders for expanding gov. fleets with alt. energy/hybrid/plug in vehicles (souped of golf carts to some) in the 2007 EX Order 13423. Or any mention of the cost of the trip to tour a solar plant in Arizona after signing the order. The only time I would whine about the cost of presidential travel is when an incumbent has that cost paid by taxpayers during an election campaign such as the ” visited the factory/grade school then attended the fund raiser trick”. But what can you do.

Keep pounding away at these AGW wealth re-distributors! I’ve found one topic that they absolutely HATE so they never address it and ALWAYS try to change the subject with their ‘climate change’ subterfuge. The topic is the simple relationship between CO2 and plant life. They just cannot get around the established scientific fact that almost any plant you wish to choose THRIVES on having more CO2. For almost a century, greenhouse operators have know that and boost CO2 in their greenhouses to speed up growth of crops from tomatoes to flowers.

Surprisingly, even in Wikipedia, they mention the fact that:

Plants require carbon dioxide to conduct photosynthesis, and greenhouses may enrich their atmospheres with additional CO2 to boost plant growth, since its low present-day atmosphere concentration is just above the “suffocation” level for green plants.

    (emphasis mine)

That’s right folks, the TRUTH is that our atmosphere really is CO2 IMPOVERISHED!

Earth’s atmosphere today contains about 380 ppm CO2 (0.038%). Compared to former geologic times, our present atmosphere, like the Late Carboniferous atmosphere, is CO2- impoverished! In the last 600 million years of Earth’s history only the Carboniferous Period and our present age, the Quaternary Period, have witnessed CO2 levels less than 400 ppm

    .

Plants, many of which first evolved when CO2 was 5X to 15X higher than now, have been hanging on trying to survive with barely enough CO2 to keep them going for the last few thousands of years and here come these self appointed ‘green’ liberals trying to give them … even LESS of what they need!

This is NOT some scientific theory like AGW, it is not based on some lame ‘consensus’ of government paid hacks, it isn’t a lame trend line on some hack’s undisclosed computer model – it is just a FACT. … a fact liberal AGW nut cases would rather not hear anyone talking about because it totally ANNIHILATES their ~argument~ that CO2 is some sort of pollution.

So… KEEP CONFRONTING THEM WITH IT!

It’s pointless trying to have a rational discussion with this clownish pom-pom girl cheerleader for the socialists.

My college physics was more than 35 years ago, but I still understand that the amount of power “an” automobile requires to go 65mph depends, for starters, on the vehicle’s weight(mass) and cargo load, and the grade of the road, not to mention the amount of friction between moving parts, the combustion efficiency of the engine, etc.

But our clown troll – a mathematics teacher, no less (God help his poor students) – just pulls a guess out of his ***, and posts.

That is high; maybe it’s the total energy in gasoline? IC engines produce a lot of heat; the real mechanical output is probably closer to 10 KW-HR per gallon. So that’s about 4 gallons of gasoline needed per hour at 65 MPH. So one tank of 16 gallons gets you about 260 miles. That’s seems to be close to what I experience going cross country in my Crown Vic.

1 kw (1.3 HP) would barely run a small small lawn mower and not even move most cars, unless we start driving what liberals would like us to. A car running at 65 mph would require more like 50kw at constant speed . Now, if we assume we can capture around 50% of that energy from gasoline, in one we hour we have

    1 hr x [50 kw ÷ (33.4 kwh/gal x 0.50)] = 3.0 gallons

    which is quite believable.
